Takeaways from Georgia’s 34-20 win over Florida

Georgia football’s 34-20 win over Florida has several key takeaways.

The No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs (7-1) came fresh off a bye week to play the extremely undermanned Florida Gators (4-4). While Georgia was able to win 34-20, it was a sloppy game that saw Florida holding a 13-6 lead at the half and actually being favored to win, according to ESPN’s win probability.

If it weren’t for Florida’s second-string quarterback DJ Lagway being carted off the field with an injury, the Gators could’ve pulled off a massive upset, but the Bulldogs locked in during the second half, going on a 28-7 run to win the game.

Georgia quarterback Carson Beck threw three interceptions, but salvaged his day with two touchdown passes in the second half. The flaws in Beck’s game are undeniable and it seems like Georgia has won in spite of Beck in recent games. He’ll need to elevate his game, especially if Trevor Etienne misses time with a rib injury.

Fortunately, the defense stepped up. Despite allowing some deep balls, the defense played solidly, arguably even better than the points they allowed. Chaz Chambliss had an amazing game with 2.5 tackles for loss and two sacks. KJ Bolden was a rock at safety, with an 83.3 PFF grade. Overall, the Georgia Bulldogs only allowed 228 total yards.

Overall, Georgia fans are worrie again. Sure, the Bulldogs now reign atop the SEC after their 30-15 win over Texas, but their offense has rarely reached the level they had last year, which has caused them to play down to competition such as Mississippi State, Kentucky, and now Florida.

On Nov. 9, Georgia will be tested against No. 12 Ole Miss (7-2), a team that just put up 63 points against Arkansas, so they’ll have to bring it offensively.

Here are some takeaways from the Florida-Georgia game

Carson Beck has got to be better

This was the second week in a row where Carson Beck had three interceptions. If we look at the bigger picture, Carson Beck has just 10 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in the last five games.

Beck has yet to reach the level of play that most expected out of him this year, and it has made it a lot more difficult for Georgia to win games. Sure, Beck was pressured on the first interception, but he has shown massive flaws in ball placement.

The catalyst for Georgia’s success is their front seven

Through thick and thin, the Georgia Bulldogs have had at least one constant unit: the front seven. Outside of a stretch where Mykel Williams was hurt, and they were just good, the pass rush and linebacker core of Georgia has been elite the whole season. They’ve done well in stopping the run these last three games, with their opponent never averaging more than 3.6 yards per carry in that span. Against Florida, Georgia only allowed 115 rushing yards on 38 carries.

They won the special teams battle

Of course, no one can talk about this game without mentioning Florida’s blatant special team mishap. On a field goal try that would’ve given Florida the lead late in the third quarter, the snapper chucked the ball way over the holder’s head, causing a mad dash for the football, which Georgia recovered. Georgia scored a touchdown on the ensuing drive.

Rece Davis releases college football rankings after Week 10

Rece Davis lowers the Georgia Bulldogs in his college football rankings after the Florida game

ESPN’s “College GameDay” analyst Rece Davis released his top 10 rankings after Week 10 of the college season. Davis has a vote for the Associated Press and agreed with the media consensus for his top team this week. He ranked the Oregon Ducks No. 1.

The Georgia Bulldogs, fresh off an unimpressive 34-20 win over Florida, fell to No. 3 in Davis’ rankings. Georgia is the highest-ranked team from the SEC because of its 30-15 win over Texas, but as time goes on, that benefit of the doubt could fade away.

If Georgia keeps looking suspect against conference noncontenders as it did against Florida, Kentucky and Mississippi State, it could negatively affect its ranking. Next week, UGA will be tested against Ole Miss, which was just outside of the top 10 of Rece Davis’ rankings at No. 14.

Of course, the biggest game last weekend was Ohio State-Penn State in the Big Ten. Undefeated Penn State was looking to beat the Buckeyes for the first time in a several years, but its offense couldn’t break through against Ohio State (as usual). The Nittany Lions even had several chances from inside the 5-yard line to score, but the Buckeyes buckled up, stopping Penn State and winning 20-13

A few new teams join Davis’s rankings.

Undefeated Indiana joins the list at No. 10. It continues to look impressive with the largest point differential in the Big Ten. Notre Dame, meanwhile, may simply be the beneficiary of circumstance. It was on a bye this past weekend. When Clemson and Iowa State were upset, the Fighting Irish sneaked in.

Week 11 will feature some great SEC bouts. Georgia will square off against Ole Miss, but the more consequential one is Alabama going against LSU. These teams have had up-and-down seasons. Alabama was the No. 1 team nationally after beating Georgia before falling on its face against Vanderbilt.

LSU looked like a shoo-in for the College Football Playoff before falling apart against Texas A&M. This will be a desperation matchup: The loser will almost certainly be out of the running for a berth in the SEC championship game.

Winners, losers from Georgia’s win over Florida

Who were Georgia football’s best, worst performers against Florida?

The Georgia Bulldogs did not play their best in a competitive 34-20 win over the Florida Gators. A few Bulldogs make timely plays in the fourth quarter to help Georgia pull away late.

Georgia did enough to win, but showed inconsistency that has defined the 2024 season thus far. The Bulldogs have been dominant for stretches, but rarely for extended periods of time.

Georgia’s up-and-down start to the season still has been enough for the Dawgs to be the No. 2 team in the country and the top team in the SEC standings.

Who are the top winners and losers from Georgia’s win over Florida?

Winner: Georgia tight end Ben Yurosek

Georgia tight end Ben Yurosek, a Stanford transfer, played his best game of the season against Florida. Yurosek had two catches for 39 yards and finished with the most receiving yards of any Georgia tight end.

Loser: Georgia quarterback Carson Beck

Georgia quarterback Carson Beck threw three interceptions in the win over Florida. Beck helped Georgia rack up 455 total yards and 309 passing yards, but his costly mistakes helped keep Florida in the game when the Gators should have been overmatched after being down to their third-string quarterback.

Winner: Georgia defensive end Chaz Chambliss

Georgia defensive end Chaz Chambliss showed great effort as a pass rusher. His refusal to give up helped him finish with six tackles and two sacks against Florida. Chambliss was named as the SEC co-defensive player of the week for his performance.

Loser: Georgia’s running back depth

Corey Perrine/Florida Times-Union

Georgia running back Trevor Etienne has a rib injury and missed much of the action against Florida. His rib issue sounds like a pain tolerance issue. Etienne did not play in the second half against his former team.

Georgia is already without Branson Robinson (knee) and Roderick Robinson (toe).

Winner: Georgia linebacker CJ Allen

Georgia Bulldogs linebacker CJ Allen is having a great sophomore season. Corey Perrine/Florida Times-Union

CJ Allen’s interception effectively ended the game against Florida. Allen recorded eight tackles and now has 41 total tackles this season, which is second-most on the team. Allen looks line the top Dawg in Georgia’s inside linebacker room.

“It was a big play,” said Kirby Smart on Allen’s interception. “I thought the guy was wide open, and they had a nice play called, a little bootleg action.”

Allen’s fourth quarter interception is the first of his career. “CJ Allen made a freaky, unbelievable play to jump up and snag it, and that was probably the biggest change in the game,” added Smart.

Best photos, moments from Georgia football’s 34-20 win over Florida

The Georgia Bulldogs moved to 7-1 with a 34-20 victory over the Florida Gators. Georgia needed a pair of late fourth quarter touchdowns to break a 20-20 tie.

Georgia quarterback Carson Beck threw three more interceptions as Georgia’s turnover concerns continue to mount. Beck finished the day 25 of 40 for 304 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions.

The game turned when Florida quarterback DJ Lagway left the game in the second quarter due to a hamstring injury. The Gators were forced to play their third-string quarterback in Aidan Warner.

Florida’s offense looked nowhere near as threatening with Warner under center. Georgia’s defense held Florida to just 13 total first downs and limited the Gators to converting just three of 16 third downs.

Next up for Georgia is a road trip to No. 12 Ole Miss. Florida, who dropped to 4-4, has to play at No. 5 Texas.

Billy Napier proud after Florida’s 4th straight loss to Georgia

“Proud of our team,” said Florida Gators head coach Billy Napier after the Gators’ fourth straight loss to Georgia

Florida Gators head coach Billy Napier remains optimistic despite the Gators’ recent 34-20 loss to the Georgia Bulldogs. Florida played a more competitive than expected game against Georgia, but the Gators failed to generate much offense after starting quarterback DJ Lagway left the game with a hamstring injury.

“I’m extremely proud of our team,” said Napier “I think throughout this entire year the character of this group has showed up. I think it’s a tough group and I do think that I’m proud of the way think executed in the game today, the effort in which they played, and the pride in which they took in representing Florida and competing.”

After the loss, Florida fell to 4-4 and 2-3 in the SEC games. The Gators face an uphill battle to bowl eligibility. Florida has three consecutive games against ranked opponents after their loss to Georgia. The Gators will have to do it while starting their third-string quarterback.

“Well, first of all, hats off to Aidan Warner,” said Napier on his third-string quarterback. “We’re talking about a guy who didn’t go through spring practice. Really did a lot of two-spot work in training camp. Won the backup job or won the three job at some point in training camp. Then two weeks ago started taking real reps with the second unit.”

Florida struggled to convert third downs against Georgia and went just three of 16. The Gators had a ton of three and outs.

“I thought third down was a challenge today,” said Napier. “But, yeah, just overall the effort, the physicality, fundamentals at the point of attack, I thought we were in position (to win) for sure.”

Georgia and Florida were tied at 20 in the fourth quarter before UGA pulled away with two late touchdowns. Florida’s defense forced three Carson Beck interceptions, which helped keep the Gators in the game.

“It was exactly the way we wanted it to go,” said Napier on Florida’s defensive performance. “We affected the quarterback. We made it sloppy. Made it ugly. We limited the explosive plays. Made them go the distance. Were able to get some takeaways. We obviously need to capitalize on some of those short fields, but hats off to our defensive staff.”

With the loss, Napier moves to 0-3 in his career against Kirby Smart. Napier is certainly on the hot seat and needs to make a bowl game to boost his chances of returning in 2025.

“He’s (Aidan Warner) done a great job since he start taking reps a couple weeks ago,” said Napier. “For him to do what he did today, you know, I think there is something to be said for that. Look, he’ll continue to get better. You know, think about it now, just a few weeks ago that guy is, you know, standing around eating ice cream.”

I’ve never heard a coach describe a player as ‘standing around eating ice cream’, so that’s an interesting expression to use. It is unfair to Warner to assume he would be ready to play against an elite Georgia defense.

Moving on, Napier likes how his defense has improved this season.

“Embarrassed with how they played in the beginning of the year. I think the open date was huge and I think since then the product continues to get a little better each week,” said Napier on Florida’s defense.

There’s no doubt Florida has improved, but will it be too little, too late for Napier?

Georgia football relieved after 4th straight win over Florida

Georgia football fans have a lot on their minds after picking up a 34-20 win over Florida

(This story was updated because an earlier version included an inaccurate headline.)

The Georgia Bulldogs prevailed over the Florida Gators for a fourth straight time. Georgia Bulldogs needed a pair of late fourth-quarter touchdowns for the 34-20 victory after Florida tied the game at 20.

Florida was down to its third-string quarterback after quarterback DJ Lagway left the game in the second quarter due to a hamstring injury.

Georgia quarterback Carson Beck and the Bulldogs failed to capitalize. Beck threw three interceptions before orchestrating a long drive to put Georgia up 27-20. Beck finished 25 of 40 for 304 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions. He will have to play better if Georgia wants to beat Ole Miss next week.

Georgia fans and media react to the Dawgs’ win over Florida

“Georgia rallies for a 34-20 win, but games like this will not get the Bulldogs where they hope to go,” said Georgia football media member Anthony Dasher.

“Georgia is 7-1 and have played some of the most awful half’s of football on offense since Kirby’s first season in Athens. But the Bulldogs are still have all goals ahead of them,” said UGASports.com’s Trent Smallwood.

“It was an ugly day for the Georgia offense, but the Bulldogs put together a 75-yard touchdown drive late and CJ Allen seals the deal with a pick that set the stage for another score,” said Jordan Hill of 247Sports.

“No matter what happens, I’m going to keep coming, but I know I need to get better,” said Carson Beck after the game. Beck has show resiliency, but has been fortunate that Georgia’s defense played well enough to win against both Florida and Texas.

Our favorite annual tradition in the rivalry has to be Florida fans heading home to beat the traffic.

Georgia football wins in shaky performance vs Florida

Georgia overcomes three Carson Beck turnovers to beat Florida for a fourth time in a row

The Georgia Bulldogs needed a pair of late fourth quarter touchdowns in order to beat the Florida Gators 34-20.

Georgia quarterback Carson Beck is the story of the game as he threw three more interceptions in game where he needed to limit turnovers. Georgia moves to 7-1 and 5-1 in SEC play. Florida drops to 4-4 and 2-3 in conference games.

Florida quarterback DJ Lagway left the game in the second quarter due to a hamstring injury. The Gators, who were already without their top quarterback Graham Mertz, were forced to turn to their third-string quarterback in Aidan Warner.

Florida’s offense looked nowhere near as threatening with Lagway out, but they managed to make things interesting thanks to a late first half field goal drive and a touchdown to tie the game at 20 in the fourth quarter.

Georgia’s defense held Florida to just 13 total first downs. The Gators converted only three of 16 third downs. The game’s momentum changed after Florida had a bad snap on a field goal attempt, which allowed Georgia to cash in for a touchdown.

Georgia’s performance was a little bit concerning for Bulldog fans. UGA should have dominated Florida with Lagway injured, but Carson Beck helped keep the Gators in the game with a few costly mistakes.

Beck bounced back in the second half and put up some decent stats. He finished the day 25 of 40 for 304 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions. Most of his interceptions were forced into double coverage.

Jersey matchup set for Georgia vs Florida game

Should the Georgia Bulldogs always wear red and Florida always wear blue when the two teams play?

The Georgia Bulldogs will wear their iconic red jerseys and silver britches against the Florida Gators. Georgia will wear its usual red helmet.

Florida will wear white jerseys, blue pants, and orange helmets against Georgia.

Georgia will be the home team against Florida at EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville, Florida. As usual, the stadium will be split 50-50 down the middle with Georgia and Florida fans.

Georgia serving as the home team means the Bulldogs will wear red, but it also has SEC schedule implications. Georgia has four road SEC games this season, three SEC home games and the Georgia-Florida game, so it makes Georgia’s schedule a little bit more challenging.

Georgia last wore red jerseys against Florida in 2022. Last season, Georgia wore white jerseys, red helmets and silver britches while Florida wore blue jerseys, white pants and ugly orange helmets (orange is always ugly).

Georgia football equipment’s official Instagram announced the jerseys UGA will wear for the Florida game.

Georgia plays Florida at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2. The Georgia-Florida game will be televised on ABC.

Three Georgia players suspended vs. Florida

Former Florida coach Steve Spurrier would be having a field day with three Georgia Bulldogs suspended against the Gators

Three Georgia Bulldogs players are suspended for at least part of the Florida Gators game.

Georgia defensive back Joenel Aguero is suspended for the first half of the Florida game after getting a targeting penalty in the second half of Georgia’s win over Texas. Georgia had a bye week after the Texas game and targeting penalties in the second half of a game automatically require a suspension for the first half of the next game.

Aguero was not the only Dawg to get a targeting penalty in the second half against Texas. Safety Dan Jackson also was assessed a targeting penalty versus Texas and will miss the first half against Florida due to the automatic suspension. In the secondary, Georgia will ask KJ Bolden and JaCorey Thomas to play more snaps in the first half.

“I’m not really worried about it. It is what it is right now,” Georgia coach Kirby Smart said about Aguero and Jackson being suspended for the first half.  “Our guys are trying to get ready for Florida, and we’re going to prepare to play Florida.”

[lawrence-auto-related count=2]

Georgia is also without wide receiver Colbie Young, who is suspended indefinitely after he was arrested a few days before the Mississippi State game. Georgia is also without wide receiver Anthony Evans, who suffered an injury ahead of the Florida game.

Key Georgia WR ruled out vs Florida

Georgia’s top punt returner is out against Florida. The Bulldogs are down two wide receivers against the Gators.

The Georgia Bulldogs will be down another wide receiver against the Florida Gators.

Sophomore wide receiver Anthony Evans is out for the Florida game after a recent update to the SEC football injury report. It is unclear what Evans’ injury is. Evans is Georgia’s top kickoff and punt returner.

The 5-foot-11, 170-pound receiver has nine receptions for 88 yards this season. Evans also has one run for 52 yards, six kickoff returns for 105 yards and 14 punt returns for 118 yards. Georgia will miss Evans’ versatility.

No other Bulldog has returned a punt or kickoff this season, so it is unclear who will step in for Evans. Georgia may turn to Dillon Bell on kickoffs. Joenel Aguero returned one punt in 2023, so he could be Georgia’s top punt returning option in 2024 with Evans out. Sacovie White is another name to watch at punt returner.

Georgia is already without wide receiver Colbie Young, who is suspended indefinitely.
