Former Georgia WR scores NFL’s second touchdown of preseason

Former Georgia Bulldogs standout wide receiver Tyler Simmons signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers after Georgia’s pro day.

Former Georgia Bulldogs standout wide receiver Tyler Simmons scored the NFL’s second touchdown of the preseason. Simmons’ score gave the Pittsburgh Steelers a 15-3 lead over the Dallas Cowboys.

Tyler Simmons earned another NFL opportunity this offseason following Georgia’s pro day. Simmons is competing for an NFL roster spot with the Pittsburgh Steelers this NFL season. His preseason touchdown will certainly help his cause.

Simmons, who had a brief stint last year on the Houston Texans’ practice squad, benefited from Georgia’s pro day. Kirby Smart invited a few former Georgia Bulldogs to compete in the event and boost their exposure in front of NFL scouts.

The list of those attending UGA’s pro day included Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin. Following Georgia’s pro day, Pittsburgh general manager Kevin Colbert offered Simmons a chance to compete for a roster spot in 2021.

Simmons is effective as a wide receiver or as a special teams player, and he can carry the ball occasionally. Simmons’ versatile skills and athletic profile helped him turn some heads at Georgia’s pro day and ultimately get another opportunity in the NFL.

Smart did the right thing to invite Simmons and David Marshall to Georgia’s pro day. Simmons will have to work to make the Steelers’ opening day roster, but he could turn his time with Pittsburgh into another offer elsewhere.

Former Georgia Bulldog DL signs with New England Patriots

Former Georgia Bulldogs defensive lineman Michael Barnett has found a new NFL home with the New England Patriots.

Former Georgia Bulldogs defensive lineman Michael Barnett has found a new NFL home. Michael Barnett has signed with the New England Patriots ahead of the 2020 NFL season.

Barnett was a key fixture for the Bulldogs top ranked run defense last season. He’s not much of a pass rusher (zero career sacks at UGA). Barnett recorded 47 total tackles in his career at Georgia including 23 during the 2019 season.

This is an excellent opportunity for Barnett, who went undrafted in the 2020 NFL Draft. Bill Belichick is notorious for giving undrafted players a fair shot to compete.

Barnett will try to help bolster New England’s run defense. He’ll face an uphill battle trying to make the Patriot roster without any preseason games. If Barnett doesn’t make their roster, he could end on on their practice squad or find a landing spot elsewhere in the league.

Best of luck to Barnett, who is from Ridgeville, South Carolina.

Los Angeles Chargers releasing former Carolina Panther Thomas Davis

The Los Angeles Chargers are releasing former Carolina Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis. Davis went to the University of Georgia.

The Los Angeles Chargers are releasing former Carolina Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis. The Panthers originally drafted Davis in the first round out of the University of Georgia.

Davis spent the first thirteen seasons of his NFL career in Carolina before the Panthers moved on from him last off-season. Davis was successful in his one year in Los Angeles en route to recording 112 total tackles.

However, Davis’s solid season wasn’t enough to vault Los Angeles into the NFL postseason. Now the Chargers, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, have released him:

In addition to the release of outside linebacker Thomas Davis, the Chargers are also moving on from defensive tackle Brandon MeBane. Davis, who is set to be 37 later this month, will weigh retiring or coming back for another season.

Every Georgia Bulldog playing on in the NFL’s Wildcard round

Georgia Bulldogs will look to leave their stamp on the NFL’s postseason once again. Last season, UGA’s Sony Michel dominated the playoffs.

Georgia Bulldogs will look to leave their stamp on the NFL’s postseason once again. Last season, UGA’s Sony Michel dominated the playoffs en route to a Super Bowl title. Who will be UGA player will help lead their team to a championship?

This year, there’s no Georgia Bulldog currently on a roster in the NFC. It’s quite surprising considering the number of Bulldogs in the NFL. That means no UGA players will suit up in Sunday’s Vikings at Saints contest or the Seahawks at Eagles game.

The AFC, however, is another story. On Saturday, Isaiah McKenzie will hope to help the Bills knock off the Houston Texans. McKenzie had 254 receiving yards on the season and is capable of shifting the dynamic of a game with one explosive play. The Texans don’t have any UGA players on their roster.

The Chiefs, who have a bye, feature rookie receiver Mecole Hardman heavily on special teams and pepper him into their passing game as well. Hardman is an explosive play waiting to happen. The Baltimore Ravens lack Georgia Bulldogs on their roster as well.

Saturday Night, Bulldog fans will be able to watch RB Sony Michel and the Patriots take on Ben Jones and the Tennessee Titans. Michel is undefeated in the playoffs in his young career. Fellow Bulldogs TE Ben Watson (173 receiving yards in 2019) and tackle Isaiah Wynn will accompany Michel. Center Ben Jones commanded a dominant Titan offensive line this year. Tennessee’s Derrick Henry led the NFL in rushing on the season.
