Seahawks QB Geno Smith leads the NFL in passing yards

Seahawks QB Geno Smith leads the NFL in passing yards

The Seattle Seahawks have one of the best statistical quarterbacks this season. Through the first month of the season, Geno Smith leads the entire NFL in passing yards with 1,182 yards through the air.

Smith has been absolutely flourishing in offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb’s system, as he has played nothing short of sublime football. Smith was able to claim the top spot in this statistical category after his stellar performance on Monday Night Football. Against the Detroit Lions, Smith set a career-best with 395 yards passing with 38 completions.

But MNF has not been the only examples of Smith’s greatness thus far. In Week 2 against the New England Patriots, Smith had 327 yards, and followed it up in Week 3 with another 289 at home versus Miami. The only time this year Smith has been held under 200 yards passing was in Week 1 with only 172.

Geno Smith does not get the respect he is due in the national conversation. Perhaps it is still folks who are holding his days with the New York Jets against him. Or maybe because the Seahawks are tucked away in the Pacific Northwest and fans outside of the west coast simply do not pay much attention. Whatever it may be, the 12th Man is tired of their quarterback being overlooked.

If Smith is able to keep up this incredibly high level of play, the two-time Pro Bowler might not be overlooked for much longer.

Despite the loss, Seahawks should feel optimistic moving forward

Despite the loss, Seahawks should feel optimistic moving forward

The Seattle Seahawks may no longer be undefeated, but they put up a valliant effort on Monday Night Football with an incredibly shorthanded defense. Seattle was without five starters (Byron Murphy II, Leonard Williams, Uchenna Nwosu, Boye Mafe and Jerome Baker) going into the game, and lost their Pro Bowl safety Julian Love during it. Against a team as well coached and talented like the Detroit Lions, that simply does not bode well for any organization.

Detroit is good. Really good. This is a team coming off a playoff run to the NFC Championship game where they were two quarters away from playing in their first Super Bowl. And on a night when their offense was essentially perfect, they were in an outright dogfight with Seattle to defend home turf.

Still, despite the injuries, Seattle stayed with it. Despite a 21-7 halftime deficit, the Seahawks battled back, powered by their dynamic offense. Seattle racked up 516 total yards and scored touchdowns on three-consecutive drives to begin the second half. Unfortunately, it was not enough. Yet, it was more than encouraging to see what this unit could be capable of doing!

Through the first three games, Seattle’s offense has had moments of excellence but also plenty of inconsistency and self-inflicted wounds. To see them firing on all cylinders should give every 12th Man, Woman and Child posititive vibes moving forward.

Keep in mind, by the nature of how this game was going, the Seahawks couldn’t really commit to the run… and Kenneth Walker III still had 80 yards and three touchdowns. If this defense is able to get some of those six starters back, as well as keep the offense humming at a more consistent rate, this team is going to remain a difficult out for opponents this year.

Jared Goff goes 18-for-18 passing as Lions topple Seahawks

Jared Goff didn’t throw an incompletion as the Lions downed the Seahawks

Jared Goff threw 18 passes on Monday Night Football against the Seattle Seahawks. The Detroit Lions’ quarterback complete each of them in a 42-29 victory.

Goff threw for 292 yards and two touchdowns. He also caught a touchdown pass from Amon-Ra St. Brown.

The 18-for-18 isn’t an NFL record because it requires 20 attempts to qualify for that mark.

Geno Smith of Seattle had a phenomenal game. He was 38-of-56 for 395 yards with a TD pass and a pick.

Seattle had 516 yards of total offense. Detroit piled 389 yards. Each team had 11 drives in the wild contest.

Seattle had beaten Detroit six straight times coming into the game.

Both teams are 3-1.

Kenneth Walker III had 80 yards rushing and three TDs on the ground for Seattle. He added 36 receiving yards.

For Detroit, St. Brown made six catches for 45 yards and a TD reception in addition to the TD toss to Goff.

The only other NFL game to finish with a 42-29 score happened in 2005 when the Cincinnati Bengals beat the Baltimore Ravens.

Seahawks undefeated no more, fall to Lions 42-29 on MNF

Seahawks undefeated no more, fall to Lions 42-29 on MNF

The Seattle Seahawks are no longer among the ranks of the undefeated in the NFL, as they fall 42-29 to the Detroit Lions on Monday Night Football. It is the first loss in Detroit (and to the Lions overall) since the 2012 season. Seattle falls to 3-1 on the year, but remains atop the NFC West in first place going into Week 5.

The Seahawks defense were without six starters, and boy howdy, did they play like it. Leonard Williams, Byron Murphy II, Uchenna Nwosu, Boye Mafe and Jerome Baker were all ruled OUT before a snap was even taken, and Pro Bowl safety Julian Love left during the game with a thigh injury. The result was a Detroit Lions team having their absolute way with the Seahawks all night long.

Detroit took a 21-7 lead into the half, and maintained at least the two-score lead for most of the game. Anytime Seattle pulled close with a touchdown of their own, the Lions were quick to respond. Here’s what I’m talking about:

  • Seahawks score on opening drive of the third quarter to make it 21-14, Lions march 70 yards in five plays to make it 28-14.
  • Seahawks answer with an 80-yard touchdown drive to make it 28-20 (failed two-point attempt) and the Lions score on a 75-yard touchdown in one play to make it 35-20.
  • Seahawks make it 35-27, and after punts from both teams, Lions turn it into 42-27 with under six minutes to play.

Sadly, the fumble from DK Metcalf in the first half truly loomed large, as it gave Detroit their initial 14-0 lead. The Lions did not take their foot off the gas, keeping the Seahawks at a healthy distance on the scoreboard.

Detroit quarterback Jared Goff was quite literally perfect on the night, completing 18-of-18 passes for 292 yards and two touchdowns, as well as a receiving touchdown on a trick play. Seattle’s inability to slow Goff and the Lions down even a little wasted a sublime performance from the Seahawks offense.

Geno Smith and Kenneth Walker III were nothing short of elite on Monday. Smith threw for 395 yards, while Walker III found the end zone as many times as there are numbers in his name. Having Walker III back in the lineup makes this Seahawks offense as lethal as ever, rushing for 80 yards and three scores.

Smith and Co. gave it their best effort, and actually managed to outgain Detroit 516 to 398, but they simply could not keep pace with a Detroit team facing next to no resistance. A late safety and gave the Seahawks one final chance, which ended in an interception from a Smith desperation heave to the end zone. It is a rotten shame Seattle could not find a way to win with their offense playing at such a high level, easily their best performance of the year so far.

What’s next for the Seahawks? They will return to the Pacific Northwest for a Week 5 game against the flailing New York Giants, who will present a favorable matchup for Seattle to get back in the win column. Hopefully they will get considerably healthier next Sunday, otherwise quarterback Daniel Jones is actually going to look like a player worthy of the massive extension he received last year.

Week 4 preview and prediction: Seahawks @ Lions

Week 4 preview and prediction: Seahawks @ Lions

The Seattle Seahawks are seeking their third 4-0 start in franchise history, and their first since the 2020 season. Standing in their way is a quality Detroit Lions team, hungry to end their current six-game losing skid to the Seahawks.

Since defeating Seattle 28-24 in the 2012 season, the Lions have struggled mightily against the Seahawks, especially at home, where they have lost the last two-straight games in each of the last two seasons. In both instances, Seattle outlasted Detroit in wild 48-45 and 37-31 (OT) shootouts. Offensive fireworks have defined the recent series, but on Monday, injuries seem to be taking the center stage.

For the Lions, they will be without their All-Pro center Frank Ragnow, which is a considerable loss to their offensive line. Unfortunately, the Seahawks may not be as able to take advantage as they would have even a week ago. Seattle has already ruled out defensive tackles Leonard Williams and Byron Murphy II, as well as pass rushers Boye Mafe and Uchenna Nwosu. The Seahawks defense, particularly the pass rush, has been outright suffocating. Without some of the best players on their defensive front, Jared Goff and Co. may have more time than what quarterbacks this season who have played Seattle have enjoyed.

So the Lions offensive line is weakened, and the Seahawks defensive line is as well. It appears to be a battle between a movable object and a stoppable force. But in today’s NFL, take the side of a weaker offense vs. a weakened defense. Seattle has also shown vulnerabilities against the run, which has plagued this unit for years.

To win this game, the load is likely going to have to be shouldered by the offense. Fortunately for the Seahawks, this unit is getting Kenneth Walker III back into the fold after missing the two previous weeks. Having Walker be the primary ballcarrier, with Zach Charbonnet being able to come off the bench for a change of pace, will help give Seattle’s ground attack more teeth to threaten the Lions.

Geno Smith is also more than capable of performing against Detroit. In the last two games against the Lions, Smith has thrown for 648 yards and four touchdowns, as well as leading the game-winning drive in overtime last year. Smith’s statistics haven’t popped off the page in 2024, but he has been playing exceptionally well. Smith also has the most game-winning drives in the entire NFL since the 2022 season.

The Lions are healthier, more experienced, and more established with this current regime. They are coming off a year where they were two quarters of football away from reaching the Super Bowl. But I can’t help but lean towards the Seahawks in this one. Perhaps it is me leaning on recent history. Perhaps it is an intuition. Or perhaps it is the fact Monday night is Seattle’s night. The Seahawks own the best win percentage (.714) in NFL history on Monday nights, and have gone 3-0 in their last three outings on MNF… including a Week 4 road showdown last year.

Give me the Seahawks in another shootout, with more heroics from Smith late.

Prediction: Seahawks over Lions 38-35

3 Bold Predictions for Seahawks QB Geno Smith vs. Lions

3 Bold Predictions for Seahawks QB Geno Smith vs. Lions

Seattle Seahawks starting quarterback Geno Smith off to a phenomenal start in 2024 under the guidance of first-year offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb. Smith completed 26 of 34 passing attempts for 289 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions in last Sunday’s dominant Week 3 victory over the Miami Dolphins.

We’ve compiled three bold predictions for Smith against a difficult Detroit Lions defense on Monday.

Smith throws for 300+ yards

Smith threw for 327 yards in a Week 2 overtime victory over the New England Patriots. The former West Virginia standout nearly surpassed 300 yards against the Dolphins for a second consecutive week (289). The Lions are allowing a 12th-worst 216.7 passing yards per contest.

Smith throws 2+ TDs

Despite placing below league-average in passing yards, the Lions have only allowed three touchdowns through the air. Monday’s primetime contest could be a shootout, however. With Lions defensive back Brian Branch doubtful, Smith could throw a pair of touchdowns to the likes of DK Metcalf and Noah Fant.

Geno Smith plays a turnover-free game

Smith has thrown three interceptions this season, including a season-high two versus the Dolphins, but tcontext is important. Two of his interceptions were largely due to pressure from a collapsing pocket, and the other was tipped at the line of scrimmage. Smith has been accurate while attempting just one turnover-worthy pass, according to Pro Football Focus.

Will Seahawks QB Geno Smith keep his hot streak at Ford Field alive?

Will Seahawks QB Geno Smith keep his hot streak at Ford Field alive?

Seattle Seahawks starting quarterback Geno Smith is off to an outstanding start in 2024. Smith currently ranks fourth in the entire league in passing yards (and the two top spots are occupied by Daniel Jones and Dak Prescott, who played on Thursday). He also ranks third in completion percentage (74.8%).

And historically speaking, Smith has been outstanding versus the Detroit Lions at Ford Field, the site of Seattle’s upcoming Week 4 opponent on Monday Night Football. Last season, Smith led the Seahawks to a thrilling 37-31 Week 2 overtime road victory over the Lions by completing 32-of-41 passes for 328 yards and two touchdowns.

In 2022, Smith’s first season as Seattle’s unquestioned starter, the Seahawks won another thriller in Detroit, outlasting the Lions 48-45 in Week 4. Smith completed 23-of-30 passing attempts for 320 yards and two touchdowns. As ESPN’s Brady Henderson noted, those performances rank second- and third-best in terms of QBR since he became Seattle’s starting signal caller.

Henderson asked Smith about his comfort level at Ford Field.

“Winning there against a really good team, I thought it was obviously great for our season,” Smith said, reminiscing on those recent road victories over the Lions. “It’s a new season this year. They’re [Lions defense] doing some new things. We have to play Monday’s game. Those other games don’t matter. It’s just about this one. I’m looking forward to a tremendous opportunity,” Smith said, tempering expectations.

Smith also discussed handling the crowd noise at Ford Field.

“It gets pretty loud,” Smith added. “We handled those situations pretty well [in the past]. I think we’ll be ready for it. There’s something about those environments that just charge you up.”

https://twitter.com/BradyHenderson/status/1839420657656090737

Smith answered the questions with class and grace. He gave credit to the Lions defense and environment, and mentioned a new campaign means new opportunities. But there’s no denying Smith has historically enjoyed big-time performances at Ford Field.

Seahawks QB Geno Smith is No. 3 in the NFL for passing yards this year

Seahawks QB Geno Smith is No. 3 in the NFL for passing yards this year

The Seattle Seahawks have come out of the gate hot by building a 3-0 record and claiming first place in the NFC West. They have done so despite not playing consistent, or even quality, offense for large stretches of these three games. However, the one bright spot in all three has been quarterback Geno Smith, who is helping carry this unit.

Smith is not just passing the eye test, his success is also being reflected in the box score. Right now, Smith has thrown for the third-most passing yards in the entire NFL this season. He trails only Dak Prescott of the Cowboys and Brock Purdy of the 49ers, and even then he is only 64 and 55 yards, respectively, behind those two signal callers.

Against the Miami Dolphins, Smith had 289 yards through the air. This, of course, following Week 2 in New England where he torched the Pats for 327 yards passing. Smith has another opportunity for yardage in Week 4 when he faces a Detroit Lions team he has had incredible success against in recent memory. The last two times he’s faced Detroit, Smith has a combined 648 yards and four touchdown passes.

Not to mention the health of running back Kenneth Walker and the inconsistency of Zach Charbonnet is likely going to contribute to Seattle having another pass-heavy attack when they face the Lions. Charbonnet did have 91 yards on Sunday, suggesting he can improve, but Smith is still very much the key factor in this offense.

In both years Geno Smith has been the starting quarterback in Seattle, he has qualified for the Pro Bowl. With how he is playing right now, a third-straight appearance is hardly out of the question for the 2022 Comeback Player of the Year.

Seahawks suffocate the Dolphins 24-3, improve to 3-0

Seahawks suffocate the Dolphins 24-3, improve to 3-0

For only the eighth time in franchise history – and first since 2020 – the Seattle Seahawks have started the season 3-0 by defeating the Miami Dolphins 24-3 at Lumen Field. It was a rather sloppy, penalty-filled affair from both teams, but in the end the Seahawks took care of business against a team missing their top two quarterbacks.

Seattle erupted to 17 points in the first quarter, scoring on three of their first four possessions. But after that, the gunpowder for fireworks clearly ran out. Their next six possessions went as follows:

  • Missed field goal
  • Punt
  • Punt
  • Punt
  • Punt
  • Punt
  • Interception

The Seahawks did manage to finally break through and ice the game at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Seattle, backed up at their own two-yard line (more on how they got there, shortly), engineered a 98-yard drive on 11 plays which was capped off by a 10-yard scamper from running back Zach Charbonnet. It was not a sharp performance from the Seahawks, but their offense did more than enough to take advantage of the steller day from the defense.

Why were the Seahawks in need of having to go 98 yards? Because the defense had stopped Miami on 4th down at the two-yard line. In fact, it was the second time Seattle prevented the Dolphins from doing anything in the red zone. Macdonald’s defense suffocated the life from a severely depleted Miami team. Backup Skylar Thompson was knocked out of the game, forcing emergency third stringer Tim Boyle to step into action. Predictably, he did not make much of an impact.

The Dolphins had 12 possessions. Of those 12, six ended in punts, three were turnover on downs, a missed field goal, a made field goal thanks to an interception setting them up in the Seahawks red zone, and a sack to end the first half. Miami was 1-for-12 on third down, and had a whopping 205 total yards on 56 plays.

Seattle maintains their perch atop the NFC West with their 3-0 record, but will face their biggest test of the season in Week 4. The Seahawks will head back to Detroit for the third-consecutive season to play the Lions, who will await them on Monday Night Football.

First half highlights: Seahawks lead Dolphins 17-3

First half highlights: Seahawks lead Dolphins 17-3

The Seattle Seahawks have started the game red-hot against the Miami Dolphins. Seattle is seeking their first 3-0 start since 2020 and so far they are playing like they truly want it.

The Seahawks started the game off with a 56-yard field goal on their opening drive to take an early 3-0 lead. Miami attempted a 57-yarder themselves to respond, but the kick sailed wide left. Seattle managed to find the end zone on their ensuing possession, set up lovely by DK Metcalf’s remarkable reception on second down.

One play later, Charbonnet found paydirt for the second time in as many weeks.

Unfortunately, Seattle’s third drive of the game ended in near-disaster. Backed up in the shadow of the north end zone, Geno Smith was nearly sacked on 3rd-and-15. Instead, he tossed an ill-advised ball towards Charbonnet, which was far too high and landed in the waiting arms of Dolphins defensive back Kader Kohou.

Once more, the Seahawks defense was placed in a brutal spot on the field to defend. They were put in their own red zone twice in Week 1 against the Broncos, and they found themselves there again. Fortunately, Seattle’s defense did what they excel at this season and held Miami to only a field goal.

Geno Smith found instant redemption on his very next throw in the final five seconds of the first quarter.

Metcalf’s 71-yard touchdown was the third longest in his career, and the seventh time he’s had a 50+ yard score.

Seattle’s pass rush came to play in the first half, sacking Skylar Thompson four times, including the first sack of the season from Derick Hall. Boye Mafe also had his third sack of the season, his third in as many games. Last season, he set a franchise record for a sack in seven-straight games.

The second quarter did get a bit sloppier for Seattle. Their three drives before halftime resulted in a missed field goal, two punts and a bevy of penalties caused by the offensive line. However, thanks to the defense, their lead was never in jeopardy. The Seahawks forced Miami to punt the ball on three-straight drives in the second quarter, and then another devastating sack from Derick Hall to conclude the half.

The Dolphins will get the ball to start the second half.
