3 Position Groups Seahawks have advantage over Broncos at

It’s officially game week! The Seattle Seahawks are preparing to begin their 2024 regular-season campaign with a Week 1 matchup versus the Denver Broncos at Lumen Field on Sunday afternoon. It qualifies as a favorable matchup for the new-look Seahawks against a rebuilding Denver team.

We’ve identified three position groups in particular where the Seahawks hold an advantage over their Week 1 opponent.

Quarterback

Geno Smith returns for his third season as Seattle’s starting quarterback. He’s now playing under offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb, who’s expected to provide Smith with more opportunities to make splash plays in the passing game than previous OC Shane Waldron did. Seattle’s starter has thrown for 50 touchdowns across the previous two seasons, giving head coach Mike Macdonald an experience advantage at quarterback over the Broncos and their rookie signal caller Bo Nix.

Wide Receiver

The Seahawks are extremely deep at wide receiver with the three-headed monster of DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Metcalf is a top 20 wideout in the league, Lockett is a reliable veteran, and Smith-Njigba is an ascending sophomore who should be more developed in Year Two. The Broncos’ receiving core took a hit when they traded Jerry Jeudy earlier this offseason. Courtland Sutton is the lone experienced playmaker, with second-year player Marvin Mims Jr. stepping into a larger role.

Cornerback

The Broncos have the best cornerback between these two rosters in Pat Surtain II, but depth gives Seattle the advantage. Riq Woolen and Tre Brown will be the boundary starters with Devon Witherspoon playing the slot and other versatile roles as needed. Seattle’s secondary should give Nix fits in his first career start.

Seattle Seahawks QB Geno Smith will enter his 3rd consecutive season as the starter with a new coaching staff and offensive system. After playing at an MVP level for the 1st half of the 2022 season, he has settled down to be a steady, solid starter. Although his 2023 stats were not super impressive, he was a Pro Bowl last season for the 2nd straight season. Below, we look at Geno Smith’s 2024 fantasy football average draft position (ADP) and where you should draft him.

Entering 2024, he hopes to prove he is more than a bridge to a young franchise QB.

Smith has an ADP of 135.86, which puts him around the 12th to 14th round, depending on the size of the league.

He is 28th among QB, just ahead of Sam Darnold (Minnesota Vikings, 137.22) and Deshaun Watson (Cleveland Browns, 138.25), Derek Carr (New Orleans Saints, 141.81) and Daniel Jones (New York Giants, 142.41).

He is 172nd among all offensive players.

Where should you draft Smith?

Smith should not be your QB1. Yes, he has some upside based on the new system, and he has a talented receiving corps that includes DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett and Jaxon Smith-Njigba.

He is a great caretaker for an offense, makes smart decisions and can lead a team to wins. However, that makes him a solid NFL starter.

That will not win fantasy leagues. He is mobile, but has only scored 1 rushing TD in each of the last 3 seasons. He does a good job of not turning the ball over, but there are so many other options out there with a higher ceiling for passing TDs.

He can be a steady QB2 for your fantasy team. Pick him up in the final rounds or wait to see if he lands on the waiver wire.

Geno Smith’s cousin, Jeremiah, shines in Ohio State debut

Geno Smith’s cousin, Jeremiah, shines in Ohio State debut

We may be one week out from the return of the NFL, but there was plenty of college action this weekend to keep football fans satiated. For Week 1 in college football, there are plenty of ugly blowouts as the most powerful teams in the country often schedule their opening games against considerably weaker opponents. Such was the case for the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Ohio State, coming off an 11-2 season which ended with an ugly 14-3 loss to Missouri in the Cotton Bowl, began their quest to return to the College Football Playoffs against the in-state Akron Zips. Predictably, Akron was no match for the Buckeyes, who dominated the Zips in a 52-6 blowout. But there was one player who truly shined for Ohio State, and his name should be familiar to the 12’s.

True freshman Jeremiah Smith, only 18 years old, made it a long afternoon for Akron’s defensive backs. In his debut, he led the team with six receptions for 92 yards and two touchdowns. Why should his name be familiar? Well, aside from the common last name of ‘Smith,’ he is the cousin of Seattle Seahawks starting quarterback Geno Smith!

Turns out playing football at a high level runs in the Smith family.

Unfortunately, being a true freshman, we are going to have to wait at least three years until he can join his older cousin in the NFL. Hopefully, Geno Smith will still be in the league by then!

If there’s one thing that’s incredible about Seattle sports, it is the fact all the teams and their athletes always seem to support one another. There is no shortage of cross-city love and support from among Seattle’s professional players.

In the latest example, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith was spotted at the Seattle Storm’s game on Friday. The Storm were hosting the New York Liberty.

https://twitter.com/circlingsports/status/1829723983257985116?s=46&t=_ANhSRjgXiq1Q7vs6QH6CA

Unfortunately, Seattle could not defend home court against New York, as the Storm fell 98-85 to the visiting Liberty. Former Storm star, Breanna Stewart, returned to the Emerald City to face her former team. Stewart was the leading scorer for both teams with 32 points.

With the Seahawks kicking off against the Denver Broncos next Sunday, one can’t help but wonder with other Seattle team members will show up to support them. Two years ago, several Mariners were present at Monday Night Football.

Of course, the biggest question will be who will raise the iconic 12th Man Flag? All these questions will certainly be answered in the coming days!

Remembering Geno Smith’s iconic line against the Broncos

The Seattle Seahawks are set to take the field against the Denver Broncos in Week 1 at Lumen Field. If this sounds familiar, it’s because we lived through this only two years ago. The 2022 Seahawks were entering their first season in a decade without Russell Wilson, and they would have to face his heavily-favored Broncos to begin this new era.

The vibes going into that fateful Monday Night Football game could not have been more opposite than they are today. Denver was the darling “it” team of the NFL to watch, with folks considering them to even be darkhorse Super Bowl contenders. Meanwhile, the Seahawks were picked to be among the worst teams in the league.

Instead, the destiny of both teams went in polar opposite directions. The Seahawks finished 9-8 that year and made the playoffs, as well as going 9-8 the following season. Meanwhile, Wilson and the Broncos had the most embarrassing season in recent memory. Although Wilson was much better in 2023, he wasn’t good enough to not be cut by Denver after only two years (and before his mega extension kicked in.)

But perhaps the most memorable part of Seattle’s 17-16 upset victory was quarterback Geno Smith’s postgame quote. Smith was largely written off, having spent several years as a backup following the terrible start to his career with the New York Jets. Well, Smith had quite the message to those who wrote him off.

https://twitter.com/NFL/status/1828870284449108433

Smith finished the 2022 campaign as the official Comeback Player of the Year. Now, he is entering into his third season as the starting quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks. With a pair of Pro Bowl appearances to his name, I think it’s safe to say Smith still isn’t interested in writing back.

Watch Seahawks QB Geno Smith throw preseason TD to DK Metcalf

Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald wanted to see the starting offense play a productive series or two in Saturday’s preseason finale versus the Cleveland Browns. Quarterback Geno Smith had almost the entire first-team offense available at his disposal, minus center Connor Williams, and veteran wide receiver Tyler Lockett.

Seattle’s first offensive series represented Smith’s preseason debut. Smith was outstanding on the first drive, completing 4-of-5 passing attempts for 62 yards and a touchdown. He completed the scoring drive with this 21-yard touchdown to DK Metcalf.

It capped a five-play, 62 yard efficient scoring drive. Smith took possession on his own 38-yard line and swiftly completed a 25-yard pass to Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Smith later hit Kenny McIntosh for nine yards before targeting Smith-Njigba for another seven-yard gain. The next play was Metcalf’s 21-yard score.

Smith’s starting offensive line had Charles Cross at left tackle, Laken Tomlinson at left guard, Olu Oluwatimi at center, Anthony Bradford at right guard, and George Fant at right tackle.

It was a picture-perfect start for Smith, who showcased terrific command of Ryan Grubb’s offense. Hopefully Smith’s touchdown strike to Metcalf is a sign of things to come. Smith and Grubb could combine to oversee an explosive unit in Seattle this season.

Seahawks starters will play in preseason finale

Seahawks starters will play in preseason finale

All 32 NFL franchises have difficult decisions to make regarding whether or not their starters should play in the preseason finale. Some coaching staffs view it as the last live-action opportunity to prepare for the regular-season campaign. Others view it as too risky in regards to injuries.

Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald sides with the former belief. Macdonald announced that the starters will play in Saturday’s Week 3 preseason game versus the Cleveland Browns.

“The plan is you’ll see a lot of starters to start the game,’’ Macdonald confirmed following Thursday’s practice. “How many reps and all that it (will be) kind of on a per-person-type basis. But the plan is to see a good amount of the guys. We got a couple nicks and bruises here (so) we’ll hold some guys out. So there’s some guys you might not see that you might expect. (But) for the most part, most of the starters will start the game, Geno included.”

It’s extremely notable. Geno Smith and the offensive starters haven’t played a single snap through the first two preseason contests. That will change in Saturday’s preseason finale at Lumen Field, with the likes of D.K. Metcalf and Kenneth Walker III joining Smith and Co. on the field.

Macdonald ruled out starting center Connor Williams, who just began practicing this earlier this week. The other starters on the offensive line should play, including left tackle Charles Cross and left guard Laken Tomlinson. The right guard position is still being fought for by Anthony Bradford and rookie Christian Haynes.

“Offense, we just hadn’t had a chance to get everybody out there and operate, especially at our home field,’’ Macdonald said. “Go through all those things. And there’s something to putting the pads on and actually going out and moving the ball before we do it for real. Defensively, we only got six snaps in the first game so (this is) an opportunity to go out there and put some more good film on tape and have some confidence going into the first game.”

The defensive starters could also use the warm-up. They’ve totaled just six snaps through two exhibition showings. They started the debut preseason game against the Los Angeles Chargers, but forced a quick three-and-out, limiting their time on the field. Browns starter Deshaun Watson is expected to get the nod at quarterback.

The Seahawks will use Saturday’s preseason finale as a dress rehearsal to get ready for Bo Nix and the Denver Broncos, their Week 1 opponent.

Geno Smith posts cryptic message on his instagram

Geno Smith posts cryptic message on his instagram

Could quarterback drama be brewing in Seattle? Earlier on Friday, we at Seahawks Wire posted about a report regarding Geno Smith seeking a new contract with the Seattle Seahawks. Despite being only in the second year of a three-year contract, Smith is apparently seeking further guarantees to remain in Seattle.

Garafolo made sure to mention he does not feel as if the Seahawks are going to make any imminent moves regarding the apparent situation. Quite frankly, it makes sense why they would not. Smith is under team control for two more years, including this one, and Seattle typically does not begin renegotiations until there is only one year remaining left on the current contract.

However, Smith may be letting some opinions be known about the situation. Smith has cleared his instagram of all pictures. Not just any of him in Seahawks attrie, but a complete scrub. He also shared two songs on his story with these lyrics, which can be seen in the tweet below.

Now, it should absolutely be noted that if you were to go to Smith’s instagram account, you will not see either song on his story. At least not at the time of this article’s publication. He has taken both down.

While the music may no longer be featured, screen recordings of them still exist as you can see. It is clear Smith wanted a message of sorts out there. Could this be a not-so-subtle hint towards his employer? It wouldn’t be the first time we have seen something like this. With how prevalent social media is these days, athletes in the modern era have increasingly used the tactic of scrubbing their socials if they are unhappy with a contract situation. We saw this recently with Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray, who did something similar a few years ago.

Or, could this merely be Smith making a motivational message for himself as the tweet above suggests? Smith has reportedly not moved on from the chip on his shoulder, as it makes him the player he is. Perhaps Smith is simply taking a step back from social media to focus on his efforts for the upcoming season.

For now, we can only speculate. But what we do know for certain is we at Seahawks Wire will keep you, dear reader, informed of any breaking news regarding this increasingly interesting situation.

Geno Smith has reportedly approached the Seahawks for a new contract

Well, here is an interesting tidbid for your Friday news dump. Seattle Seahawks starting quarterback Geno Smith and his team have reportedly approached the franchise about a new contract extension, per NFL Insider Mike Garafolo.

Currently, Smith is on the second year of a three-year deal he signed prior to the 2023 season. This contract is set to expire at the conclusion of the 2025 season. The Seahawks have already restructured his contract during the offseason to help alleviate cap space concerns.

Garafolo spoke about this situation on Jason Puckett’s podcast:

“They’ve talked about it, they’ve tried to talk about it, I know that,” Garolo stated, in regards to Smith and his team. “That’s been something that’s been broached this offseason. So you know, (that) could be something that gets done before week 1 and is addressed by the team.”

However, Garofolo was clear that he did not get the sense this is a decision Seattle’s front office is racing to get done at this time.

“It didn’t seem like it was imminent on their (Seattle’s) part,” Garafolo continued.

At this present moment, Geno Smith counts for $26.4 million against the cap. Seattle could theoretically extend him to help further reduce his stress to the cap situation. However, age wise, Smith isn’t exactly a spring chicken. He is 33 years old, and going to turn 34 in October.

Granted, his 33 might be a little different than most other 33’s when it comes to quarterback. By virtue of spending so many years as a backup, Smith does not quite have the mileage on his body his contemporaries who have been starting for years have. Still, age eventually catches up to everyone, and Smith has already dealt with some injury concerns this offseason, even if they did not result in anything long term.

We at Seahawks Wire will continue to monitor this situation and give you any developments should they come.

Geno Smith discusses the value in Seahawks-Titans joint practices

The Seattle Seahawks have concluded their first of two joint practices with the Tennessee Titans. For the first time since 1991, Seattle has taken the field with an opponent but not in a game scenario. This is a rather unique scenario the Seahawks franchise, and its players, are obviously not familiar with. But so far, those who participated are finding the value in it.

Seattle’s starting quarterback, Geno Smith, spoke to the media following the practice. When asked about what he is gaining from this experience, Smith was quick to answer with a positive response.

“Just the competition,” Smith exclaimed. “Being able to go against someone else, anothter team. Getting that good, fun competition out here on the field. It is always great to go against each other. You got DK and Riq Woolen who compete against each other almost every day. Then you come out here and you see the difference in cornerbacks, receivers, going up against different guys, seeing different looks, different schemes. I think overall the competition, that’s the main thing.”

Having the opportunity to face a different opponent is something this Seahawks team has clearly been craving. Last week at practice there were multiple fights among the players. Ultimately, issues were resolved without any serious injuries. Head coach Mike Macdonald explained the situation to the media and explicitly said “we’ve been out here, I don’t know, 14, 16 days — we’re tired of going up against one another, you know.”

Having these joint practices as an outlet for Seattle’s players seems to be exactly what the doctor ordered, and it has been noticed by their quarterback.
