The Big Ten and Big East announced the matchups for the 2023 Gavitt Tipoff Games and the Wisconsin MBB team will participate in the events.

The Big Ten and Big East announced the matchups for the 2023 Gavitt Tipoff Games on Tuesday and the Wisconsin men’s basketball team will participate in the events. In the sixth all-time meeting between the two programs, the Badgers will travel to face Providence on November 14.

To this point, Wisconsin holds a 1-4 record over five games all-time against the Friars, most recently falling to them 63-58 in the 2021 Gavitt Games in November of 2021.

The Badgers will have their entire starting lineup back from the 2022-2023 season as well as their coaching staff, but Providence will be operating under new head coach Kim English this season after Ed Cooley left for Georgetown in March.

In what could be a make-or-break season for Greg Gard and his staff in Madison, they’ll draw a tough non-conference road test early in 2023. Overall, Gard has produced an 8-5 record all-time against the Big East.

Twitter Takeaways from Iowa’s gritty road victory at Seton Hall

Twitter reacted to Kris Murray’s career high and the Hawkeyes’ big win as Iowa took care of Seton Hall, 83-67, in the Gavitt Tipoff Games.

How about that for a big road victory!

Just three games into the season, Iowa has defeated a solidly notable opponent in the Big East’s Seton Hall. They were dominant defensively, really throwing their opponents off of their game despite being on the road.

The Pirates shot under 36% from the field, and had double the turnovers (16) as Iowa. For most of the first half, Seton Hall looked absolutely unable to score. That really aided an Iowa offense that struggled a bit early on to score as well.

Thankfully, they did pick it up on the back of a Kris Murray 29 point performance. That matched Murray’s career high as he finished 10-of-20 from the floor and drained a trio of 3-pointers.

They don’t look like they are in midseason form yet, but Iowa showed a ton of exciting things against Seton Hall. There was excitement about their defensive potential heading into the season, and they locked down tonight. Filip Rebraca in particular was a force on the interior, Tony Perkins pestering the Pirates as well.

It is a win that can prove to be big come the end of the season, and here are the top social media reactions.

Iowa set to play Seton Hall, full 2022 Gavitt Tipoff Games schedule released

Per CBS Sports Jon Rothstein, Iowa is headed to Seton Hall in the 2022 Gavitt Games. Plus, a look at the entire 2022 Gavitt Games slate.

While official dates and times are still to be determined, CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein reported that the matchups for the 2022 Gavitt Tipoff Games are officially set.

The annual inter-conference challenge between the Big Ten and the Big East features eight games. Introduced in the 2015-16 men’s college basketball season, Iowa is set for its fourth appearance in the Gavitt Tipoff Games.

The Hawkeyes will reportedly travel to take on Seton Hall. Iowa owns a 1-2 mark in the Gavitt Tipoff Games, beating Marquette in 2015, 89-61, losing to Seton Hall in Iowa City in 2016, 91-83, and falling to DePaul in 2019, 93-78.

In Iowa’s 2015 win over Marquette, the Hawkeyes were paced by guard Peter Jok’s 20 points and 4-of-6 made 3-pointers. Jarrod Uthoff, Anthony Clemmons, Mike Gesell, and Adam Woodbury all added double-figure scoring for Iowa in the win over the Golden Eagles.

In 2016 against Seton Hall, Jok had another monster night, registering 30 points and 10 rebounds. Tyler Cook added 24 points for the Hawkeyes, but it wasn’t enough as Seton Hall shot 47.1% from 3-point range, 50.8% from the floor and had three different 20-plus scorers that night. The Pirates’ Myles Powell scored 26, Desi Rodriguez added 25 and Khadeen Carrington chipped in with 20 points.

The Hawkeyes will be looking to exact some revenge for that setback in 2016 and have a chance to regain the all-time series lead over Seton Hall as well as even their mark in the Gavitt Tipoff Games. Iowa and Seton Hall have met just twice. The first meeting took place in late December of 1982 when Iowa routed Seton Hall, 85-63.

Here’s a look at all of the 2022 Gavitt Tipoff Games matchups with last season’s overall and conference records attached.

Penn State’s matchup for 2022 Gavitt Games set

Here is who Penn State men’s basketball will play in the 2022 Gavitt Games

Penn State men’s basketball has another non-conference opponent reportedly set for the 2022-23 college basketball season. According to college football insider Jon Rothstein, Penn State’s matchup in the 2022 Gavitt Games will pit head coach Micah Shrewsberry against one of his former schools.

Penn State will reportedly host Butler in the 2022 Gavitt Games, according to Rothstein on College Hoops Today. No date has been confirmed at this time.

Penn State is 1-2 all-time in games against Butler, but the two programs have not faced each other on the basketball court since 1992, during Penn State’s season as an independent in its transition from playing in the Atlantic-10 and the Big Ten. Penn State won the most recent meeting in the series with a 67-64 victory over Butler on February 12, 1992. Butler won a game earlier in the season on January 21, 1992 with a 79-75 decision on the road. Butler won the only other meeting in the series in 1975.

Shrewsberry was an assistant coach at Butler from 2008 through 2011 under former Butler head coach Brad Stevens. Butler is coming off back-to-back losing seasons after going 14-19 last season.

The Gavitt Tipoff Games is an annual eight-game series between schools from the Big Ten and Big East. The series is named after Dave Gavitt, a former athletic director at Providence and the Big East’s original commissioner.

Penn State is 2-1 in games played as part of the Gavitt Games. Penn State won its 2015 matchup against DePaul but lost to DePaul in overtime in 2018. Penn State scored a blowout win at Georgetown in 2019. Penn State did not participate in the 2021 Gavitt Games. The Big East won last year’s challenge, 6-2.

Here are the matchups for this year’s Gavitt Games as reported by Rothstein;

  • Villanova at Michigan State
  • Indiana at Xavier
  • Iowa at Seton Hall
  • Marquette at Purdue
  • Butler at Penn State
  • Northwestern at Georgetown
  • Nebraska at St. John’s
  • DePaul at Minnesota

Michigan State’s upcoming road trip to Butler this season is considered one of the top Gavitt Games and Big Ten-ACC Challenge match-ups, according to Andy Katz.

With the announcement of the Gavitt Games and Big Ten-ACC Challenge match-ups in the past week, Katz took a look at the top games and put together a top 10 list. The Spartans’ battle with Louisville as part of the Big Ten-ACC Challenge didn’t crack the list, but their road trip to Hinkle Fieldhouse to play Butler did.

Rare treat: Ohio State and Xavier to meet in 2021 Gavitt Games

Are you excited for this matchup? The two have only faced each other twice prior.

For only the third time in the history of the two programs, in-state foes Ohio State and Xavier will meet on the basketball court according to sources close to CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein.

It comes by way of the annual Gavitt Games that began in 2015, which pits Big Ten teams against those from the Big East. In this case, the draw has the Buckeyes facing the Musketeers.

You probably remember one of the matchups. In the 2007 NCAA Tournament, No. 1 seed Ohio State was almost upset by No. 8 seeded Xavier save for some dramatics and heroics from Ron Lewis and Mike Conley, Jr. OSU would go on to win that game in overtime by a score of 78-71.

The only other matchup between the two occurred in 1984 when the Musketeers knocked the Buckeyes out of the NIT Tournament in the opening round by a score of 60-57. It too was an overtime thriller.

Ohio State is 3-0 in the Gavitt Games to date — beating Providence (2016), Creighton (2018), and Villanova (2019). No time or date has been announced for the 2021 version yet, but the game will take place at Xavier. We’ll of course have further details as they are confirmed and emerge.

The Gavitt Games are an annual series of games between the Big Ten and Big East conferences that allows for some unique and fresh match-ups to filter into regular season play.

This year, Michigan State basketball will have the opportunity to head to the historic Hinkle Fieldhouse wbere they will face Butler. Official tip off times and dates have yet to be announced.

This will be an opportunity for MSU to avenge the heartbreaking 2010 Final Four loss.

Report: Gavitt Games ‘unlikely to take place’ this year

The plan is to move forward with the Gavitt Games returning for the 2021-22 season.

[jwplayer vDCx2jju]

Jon Rothstein continues to help us piece together the 2020-21 Michigan State basketball schedule, and he reported on Wednesday what we had originally thought to be the case last week — no Gavitt Games this year.

Last week, we tried reading the tea leaves of numerous reports and it seemed apparent Michigan State would not participate in this year’s Gavitt Tipoff Games. There simply appeared to be no room in the Spartans’ schedule based on previous reports and there were thoughts that only geographically close matchups (i.e. Northwestern-DePaul or Nebraska-Creighton) would take place in the event so it should come as no shock that Rothstein is reporting the event won’t occur this year.

Rothstein added that the plan is to move forward with the Gavitt Games returning next year — which Michigan State should certainly be part of based on contract obligations.

With the Gavitt Games officially off the table, Michigan State still has two spots to fill on their non-conference portion of the 2020-21 schedule. We can expect those two slots to be filled by traditional “buy games” with two mid-major opponents visiting the Breslin Center.

Here is how the non-conference schedule is appearing to shape up based on reports from college basketball insiders:

  • Nov. 25 – 27: Orlando Invitational (three games; tournament field includes Gonzaga, Auburn, Xavier, Belmont, St. Louis, Boise State and eighth TBD team)
  • Dec. 1: Champions Classic vs. Duke
  • Dec. 8 or 9: ACC-Big Ten Challenge vs. TBD team
  • December: Two more non-conference games

Multiple reports indicate MSU unlikely to play in Gavitt Games

A pair of reports from college basketball insiders indicates the Spartans won’t take place in this year’s Gavitt Tipoff Games

[jwplayer W4ONB6vg]

The reports keeping coming and the puzzle pieces keep sliding into place on Michigan State basketball’s 2020-21 schedule.

Yesterday, I published an article on the latest status of the Spartans’ 2020-21 college basketball schedule with a few unknowns still lingering. One of those question marks was the Gavitt Tipoff Games — which traditionally pits the Big Ten and Big East, similar to the ACC-Big Ten Challenge — but a pair of reports from college basketball insiders indicates the Spartans won’t take place in this year’s event.

Andy Katz of NCAA.com reported the Big East is “committed” to playing their agreed-upon series of games with the Big 12, appearing to put the Gavitt Games on the back burner for the league. Katz added that a handful of Big Ten-Big East games could be played if the teams are located close to each other, such as Northwester-DePaul or Nebraska-Creighton.

Earlier in the day, Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports tweeted that the Big East has a target window of Dec. 12 – 23 to play potentially four conference games, which basically takes up the entire back half of December from playing non-conference games.

So with Michigan State having no nearby Big East opponents, and their schedule basically booked up through Dec. 9 and the Big Ten schedule most likely starting no later than early January, it seems almost impossible to squeeze in the Gavitt Games this year.

Keep in mind, that this is all speculation at this point since neither Michigan State nor the Gavitt Games have announced anything but it does make sense for the Spartans to skip the event this year. Their non-conference schedule was stripped down from normally 11 games to only seven because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and nearly all of those seven games are already filled up with high-level competition.

Here is the current schedule breakdown based on reports from the past few weeks:

  • Nov. 25 – 27: Orlando Invitational (three games; tournament field includes Gonzaga, Auburn, Xavier, Belmont, St. Louis, Boise State and eighth TBD team)
  • Dec. 1: Champions Classic vs. Duke
  • Dec. 8 or 9: ACC-Big Ten Challenge vs. TBD team
  • December – March: 20-game Big Ten conference schedule

This leaves the Spartans with two non-conference games left to add to the schedule. If teams are thinking more locally-based when finding opponents, don’t be surprised if the Spartans add the Oakland Grizzlies and one of the in-state Mid American Conference foes to round out the schedule.
