Stock Report: Ducks see nothing but risers in 81-7 win over Portland State

Gary Bryant Jr. and Ty Thompson had big days on Saturday. The same can be said for Bryce Boettcher. Here are our biggest stock-risers of the week.

With an opening game against an FCS school where you put up a program-record 81 points and win by a margin of 74, it feels wrong to say that anyone saw their stock drop on the day.

For the Oregon Ducks, there was a long list of players — mostly young players — who got onto the field Saturday afternoon in the 81-7 win against the Portland State Vikings who showed what they could do after a long and hard offseason. We want to highlight them.

Throughout the season, we will bring this Stock Report to you every week after Saturday’s game, singling out the players who performed the best and saw their stock rise the most, and also identifying a few players who may have had a tough day.

As you would expect in the season-opener, there weren’t any players who saw their stock fall in Oregon’s dominant win over the Vikings.

Here are the guys whose stock rose the most in my mind:

Meet the new Ducks: What UO transfers want Oregon fans to know about them

“Hard-working, dedicated, unselfish.” We asked Oregon’s incoming transfers what they want Duck fans to know about them. The answers didn’t disappoint.

The 2023 college football season unofficially kicked off on Monday afternoon for the Oregon Ducks with the annual media day taking place inside the club level at Autzen Stadium.

There, media members had a chance to sit down and talk to more than 40 of the players on the team and get their perspectives going into the new season. It offered an opportunity to talk to a handful of new players on the team for the first time.

That’s what I was focused on. With more than 50 players on the roster wearing the green and yellow for the first time, I wanted to find out what Oregon fans who knew nothing about these players should know about them.

[lawrence-related id=45593]

What better source than the players themselves? I asked the incoming transfers — all but two of them I could get to due to interview scheduling — what they wanted Duck fans to know about them and who they are going into the season.

These are the answers I got.

Trojans Wire discusses Gary Bryant transfer to Oregon and its full thought process

Gary Bryant’s choice to go to Oregon contained some familiar dimensions and some more complicated ones. We discussed them on our recent #USC show.

The big news for USC football this past week was Dylan Raiola picking Georgia over the Trojans, but another big story over the past 10 days was Gary Bryant transferring to Oregon.

Ducks Wire wrote the following about Bryant:

“If 247Sports’ prediction is correct, Bryant could end up being a valuable addition to Oregon’s offense. Following Oregon’s 2023 spring game, WR seems to be a position that could stand to benefit from some added depth. While the top three or four Ducks wideouts look strong going into next season, there are question marks below them on the depth chart.

“On 3rd downs last year, one of Bo Nix’s favorite targets was Chase Cota. Cota was targeted frequently largely because of his ability to find soft spots in opposing defenses’ pass coverage. Looking to 2023, Bryant could play a similar role. One of the strongest parts of Bryant’s game is his route-running and ability to get into open spots in the secondary when the opposing defense employs zone coverage. The combination of those two strengths could make Bryant useful for Will Stein in 3rd and 4th down situations next season, much like Cota was in 2022.”

We discussed this story with Mark Rogers at The Voice of College Football, looking into some of its different dimensions:

Gary Bryant could have all-Pac-12 season for Oregon, but USC isn’t worried

.@Ducks_Wire hopes @DonJamesSports’ forecast for a big year comes true, but #USC won’t spend time worrying about it.

On Saturday night, former USC Trojans wide receiver Gary Bryant Jr. announced his commitment to Oregon.

After a breakout season with 44 catches for 579 yards and seven touchdowns. Bryant was also USC’s primary returner in 2021, returning 16 kicks for 413 yards and 11 punts for 50 yards as a sophomore in 2021.

Bryant saw his role drastically diminish with the Trojans in 2022.

Bryant recorded two catches for 15 yards in just two game safter incoming transfers like Jordan Addison, Brenden Rice, and Mario Williams pushed him out of the rotation.

Now he will come to Eugene and compete with Traeshon Holden, Tez Johnson, and Kris Hutson for a starting spot alongside Troy Franklin.

Nix finished with 29 touchdown passes, 14 rushing scores and one TD catch in 13 games last season after transferring to Oregon from Auburn.

He threw just seven interceptions and finished with an Oregon-record 71.9 completion percentage. His rushing touchdowns were just one shy of former Heisman Trophy Winner Marcus Mariota’s single-season record.

Bryant hopes this is the perfect marriage of opportunity and compatability, getting more playing time but still being in an elite offense, a more favorable equation than what he faced at USC.

Updated scholarship count for Oregon after recent transfer portal additions

A look at Oregon’s updated scholarship count after adding WR Gary Bryant Jr. and TE Kaden Ludwick on Saturday.

The Oregon Ducks continued to make some roster moves over the weekend, utilizing a couple of the scholarships that they had available to them after seeing some former players leave Eugene via the transfer portal earlier this spring.

On Saturday morning, the Ducks added former Colorado TE Kaden Ludwick, a player from Clackamas, Oregon. On Saturday night, Oregon continued things by picking up a commitment from former USC WR Gary Bryant Jr., one of the top available players in the portal.

It is unclear whether or not Ludwick is going to be on scholarship at Oregon, or if he is joining the Ducks as a preferred walk-on — a spokesperson for the U of O was unable to clarify when reached for comment.

So with those two additions to the roster, where does the Ducks’ scholarship count now stand, and how many more do they have available to use before reaching the limit of 85? Let’s take a look.

Former USC receiver Gary Bryant transfers to Dan Lanning and Oregon Ducks

.@Ducks_Wire got a talented and capable receiver for Bo Nix. The USC-Oregon game on Nov. 11 is now extra spicy.

The USC Trojans watched Briton Allen transfer to Utah. Now Gary Bryant has transferred to Oregon. USC has done really well in grabbing transfers from other Pac-12 programs, but the door has swung the other way in this particular instance.

Bryant knew that with USC’s Dorian Singer and Mario Williams being the featured wideouts in the 2023 offense, he likely wasn’t going to get the touches or opportunities he truly wanted. He did the math and entered the transfer portal. His landing spot: Eugene, where Oregon will compete with USC for Pac-12 supremacy. The Ducks will host the Trojans in Autzen Stadium on Nov. 11 in a game which is now extra spicy.

Ducks Wire has more on Bryant:

“After a breakout season with 7 touchdowns as a sophomore in 2021, Bryant saw his role drastically diminish with the Trojans in 2022 after incoming transfers like Jordan Addison, Brenden Rice, and Mario Williams pushed him out of the rotation. Now he will come to Eugene and compete with the likes of Traeshon Holden, Tez Johnson, and Kris Hutson for a starting spot alongside Troy Franklin.

“With Bo Nix returning for one more season in Eugene, Bryant has to feel confident that he will be surrounded by elite athletes who can help him take his game to the next level.”

Former USC receiver Gary Bryant lists top three transfer options

Two #Pac12 schools are in the mix for former USC WR Gary Bryant.

Former USC Trojan receiver Gary Bryant Jr., who is now a third-year sophomore, entered the NCAA transfer portal back in January. He is now down to three schools: Arizona, Texas A&M, and Oregon.

Bryant is the highest-ranked available receiver in the transfer portal per 247Sports.

In 2021 Bryant had 44 catches for 579 yards and seven touchdowns, returning 16 kicks for 413 yards and 11 punts for 50 yards.

Bryant chose to shut things down after three games and redshirt for the season after not getting a ton of playing time.

Bryant still has a ton left to prove and the talent to make a real statement. He was a top 50 prospect, ranked No. 46 overall in the industry-generated 247Sports Composite and No. 50 in the 247Sports rankings out of Corona Centennial HS in Corona (California).

Report: USC transfer WR Gary Bryant to take visit to Eugene

It looks like the Ducks aren’t done trying to add to the WR depth chart this offseason.

The Oregon Ducks don’t seem to be finished when it comes to the transfer portal.

A new report from 247Sports shows that former USC Trojans wide receiver Gary Bryant Jr. is scheduling a visit to Eugene next week to check out the Ducks before making his final transfer decision.

Bryant has already visited Arizona and Miami, and he plans to take a visit to Texas A&M as well before making a decision at the end of the month.

The Ducks are currently stacked at the wide receiver position, with guys like Troy Franklin, Kris Hutson, and Traeshon Holden expected to lead a group that also features young talents like Kyler Kasper, Jurrion Dickey, and Ashton Cozart.

Despite that, it appears that Oregon coaches and players are still working hard to try and get Bryant into the mix, according to Greg Biggens.

“Junior Adams (WR coach) wants Gary really bad,” Bryant said. “Bo Nix has been reaching out all the time, recruiting Gary and telling him how much they need him.

“They have some good receivers already there but they said they don’t really have a guy like Gary who can do what he does and return punts and kicks as well.”

Bryant had a great season in 2021, scoring 7 touchdowns in total, but the increased competition in 2022 with Jordan Addison and Brenden Rice in the picture caused his target share to drop. Now he’s looking for a new team to play for.

Might that be the Ducks? They will get a chance to try and convince him of that next week.

Gary Bryant Transfer Portal Profile

USC receiver Gary Bryant Jr. enters transfer portal

When you look at the depth and quality #USC has assembled at the WR spot, it’s clear that Gary Bryant wasn’t going to play much. Simple math.

USC wide receiver Gary Bryant Jr. entered the transfer portal. It’s a decision he frankly needed to make.

One can question plenty of transfer portal decisions, but this isn’t one of them. It is readily apparent to anyone and everyone who watched USC in 2022 that the Trojans were absolutely loaded at the wide receiver spot. This was the deepest and best position group on the roster, not counting quarterback, where Caleb Williams is a one-man show. USC wasn’t deep at quarterback. Wide receiver gave USC the marriage of quality and depth which was hard to find at all other position groups.

When Jordan Addison and Mario Williams got hurt this past season, it wasn’t a problem. Tahj Washington stepped up. So did Kyle Ford. So did Michael Jackson. Brenden Rice had a spectacular Cotton Bowl against Tulane. Now we have Dorian Singer of Arizona coming to USC via the transfer portal to essentially take over Addison’s role as WR1.

With so many quality receivers in the room, Bryant did the simple math and correctly realized he needed to go elsewhere to get significant playing time in pursuit of an NFL opportunity. It’s the right decision for him. We wish Gary the best at his next stop and beyond.
