Colts routed by Jaguars, 37-20: Everything we know from Week 6

Everything we know from the Colts’ loss to the Jaguars in Week 6.

The Indianapolis Colts (3-3) were defeated by the Jacksonville Jaguars (4-2) on Sunday, 37-20, at TIAA Bank Field.

The Week 6 loss was the biggest deficit the Colts faced this season and even though they showed some life in the fourth quarter, it was far too late after falling down 31-6 during the third quarter.

The Colts now have lost nine consecutive games on the road against the Jaguars, who are alone in first place in the AFC South.

Here’s everything we know from the Week 6 loss:

Announcer Spero Dedes gives Gardner Minshew the interception jinx

Announcer Spero Dedes should not have pointed out that Gardner Minshew hadn’t thrown a pick all season. We all know what happened next.

If there’s one thing you never want to do as an announcer, it’s to state that a quarterback hasn’t thrown an interception in whatever time period you want to bring up. Because we’re pretty sure that’s when the interception will happen. Like mentioning a no-hitter while it’s happening, you just don’t want to mess with the Sports Gods.

Veteran announcer Spero Dedes apparently forgot himself in this regard. Albert was calling Sunday’s game between the Indianapolis Colts and the Jacksonville Jaguars, and with 4:50 left in the first half, Dedes happened to mention that Minshew hadn’t thrown a pick all season long.

See if you can guess what happened next.

I mean… we’re talking MAYBE five seconds between the installation of the Announcer Curse, and the Inevitable Result. Ouch.

Gardner Minshew up next for Colts with Anthony Richardson on IR

Gardner Minshew up next for Colts with Anthony Richardson on IR

Just when you thought we were done with it, Minshew Mania always seems to find its way back to the forefront. Quarterback Gardner Minshew has had an interesting football life. From being a standout transfer at Washington State University to now an NFL journeyman, Minshew has rarely stayed with one team for long. But when he’s had time in the spotlight, he’s used it well.

Minshew is now on his third NFL team with the Indianapolis Colts, and has already helped win them three games. Minshew took over in relief of rookie Anthony Richardson in Week 2 and guided the ship to a 31-20 win. The following week, he engineered a game-winning drive to steal an upset 22-19  victory over the Ravens in overtime. Minshew once again took over for an injured Richardson in Week 5, and what do you know, the Colts held on for a 23-16 win over the Titans.

Now it seems we’ll be seeing a lot more of Minshew for at least the next month of play.

Minshew has proven himself to be a very capable starting quarterback when given the opportunity. His win/loss record of 9-16 is misleading, as he spent the first two years of his career on some bad Jaguars teams.

There’s no such thing as having too many quality quarterbacks. If Minshew performs well and keeps the Colts winning in Richardson’s absence, he very well could find himself on his fourth NFL team next year – albeit this time as the starter.

The Indianapolis Colts (3-2) and Jacksonville Jaguars (3-2) are just about set for a crucial Week 6 matchup at TIAA Bank Field.

As the second meeting between these division-mates, the Colts will be looking to even the season series after the Jaguars came out victorious in Week 1 on the road. Meanwhile, the Colts haven’t defeated the Jaguars on the road since the 2014 season, enduring an eight-game losing streak.

Vegas has the Colts sitting as 4.5-point underdogs in this matchup, according to BetMGM.

Over at Tallysight, 90% of the analysts have the Jaguars walking away with a home victory. In terms of the 4.5-point spread, 63% of analysts believe the Jaguars will cover.

This is a pretty heavy turn toward the Jaguars. They are coming off two impressive wins in London, and they took care of business on the road against the Colts in Week 1 so it doesn’t come as a surprise.

We should expect the Colts to be competitive, though. They’ve been a scrappy team all season, and they’re getting healthier despite the fact that they’ll be without Anthony Richardson.

We’ll see if the Colts can pull off the road upset when these two AFC South teams kick off at 1:00 p.m. ET on Sunday in Duval County.

Advice and prediction

Colts: Josh Downs OVER 45.5 receiving yards (-110)

The rookie has essentially taken over the No. 2 wide receiver role through the first month of the season. He ranks second on the team in targets (33), receptions (23) and receiving yards (255) despite running the third-most routes and playing the third-most snaps among Colts wide receivers. He’s also coming off a breakout performance of six receptions for 97 yards in Week 5. Meanwhile, the Jaguars have allowed the ninth-most receiving yards (927) to the position through five games. Even with Gardner Minshew under center, Downs should be heavily involved as a quick-winning slot option, and he has a good chance of surpassing this line.

Prediction: Jaguars 24, Colts 21

Colts vs. Jaguars: 5 things to watch in Week 6

Taking a look at five things to watch in Week 6.

The Indianapolis Colts (3-2) are on the road this week to have their second matchup of the season against the Jacksonville Jaguars (3-2).

This game will create an AFC South leader with both teams sitting at a 3-2 record and the rest of the division with a 2-3 record heading into Week 6. Things haven’t been favorable for the Colts in Duval County.

They have lost eight straight games in Jacksonville and that 2014 win happens to be the last time Indy won the AFC South. The Jaguars have outscored the Colts 232-104 in their eight-game winning streak at home in this series.

The Jags will be looking to sweep Indianapolis for the first time since 2017. The Week 1 matchup was won by Jacksonville in a 31-21 game but it was a lot closer than the final score indicated.

Indy had a lead heading into the fourth quarter until the Jaguars were able to pull away late and keep a comeback attempt at bay from the Colts. This is a much-improved team in Indianapolis since that Week 1 game so there should be more confidence from the young players entering this contest.

It should be another hard-fought divisional matchup in Jacksonville. Here are five things to watch when they hit the field on Sunday:

Fantasy Football: Quarterback starts and sits for Week 6

Which quarterbacks should you start and sit for Week 6? Natalie Miller has your fantasy team covered.

Starts and sits is here to help fantasy managers make those all important last minute lineup decisions .While we won’t tell you about obvious starts such as Christian McCaffrey or Justin Jefferson, we will find players you may be waffling about and help you make a decision.

Let’s look at quarterbacks for Week 6.

Rookie Colts QB Anthony Richardson won’t play vs. Saints in Week 8

The Colts will start Gardner Minshew, not Anthony Richardson, against the Saints in a few weeks. Minshew was sacked six times the last time he played New Orleans:

The New Orleans Saints are getting a big break — their Week 8 opponent, the Indianapolis Colts, won’t have starting quarterback Anthony Richardson. Richardson has been placed on injured reserve, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, so it’ll be Gardner Minshew filling in when the Saints visit Indianapolis in a few weeks.

Richardson is dealing with a more-severe AC joint sprain than the injury Derek Carr suffered earlier this season which could sideline him for as many as eight weeks. It’s tough news for a rookie quarterback who needs these reps to develop his craft, but it’s good news for New Orleans. Richardson is exactly the sort of big-armed, athletic passer who has given their defense problems before.

Instead they’ll be facing Minshew, who the Saints sacked six times last season when he was playing for the Philadelphia Eagles (three of those coming from Cameron Jordan). He’s a competent backup but has struggled when asked to start for a longer period of time, so this matchup suddenly looks very favorable for them. We’ll check in on his progress as the Colts’ fill-in quarterback when the Saints begin preparing for him in a few weeks.

Colts confirm Gardner Minshew II will start vs. Jaguars in Week 6

Gardner Minshew II will be the Colts’ starting quarterback in his first game back at EverBank Stadium since being traded by the Jaguars.

Former Jacksonville Jaguars starting quarterback Gardner Minshew II will be under center for the Indianapolis Colts in his first game back at EverBank Stadium since being traded in 2021.

On Monday, Colts head coach Shane Steichen told reporters that the shoulder injury suffered by rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson, who started against the Jaguars in Week 1, will keep him out Sunday and perhaps longer.

Minshew, 27, has already started one game for Indianapolis this season, stepping into the lineup in Week 3 after Richardson suffered a concussion in the week prior.

Drafted in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL draft, Minshew was thrust into action in his first career game after Nick Foles suffered a broken clavicle in his Jaguars debut. Minshew started 12 games as a rookie in Jacksonville and eight games in his second season, tallying 37 touchdowns and 11 interceptions during his time with the team.

But after the Jaguars selected Trevor Lawrence with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft, Minshew was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles for a sixth-round pick that was eventually used to select cornerback Gregory Junior.

Minshew didn’t play at all when the Jaguars lost to Philadelphia during the 2022 season. He threw just two passes in the final minute of Jacksonville’s 31-21 win against the Colts in Week 1 of this season.

Indianapolis and Jacksonville are currently tied for the lead in the AFC South with matching 3-2 records, although the Jaguars currently own the tiebreaker due to their Week 1 win.
