Seahawks place original-round tender on underrated G Phil Haynes

Haynes spent most of the 2021 season on the bench, but he saw some action late after Lewis went down.

The Seahawks are currently going through some quarterback drama, but once they’ve settled on a new starter they’ll have to get to work in the trenches. Along the offensive line, they have to decide what to do with aging left tackle Duane Brown, try to get an upgrade over Ethan Pocic at center and either re-sign right tackle Brandon Shell or find a replacement.

Left guard may not seem like a high priority, but the team does appear to be searching for options here. Damien Lewis did not perform well at this spot after moving over from right guard after the team signed Gabe Jackson. Seattle has been meeting with multiple left guard prospects lately and now they’re moving to secure their best LG backup.

According to Tom Pelissero at NFL Network, the Seahawks are putting the original round tender on restricted free agent Phil Haynes, which is worth $2.54 million.

Haynes spent most of the 2021 season on the bench, but he saw some action late after Lewis went down.

As long as the Seahawks are going through a rebuild, there’s a decent chance we will see several veterans get cut or not re-signed. If Jackson is on that list, there’s a chance Andy Dickerson will decide to move Lewis back to right guard, which would put Haynes in line to start on the left side.

Seahawks: 6 candidates to be potential salary cap cuts in 2022

Keeping Quandre Diggs, Duane Brown and of the other important pieces to retain won’t come cheap.

The Seahawks have a healthy amount of cap room in 2022 with somewhere around $50 million in projected space. However, as Pete Carroll has pointed out, much of it will be spent on their own free agents. Keeping Quandre Diggs, Duane Brown and all of the other important pieces to retain won’t come cheap.

With a few ruthless cuts here and there, Seattle could still be near the top in terms of spending money if the goal is aggressively rebuilding their roster this offseason. Here are six veterans who may be salary cap cuts. All salary numbers are from Over the Cap.

Seahawks: 8 takeaways from their overtime loss to the Steelers

Here are eight takeaways from tonight’s game.

The Seattle Seahawks made it interesting after falling behind 14-0 at halftime against the Pittsburgh Steelers. They came out of the locker room a completely different team, energized and determined to change the terms of the engagement. Seattle rallied behind a huge second half for Alex Collins and eventually tied the game, forcing overtime. They couldn’t quite finish the job though, losing 23-20 on a field goal by Chris Boswell.

Here are eight takeaways from tonight’s game.

Seahawks have 2 players fined by NFL for penalties against Titans

The hits keep coming from the Seahawks’ brutal loss to the Titans in Week 2.

The hits keep coming from the Seahawks’ brutal loss to the Titans in Week 2. As if losing in overtime at home after building a 15-point lead at halftime wasn’t bad enough, a couple of players have been fined by the league for penalties they committed against Tennessee.

According to Tom Pelissero at NFL Network, right guard Gabe Jackson has been fined $12,875 for unsportsmanlike conduct, while cornerback D.J. Reed was hit up for $5,111.

Some of Seattle’s 10 flags (costing 100 yards) were well-earned. This new emphasis on taunting and unsportsmanlike conduct is absurd, though. Every year officials go completely overboard policing one particular part of the game. After a public outcry, things calm down and by the middle of the season nobody even remembers what the emphasis was.

There are still a couple months’ worth of games to go, but hopefully that’s the case for the 2021 season and this puritanical fixation on taunting.

Seahawks guards have a bet on who gets the most knockdowns

The loser buys the entire offensive line dinner.

The Seattle Seahawks’ track record with drafting offensive linemen is… pretty horrible to put it as kindly as possible. For the most part, the only good OL that have come through Seattle during the Pete Carroll era have been acquired via trade or free agency.

Last year, the front office finally hit on one when they picked LSU’s Damien Lewis in the third round. After a strong rookie year at right guard, Lewis is sliding over to left guard in 2021 to make room for the veteran Gabe Jackson. Apparently, the two of them have a bet on who will get the most knockdowns this season. The loser buys the entire offensive line dinner.

Center Kyle Fuller is considered a fair and neutral third party, so he will keep count during the season.

These guys can afford it, but that dinner will no doubt come with a hefty price-tag. As promising as Lewis looks, it’s hard to bet against Jackson.

Seahawks select offensive lineman Creed Humphrey in latest mock

The Seattle Seahawks select offensive lineman Creed Humphrey in Patrik Walker of CBS Sports’ latest mock draft.

The Seahawks have just three picks (for now) heading into the 2021 NFL draft so Seattle must choose each selection wisely. Seattle traded for guard Gabe Jackson to tighten up the offensive line, but might not yet be finished shoring up the front five.

Patrik Walker of CBS Sports has the Seahawks taking Creed Humphrey out of Oklahoma with their first pick of the draft – the No. 56 overall selection in the second round.

“With Jackson now locked into the interior of the offensive line, keep the party going by grabbing Humphrey,” Walker writes. “He can not only step in and be a Day One starter at center, but also provides an ability to flex to guard if needed — giving you more depth and competition for starter at two positions (with Jackson having right guard well in hand).”

Walker stresses that with so few picks this year, Seattle can’t afford a misfire. Seahawks fans shouldn’t worry, however, Humphrey is legit.

“Humphrey is a two-time Big-12 Offensive Lineman of the Year and a two-time First Team All-Big 12 talent who would ensure Wilson stays clean even if the Seahawks lose a body atop their interior O-line depth chart,” Walker concludes.

Seahawks down 2 spots in USA TODAY’s latest NFL power rankings

The Seattle Seahawks have slipped down two spots in the USA TODAY’s latest NFL power rankings following the first wave of free agency.

With the dust settling on the first wave of free agency and the 2021 NFL draft just around the corner, it’s time to take a look at the latest power rankings.

Nate Davis of USA TODAY has the Seahawks slipping two slots – from No. 8 down to No. 10. Davis places the blame – for lack of a better word – on Seattle’s star quarterback.

“While the division is improving around them, they’re dealing with a damage-control offseason in the winter of Russell Wilson’s discontent,” Davis writes.

It’s no secret Wilson was not pleased with the Seahawks’  offensive line performance last season but Seattle has at least attempted to address the issue with the addition of guard Gabe Jackson, who was acquired in a trade with the Raiders and promptly given a three-year extension.

With conditions satisfied, Seahawks’ trade for Gabe Jackson now official

The Seattle Seahawks have announced that all trade conditions have been satisfied so the acquisition of guard Gabe Jackson is now official.

The Seattle Seahawks have announced that all trade conditions have been satisfied so the acquisition of guard Gabe Jackson from the Las Vegas Raiders is now official.

Seattle will be sending a fifth-round selection in the 2021 NFL draft to Las Vegas in exchange for the guard, who could potentially jump in to start in place of the recently-retired Mike Iupati.

Jackson has spent his entire career with the Raiders since he was selected in the third round of the 2014 NFL draft. A dependable player, he has only missed one start in the 100 games he has played for the organization. He started all 16 regular-season contests last year.

By bringing Jackson on board, Seattle is sending a message to quarterback Russell Wilson, who has been sending his own, none-too-subtle messages, about his recent displeasure with the offensive line.

Trading for a proven starter upfront might be a step in the right direction in keeping the start signal-caller happy.

For more on Jackson, here’s some informative intel from the folks over at Raiders Wire.

Seattle Seahawks now only hold 3 picks in the 2021 NFL draft

After a number of trades over the last couple of years, the Seattle Seahawks now only hold three picks in the 2021 NFL draft.

The National Football League has released the updated round-by-round selection order for the 2020 NFL draft.

The Seattle Seahawks currently only hold three picks in this year’s event in April after most recently dealing their fifth-rounder to the Las Vegas Raiders to acquire guard Gabe Jackson.

The trade and the loss of the draft pick will become official once Jackson clears his physical.

So as of this date, Seattle is set to select in Round 2 at No. 56 overall, in Round 4 at No. 129 overall and in Round 7 at No. 250 overall.

Pete Carroll and John Schneider usually find a way to significantly increase their number of draft picks, although this year could be quite different for a number of reasons.

The COVID-19 pandemic changed things dramatically for NFL over the last year, including the cancellation of numerous college games and the combine – the premier scouting event of the season.

Having to rely only on college pro days, without getting a chance to fully vet all the prospects, teams could be hesitant in the draft process.

Seattle could very well attempt to build its roster this season by scouring the next couple waves of free agency instead.

Regardless of what the Seahawks opt to do, the NFL draft is set to take place from April 29 to May 1 in Cleveland, OH.

Seahawks trading 2021 5th-round pick to Raiders for guard Gabe Jackson

The Seahawks are trading a 2021 NFL 5th-round draft pick to the Las Vegas Raiders for guard Gabe Jackson. A peace offering to Russell Wilson?

Trade alert! The Seattle Seahawks are finally making an offensive line move to keep their quarterback and the fan base happy.

Seattle is trading a 2021 NFL draft pick to the Las Vegas Raiders for Gabe Jackson, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Jeremy Fowler.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero is reporting the deal is for a 2021 fifth-round selection.

Jackson was originally selected by the Raiders in the third round of the 2014 NFL draft out of Mississippi State.

Seahawks signal-caller Russell Wilson has been none-too-quiet about his displeasure with the offensive line play as of late, and this move could be something of a peace offering to the star quarterback ahead of the season.
