Jaguars elevate practice squad WR for Week 13

Jaguars elevate practice squad WR for Week 13

The Jacksonville Jaguars promoted wide receiver Elijah Cooks from their practice squad via standard elevation for their Week 13 matchup with the Houston Texans, the club announced on Saturday.

Cooks will be active for the second time this season. He logged three offensive snaps in Jacksonville’s Week 9, 28-23 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

A second-year pro, Cooks signed with the Jaguars as an undrafted free agent out of San Jose State following the 2023 NFL draft and made Jacksonville’s 53-player roster for his rookie season. He caught three passes for 38 yards in nine appearances.

Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson named Cooks among the potential replacements for starting wide receiver Gabe Davis, who suffered a season-ending knee injury against the Detroit Lions in Week 11, in Jacksonville’s offense moving forward.

Parker Washington, Devin Duvernay and Tim Jones, members of Jacksonville’s active roster, could also see their utilization increase with Davis sidelined.

“Yeah, Parker takes a big step forward, obviously. It’s a big role for him. Devin Duvernay increased his role, but we’ve got Elijah Cooks, Joshua Cephus, Austin Trammell’s been elevated [from the practice squad] a couple of times,” Pederson said Friday. “Any of those guys can step up. Tim Jones can obviously increase his role a little bit more offensively.”

Jacksonville vs. Houston is scheduled to kick off at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday, at EverBank Stadium.

The Jaguars are now without two starting wide receivers for the rest of the 2024 season.

After losing slot receiver Christian Kirk to a collarbone injury in Week 8, Jacksonville placed outside pass-catcher Gabe Davis on its injured reserve during its Week 12 bye with a reported meniscus tear.

Davis, who signed a three-year, $39 million free-agent contract with Jacksonville in March, finished the campaign with 20 receptions for 239 yards and two touchdowns.

Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson on Friday identified potential candidates to replace Davis in Jacksonville’s offense moving forward, including Parker Washington, Devin Duvernay and Tim Jones among active roster members and Elijah Cooks, Joshua Cephus and Austin Trammell from the team’s practice squad.

Washington, in particular, could see his usage increase further. He has averaged nearly 35 offensive snaps per game since Week 8, largely due to Kirk’s absence, after logging almost 15 per game over the first seven matchups of the season.

“Yeah, Parker takes a big step forward, obviously. It’s a big role for him,” Pederson said.

“Devin Duvernay increased his role, but we’ve got Elijah Cooks, Joshua Cephus, Austin Trammell’s been elevated [from the practice squad] a couple of times. Any of those guys can step up. Tim Jones can obviously increase his role a little bit more offensively. But really Parker’s the guy that kind of steps into that role.”

Washington has 10 receptions for 118 yards this season, his second with the Jaguars since Jacksonville selected him at No. 185 overall in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL draft. He caught 16 passes for 132 yards and two touchdowns as a rookie.

Washington has also returned six points for 24 yards on average this year, including a 96-yard touchdown against the New England Patriots in Week 7.

Pederson expressed confidence in Washington’s development with the Jaguars this season and his ability to step into the starting lineup based on his previous experience doing so.

“I’ve seen a lot. His growth, maturity, understanding what we are asking of him, what he can do within the system. He and [Jaguars quarterback] Trevor [Lawrence] being on the same page. Just the growth. The growth that he’s made.” Pederson explained.

“This’ll be a great opportunity, much like the end of last season where he stepped up big in Christian’s absence, he’s got to do it again. That’s part of being a backup. He doesn’t — and I can understand this — think of himself as a backup, which is great. I can understand that, but now he gets an opportunity to be the guy. So, a lot of confidence in him and a lot of trust in him.”

Duvernay, Jones and Trammell have combined for five receptions and 69 yards this season. Cooks caught three passes for 38 yards as a rookie in 2023 but has yet to log a statistic this season. Cephus, an undrafted rookie, has yet to appear in a game with Jacksonville.

Jaguars move WR Gabe Davis to, RB Keilan Robinsion from IR

The Jaguars moved starting wide receiver Gabe Davis to and rookie running back Keilan Robinson from their injured reserve on Tuesday, ending the former’s season and beginning the latter’s.

Davis was ruled out for the season with a reported meniscus tear, suffered in Jacksonville’s Week 11 loss to the Detroit Lions, by Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson on Monday.

“He is going to miss the rest of the season. It is confirmed, this morning,” Pederson said. “Gosh, I hate it for him. He’s battled through some injuries this season but he was in good spirits today when I saw him. But he’ll miss the remainder of the year.”

Davis finished his first season with the Jaguars having caught 20 passes for 239 yards and two touchdowns. He signed a three-year, $39 million free-agent contract with Jacksonville in March after posting 163 receptions for 2,730 yards and 27 touchdowns over four years with Buffalo to begin his NFL career.

Robinson, Jacksonville’s No. 167 overall pick in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL draft, has yet to play a down with the Jaguars after missing the preseason with a toe injury and being placed on injured reserve in August.

Over four seasons of college playing time, his first with Alabama and final three with Texas, Robinson rushed 116 times for 796 yards and eight touchdowns, caught 35 passes for 332 yards and three touchdowns, averaged 23.5 yards per kickoff return and scored two special teams touchdowns.

Doug Pederson confirms Jaguars WR Gabe Davis is out for the season

Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson confirmed on Monday that starting wide receiver Gabe Davis suffered a season-ending knee injury in Jacksonville’s 52-6 loss to the Detroit Lions in Week 11.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Monday morning that Davis is believed to have suffered a meniscus tear against the Lions on Sunday. The extent of the tear had yet to be determined, although Rapoport indicated such knowledge would be gleaned when Davis undergoes surgery.

“He is going to miss the rest of the season. It is confirmed, this morning,” Pederson said. “Gosh, I hate it for him. He’s battled through some injuries this season but he was in good spirits today when I saw him. But he’ll miss the remainder of the year.”

Davis nursed a knee injury throughout the offseason, his first with Jacksonville after spending the first four seasons of his NFL career with the Buffalo Bills, which lingered into the campaign. It paired with Davis hurting his shoulder in the Jaguars’ Week 3 loss to his former team.

Davis, who signed a three-year, $39 million free-agent contract with Jacksonville in March, has caught 20 passes for 239 yards and two touchdowns with the Jaguars. He has logged 163 receptions for 2,730 yards and 27 touchdowns in his career.

Jacksonville has now lost two starting receivers to a season-ending injury this year. Slot receiver Christian Kirk went down with a broken collarbone in the Jaguars’ Week 8 loss to the Green Bay Packers.

Report: Jaguars WR Gabe Davis believed to have suffered meniscus tear

Jaguars starting wide receiver Gabe Davis is believed to have suffered a meniscus tear in Jacksonville’s 52-6 loss to the Detroit Lions in Week 11, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Monday.

Davis is expected to undergo surgery to treat the injury, per Rapoport, although it is currently unclear if a partial or full repair will be necessary. The former would leave the door open for Davis to return to play this season; the latter would likely end his campaign.

Davis signed a three-year, $39 million free-agent contract with the Jaguars this offseason after spending the first four seasons of his NFL career with the Buffalo Bills.

He has played through nagging knee and shoulder injuries in his first season with the Jaguars, having missed only one game but exited multiple through Week 11.

Davis has logged 20 receptions for 239 yards and two touchdowns with Jacksonville, bringing his career totals to 163 catches for 2,730 yards and 27 touchdowns.

Report: Injured Jaguars starting WRs expected to play vs. Vikings

Jaguars injured starting wide receivers Brian Thomas Jr. and Gabe Davis are expected to play Sunday when Jacksonville hosts the Minnesota Vikings, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reported late Saturday night.

Jacksonville listed Thomas (chest) and Davis (shoulder) as questionable to play in Week 10 on the club’s Friday injury report.

Both players experienced their injuries against the Green Bay Packers in Week 8, although Davis had hurt the same shoulder earlier in the season, per Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson.

Thomas managed to play hurt against the Philadelphia Eagles last Sunday in Week 9; Davis did not.

Thomas, Jacksonville’s No. 23 overall pick in the first round of April’s NFL draft, has caught 35 passes for 595 yards and five touchdowns during his explosive rookie campaign, the latter two stats ranking among the top 10 in the NFL this year.

Davis, who signed a three-year, $39 million free-agent contract with Jacksonville in March, has logged 18 receptions for 217 yards and two touchdowns this season.

Thomas and Davis’ availability is welcome news to the Jaguars as they will reportedly be without starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence (shoulder) against the Vikings on Sunday.

Mac Jones will make his first start since being traded to Jacksonville from New England in Lawrence’s place.

Barring any setbacks, the Jaguars expect to have running backs Travis Etienne Jr. (hamstring) and Tank Bigsby (ankle) and wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. (chest) available for Jacksonville’s Week 9 matchup against the Eagles in Philadelphia, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Rapoport called each player ‘likely’ to play Sunday, and added that wide receiver Gabe Davis (shoulder) “appears to be more of a long-shot.”

Bigsby, Thomas and Davis each suffered injuries in Jacksonville’s 30-27 loss to the Green Bay Packers at home last week, while Etienne missed Weeks 7-8 after hurting his hamstring in Week 6 against the Chicago Bears.

Bigsby leads the Jaguars with 493 yards and four touchdowns rushing over 85 attempts this season, with Etienne having compiled 230 yards and two touchdowns over 56 carries.

Thomas, the Jaguars’ first-round rookie sensation, paces Jacksonville with 33 receptions for 573 yards and five touchdowns this year. Davis, who has battled shoulder and knee injuries throughout the campaign, has logged 18 catches for 217 yards and two touchdowns.

Jacksonville running backs Tank Bigsby (ankle) and Travis Etienne Jr. (hamstring) are both likely to play today, barring a setback, Ian Rapoport reports.

Rookie wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. (chest) will be a game-time decision, while veteran passes catcher Gabe Davis (shoulder) is more of a long shot.

Jaguars promote WRs from practice squad for Week 9

With injuries mounting at the position entering their Week 9 matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles, the Jacksonville Jaguars promoted wide receivers Elijah Cooks and Austin Trammell from their practice squad to the active roster via standard elevation on Saturday.

Jacksonville will be without starting slot receiver Christian Kirk for the rest of the season after he broke his collarbone in Week 8.

To pair, fellow starting receivers, Brian Thomas Jr. (chest) and Gabe Davis (shoulder) enter Week 9 questionable, and backup receiver and return specialist Devin Duvernay is currently on the injured reserve.

Cooks joined the Jaguars as an undrafted free agent out of San Jose State in 2023 and secured a spot on the club’s 53-player roster to open the season. He made nine appearances as a rookie and caught three passes for 38 yards.

However, Cooks was relegated to Jacksonville’s practice squad this season. His elevation for Week 9 will mark his first game active with the Jaguars this year.

Tranmell joined the Jaguars this offseason after beginning his career with the Atlanta Falcons in 2021 and spending the last two seasons with the Los Angeles Rams. Like Cooks, he was moved to Jacksonville‘s practice squad in August.

Trammell has logged six receptions for 42 yards and averaged 16.8 yards per kickoff return and 7.3 yards per punt return over 24 career appearances.
