Nebraska countdown to kickoff profile: No. 91 Freedom Akinmoladun

The countdown to kickoff for the Nebraska Cornhuskers’ 2024 season is down to 91 days.

The countdown to Nebraska’s 2024 season is down to 91 days, however, the 2024 Cornhuskers roster does not feature a No. 91. With that, Cornhuskers Wire takes a look back in time at the career of former Huskers defensive end Freedom Akinmoladun.

Akinmoladun originally signed with the Huskers as part of their 2014 recruiting class. The Grandview, Missouri native was actually a three-star tight end prospect coming out of Grandview High School. He ultimately chose the Huskers over offers from Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, and Kansas State.

After spending his true freshman season at tight end in 2014, Akinmoladun made the move to defensive end ahead of the 2015 season. It was a move that paid off quickly for him, playing in 11 games that season including four starts. He would finish the season with 21 tackles, seven tackles for loss, and 4.5 sacks, both among the best for all Huskers defenders that season.

In 2016, the Missouri native became a full-time starter for the Huskers, playing in all 13 games. He recorded a career high 32 tackles in the process including five tackles for a loss and picked up an additional four sacks. He also picked up a team leading 10 quarterback hurries.

After starting in all 13 games as a redshirt sophomore, Akinmoladun would start in each of the next 24 games for the Huskers in his redshirt junior and senior seasons in 2017 and 2018, and finished his career on a streak of 37 career starts. In those two seasons, he combined for 53 total tackles, five tackles for loss, and 2.5 sacks.

After completing his career with the Huskers, Akinmoladun enjoyed a brief stint in the NFL, appearing in five games over three seasons, spending time with both the Cincinnati Bengals and New York Jets. He recorded four tackles across those five games.

Every Husker on a United Football League roster

The start of the spring season of professional football is right around the corner.

The start of the spring season of professional football is right around the corner. The United Football League will kick off its inaugural season in 2024.

The professional football league results from a merger between XFL and the United States Football League. This version of the UFL is not connected to the United Football League, which played from 2009 to 2012.

The modern UFL will feature eight teams with two divisions, the XFL Division and the USFL Division. Nebraska will be represented on five of the league’s eight rosters.

St. Louis Battlehawks DL Freedom Akinmoladun invited to tryout for Chiefs

The #Chiefs are taking a look at the XFL talent pool as they’re set to host a St. Louis Battlehawks defensive lineman for a tryout.

The Kansas City Chiefs are taking a look at what the XFL has to offer.

According to the XFL’s official Twitter account, the Chiefs have invited St. Louis Battlehawks DL Freedom Akinmoladun for a tryout. This is the first player from the XFL that has reportedly been brought into Kansas City for a tryout.

An undrafted free agent out of Nebraska in 2019, Akinmoladun is a Grandview, Missouri native who played at Grandview High School. He started his collegiate career as a tight end before switching to play defensive line for the Corn Huskers. He played three seasons in the NFL (2019-2021), spending time with each the New York Giants, New York Jets, Tennessee Titans and Cincinnati Bengals. He appeared in just five total NFL games, recording two tackles.

The 6-foot-4 and 286-pound defender appeared in 10 games with the St. Louis Battlehawks in the XFL during their inaugural season back under new management. The 27-year-old recorded 14 total tackles and one sack in 56 snaps on the year.

In addition to the Chiefs, Akinmoladun has also been invited to Miami Dolphins rookie minicamp.

Dolphins invite XFL DE to minicamp

He played 10 games for the Battlehawks this season.

The Miami Dolphins added four players over the course of the 2023 NFL draft as well as over 20 undrafted free agents after the three-day event concluded.

Now, Miami’s focus turns to their offseason program, with rookie minicamp just around the corner. The Dolphins have invited a few players that we know about to the minicamp, including Harvard running back Aidan Borguet, Wyoming offensive lineman Eric Abojei and Duke cornerback Datrone Young.

The most recent reported player to receive an invite isn’t coming from the collegiate game but actually from the XFL. According to KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson, St. Louis Battlehawks defensive end Freedom Akinmoladun has been asked to join.

Akinmoladun appeared in 10 games for the Battlehawks this year, recording 14 tackles and one sack.

Prior to his XFL experience, he spent a season in the USFL and parts of three seasons in the NFL, with the New York Giants, Cincinnati Bengals, Tennesee Titans and New York Jets.

He’s appeared in five NFL games just four tackles.

With Miami’s depth on the defensive line and edge, Akinmoladun would really have to impress Mike McDaniel and Vic Fangio during this minicamp to earn a contract.

Titans claim DL Freedom Akinmoladun off waivers

The Titans added another defensive lineman to their roster on Monday.

The Tennessee Titans put in a successful waiver claim for former Cincinnati Bengals defensive lineman Freedom Akinmoladun, the team announced on Monday.

Originally an undrafted free agent signing of the New York Giants in 2019 out of Nebraska, Akinmoladun has spent the last two seasons with the Bengals, appearing in four games.

The 6-foot-3, 284-pounder has played a total of 26 snaps on defense and six on special teams, recording two tackles. He played predominantly at defensive end in college.

The 25-year-old will now join the competition for one of the depth spots on Tennessee’s defensive line, although he’s a major longshot after joining the team so late in training camp.

Tennessee will have to trim its roster down to 80 players on Tuesday. The addition of Akinmoladun gives them 81 ahead of that deadline.

After Tuesday’s cutdown day, the Titans will have one more coming on Aug. 31, when the roster will be trimmed to its final 53. That will come just days after Tennessee faces the Chicago Bears in the preseason finale on Saturday.
