Alabama football has officially announced the addition of former Crimson Tide line backer from 2002-05, Freddie Roach.

Roach has been hired as the defensive line coach, a position he held in 2019 with Alabama’s in-conference rival, Ole Miss.

Alabama Head Coach Nick Saban made an official statement regarding the hire of Roach:

“We are pleased and happy to have Freddie Roach return to our staff at The University of Alabama,” Saban said. “Freddie did a fantastic job at Ole Miss the last three years coaching their defensive line and we are excited to welcome him back to Tuscaloosa. Freddie played here and has been a part of our staff on a couple of occasions. He brings a tremendous understanding of what we do on defense, how we run our program while proving to an outstanding recruiter.”

Roach also had kind words about the university and the opportunity in an official statement:

“It is hard to even put into words how exciting it is to come back to The University of Alabama,” Roach said. “This is a fantastic opportunity to return home and work for Coach Saban and my alma mater. I have a great deal of respect for Coach and his accomplishments as well as the rich history of Alabama football. I also understand the high expectations of both Coach Saban and the program. I am looking forward to helping continue that history of success.”

This news doesn’t come as a surprise to most as he had already been seen on the recruiting trail alongside Saban.

Former Alabama LB turned coached falls short of Super Bowl win

Former Alabama linebacker DeMeco Ryans, who was a member of the Crimson Tide from 2002-2005, fell just short of winning a Super Bowl ring as the San Francisco 49ers inside linebacker coach.

Ryans was the 2005 SEC defensive player of the year at Alabama and had even more success in the NFL, where he won the 2006 NFL Defensive Player of the year Award and was named to two Pro Bowls.

After a nine-year career in the NFL, Ryans joined the 49ers coaching staff in 2017 and has helped build the defense to it’s elite reputation it has today.

His high performance as a coach could mean that he’d like to rise up the ranks and receive a promotion.

Well, maybe he should take a page out of his former teammate’s, Freddie Roach, book and rejoin Alabama as a coach.

Roach recently joined the Alabama staff in the 2020 college football offseason and has already hit the recruiting trail.

If Ryans looks to go all the way and win a championship ring, he should join Saban and Roach at Alabama.

REPORT: Freddie Roach to join Alabama staff as DL coach

Roll Tide Wire has learned that the Alabama Crimson Tide looks to be adding Freddie Roach to the coaching staff at Alabama.

Roll Tide Wire has learned that the Alabama Crimson Tide looks to be adding Freddie Roach to the coaching staff at Alabama.

It should also be noted that those at BamaInsider are reporting that news as well.

Roach, who is currently serving as the defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator at Ole Miss, has been a part of the Crimson Tide staff before.

From 2015-2016, Roach was the director of player development. Before that from 2008-2010, Roach was an assistant strength and conditioning coach.

This time around, Roach will more than likely be the new defensive line coach, replacing Brian Baker, who will be moved to an off the field role.

Roach played linebacker at Alabama from 2002-2005 racked up over 3,000 career rushing yards, had over 500 career tackles and 11 blocked kicks.

Freddie Roach passes on Giants, re-joins Ole Miss instead

Freddie Roach will not join the New York Giants as their defensive line coach, instead choosing to return to Ole Miss.

Late last week, it was reported that the New York Giants intended to hire Freddie Roach as their next defensive line coach. However, Roach apparently had a change of heart.

Ole Miss announced late on Friday night that Roach had opted to pass on the Giants, instead returning to their program in 2020 and potentially beyond.

A little background on roach, as were published previously:

Roach began his career at Alabama as a strength and conditioning coordinator from 2008-2010. In 2011, he joined East Mississippi Community College of “Last Chance U” fame as a defensive line coach/strength and conditioning coordinator.

In 2012, Roach coached the defensive line at Murray State before moving onto South Alabama from 2013-2014, overseeing the linebackers and defensive ends during that tenure. It was back to Alabama from 2015-2016, where he served as Director of Player Development before joining Ole Miss in 2017 as their defensive line coach.

During his time at Alabama, Roach crossed paths with both defensive lineman Dalvin Tomlinson and, more obviously, head coach Joe Judge.

Roach would have been an interesting and potentially solid addition for Joe Judge, but it’s back to the drawing board in this instance.

Giants to hire Freddie Roach: 3 things to know

The New York Giants are expected to hire defensive line coach Freddie Roach, so here are a few things to know.

New York Giants head coach Joe Judge has added several names to his staff in recent days, which includes incoming defensive line coach Freddie Roach.

As an NFL newcomer, there is little known about Roach at the professional level, but his resume certainly is interesting.

Here’s a look at said resume and a few other facts about Roach.

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Worked under Nick Saban, alongside Joe Judge

Let’s begin with the obvious… Roach started his career at Alabama as a strength and conditioning coordinator and spent a good chunk of his time in college with the Crimson Tide over two stints. He also played for Alabama prior to that.

During that time, Roach worked under legendary head coach Nick Saban and alongside current Giants head coach Joe Judge.

From 2009-2010, while Roach was serving his the strength and conditioning role, Judge was an assistant special teams coach.

Report: Giants to hire assistants Jerry Schuplinski, Freddie Roach

The New York Giants are expected to hire QB coach Jerry Schuplinski and defensive line coach Freddie Roach.

New York Giants head coach Joe Judge continued to fill out his staff on Monday, reportedly hiring two more assistants in quarterbacks coach Jerry Schuplinski and defensive line coach Freddie Roach.

Schuplinski, a three-time Super Bowl champion as a member of the New England Patriots, spent the past year-plus serving as the assistant quarterbacks coach of the Miami Dolphins. That’s the same title he held with the Patriots from 2016-2018, having previously served as an offensive assistant (2013-2015).

Prior to his time in the NFL, Schuplinski was a special teams coordinator and linebackers coach for Case Western Reserve (intercollegiate football in Cleveland, Ohio), the head coach at Trinity High School in Garfield Heights, Ohio and a graduate assistant at John Carroll University.
