Frankie Fidler is one for the camera with this funny exchange during MSU’s exhibition

On Tuesday, Michigan State basketball hosted Ferris State for their final exhibition matchup of the offseason before the team heads into the 2024-25 season.

During that game between the Spartans and Bulldogs, Spartans wing Frankie Fidler had a nice drive leading to an and-one opportunity and the subsequent sequence was one fans can definitely laugh at.

Michigan State basketball forward named to Julius Erving Award watchlist

One Wednesday, less than a week from the start of the regular season, a Michigan State basketball forward was named to a prestigious watch list. Incoming transfer Frankie Fidler was named to the Julius Erving Award watch list, which honors the top small forward in college basketball.

A few weeks ago, Tom Izzo said that Fidler, who transferred in from Omaha, has been his most consistent player this offseason.

Tom Izzo identifies the player that has been most consistent for Michigan State basketball this summer

Tom Izzo said this player has been his most consistent over the summer

In his weekly press conference on Thursday, Tom Izzo identified one player that, according to Chris Solari of the Detroit Free Press, he said has been his ‘most consistent, most efficient’ player over the summer.

That player is Omaha transfer Frankie Fidler.

Fidler was brought in for his efficient offense, something this team has been missing these last few years on the wing, so it’s a great sign that Fidler has stood out to his coach this summer.

Frankie Fidler discusses transfer choice of Michigan State over Wisconsin

Frankie Fidler discusses choosing Michigan State over the Badgers

Wisconsin basketball’s offseason looked much different at the start of April when it was in strong pursuit of top-ranked transfer forward Frankie Fidler.

The plan: Land the Omaha transfer forward to re-create the wing production lost with the departure of A.J. Storr. A starting five of Chucky Hepburn, Max Klesmit, John Blackwell, Frankie Fidler and Steven Crowl would do well to bounce back from a disappointing finish to the 2023-24 season.

Well, plans changed. Wisconsin point guard Chucky Hepburn entered the transfer portal on April 18, removing any chance the Badgers had at landing Fidler, his good friend and former high school teammate.

Fidler committed to Tom Izzo and Michigan State a few days later.

The top-ranked transfer recently joined “The Spiro Avenue Show” and discussed the timeline of his commitment and eventual transfer decision:

Here is the quote that Badgers fans would be interested in:

“One of my best friends, Chucky Hepburn, was at Wisconsin at the time, and I really wanted to play with him,” Fidler said. “So,  think that connection had me leaning toward Wisconsin. But after my visit (to Michigan State), it really blew me out of the water, and I really enjoyed my time here.”

Fidler had received transfer predictions to choose Wisconsin after that visit. The Badgers were the heavy favorite when Hepburn was still on the roster.

We previously broke down the timeline of events with Fidler’s visit to Wisconsin, his delayed commitment announcement, Hepburn’s departure from Wisconsin and the Omaha transfer’s commitment to Michigan State.

Hepburn’s status remains the biggest variable in what became an unfortunate week for Greg Gard and the Badgers.

Michigan State basketball transfer SF Frankie Fidler officially withdraws from the NBA draft

Michigan State transfer SF Frankie Fidler officially withdraws from the NBA draft

Michigan State basketball’s biggest victory of the offseason was landing Omaha transfer small forward Frankie Fidler. However, it wasn’t 100-percent confirmed that Fidler would ever play a game for the Spartans, as he was technically still in the NBA draft process, but still maintained his eligibility.

On Tuesday, Fidler officially removed his name from the draft, making it 100-percent official that he will play in the green and white this year.

Take a deep breath, Spartan fans.
