Report: Boston Celtics interested in Frank Vogel, Terry Stotts as assistant coaching targets

There is reportedly internal skepticism Boston can convince either to serve under interim head coach Joe Mazzulla, however.

The Boston Celtics reportedly have their eye on a pair of former NBA head coaches to help guide interim head coach Joe Mazzulla through a season in which the Celtics are hoping to contend for a title, according to recent reporting from Substack’s Marc Stein. In the wake of head coach Ime Udoka’s suspension, the team has been inquiring after potential additions to Boston’s bench.

Per Stein’s most recent newsletter, “the Celts are … interested in two of the top available former head coaches — Frank Vogel and Terry Stotts — but pessimistic about their chances of luring either to usher the unproven Mazzulla through this massive step up onto the big stage.”

After striking out with former Boston and current Los Angeles Clippers assistant coach Jay Larranaga, the Celtics may hope to land a high-profile assistant with head coaching experience.

But, at this time of the NBA calendar year, such candidates are typically difficult to find unemployed.

Report: Celtics could tap Frank Vogel for assistant role amid Udoka scandal

If or when the Celtics make a coaching change, former Lakers HC Frank Vogel could be brought in as an assistant.

The Boston Celtics are reportedly set to name assistant Joe Mazzulla as interim head coach following the impending suspension of current head coach Ime Udoka. According to multiple sources, Udoka was engaged in a consensual relationship with a female staffer and could be suspended for the entire ’22-23 season as a result.

Mazzulla has been with the club since 2019 but is just 34 years old. Likewise, many of the current Celtics assistant coaches are either on the younger side or lack experience. Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix is reporting Boston could reach out to former head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers Frank Vogel.

Vogel won a title with LA back in 2020 and has served as a head coach for competitive teams in Orlando and Indiana as well. Lifetime he has a .526 winning percentage as a head coach in the NBA.

Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens has a long relationship with Vogel. The two first met when Stevens was serving as the coach of the Butler Bulldogs in Indiana. That friendship has last until this day.

Heavy Sports NBA insider Steve Bulpett says the likelihood of Anthony staying put could rest with coach Darvin Ham. The team has made an effort to get younger this offseason, but Ham could seek some veteran stability on the back end of the rotation. “I think he’s one of the guys who will be one of the last pieces to be decided,” Bulpett said in a video interview. “When teams finish making or finding out what moves they can or, maybe more important, cannot make this summer, and they are getting ready for the season, it’s, ‘OK, this is what our roster looks like.’ There’s a player out here, but does he fit with what you’re trying to do? I think it’s going to take a while for Carmelo, unless Darvin Ham says, ‘Yes, I see a role for this guy and I want him.’ At this point, Carmelo is coming in at a reasonable number. -via Heavy.com / July 27, 2022

There are few givens in the NBA, so I would hesitate to label it as such. But all indications are that the Lakers are Irving’s top destination if he leaves Brooklyn, whether it’s via a trade between now and the February 2023 trade deadline, or in free agency next summer, when Westbrook’s salary will be off the Lakers’ books. -via The Athletic / August 3, 2022
Juan Toscano-Anderson has the projected edge over Stanley Johnson, but that could change in training camp, according to league sources. With the fifth spot, Westbrook may have the advantage considering his status, but he may end up rotating with Troy Brown, Kendrick Nunn or Lonnie Walker, depending on how they’re shooting that night. -via The Athletic / August 3, 2022

If Utah ends up interviewing more than …

If Utah ends up interviewing more than 20 candidates for its coaching vacancy, no one in the coaching community will be surprised. Jazz CEO Danny Ainge loves intel and will surely amass plenty by the time Utah names its successor to Quin Snyder. Utah’s only known candidates with NBA head coaching experience on a list already in the teens are Terry Stotts and Frank Vogel.

Frank Vogel is a candidate for Utah Jazz head coaching job

Former Lakers head coach Frank Vogel will interview for the head coaching job the Utah Jazz have.

The Los Angeles Lakers may have fired Frank Vogel a couple of months ago, but by no means is his NBA head coaching career over.

He was with the Purple and Gold for three seasons starting in the 2019-20 campaign, and he coached the team to the NBA championship in that first season.

Last season, he had the Lakers gliding high until injuries to LeBron James and Anthony Davis torpedoed their hopes for back-to-back titles.

Still, Vogel was able to get them to finish first in defensive rating.

It appears he still has a good shot at being on the bench for another team come October.

Via Lakers Daily:

“Former Los Angeles Lakers head coach Frank Vogel reportedly is expected to interview for the Utah Jazz coaching vacancy.

“Vogel and Jazz assistant Lamar Skeeter are two of the candidates that will interview for the position. The Jazz are looking to replace Quin Snyder, who stepped down from the position.”

At least for now, the Jazz possess two high-level talents in center Rudy Gobert, who is seemingly always a candidate for the Defensive Player of the Year award, and scoring dynamo Donovan Mitchell.

There are rumors that one or both of them could be on the move, but if that doesn’t happen, Utah should still have a very good roster next season.

It was just a year ago that the Jazz finished first in the Western Conference while finishing in the top four in both offensive and defensive rating.

Clearly, Vogel is still a good coach, despite what transpired with the Lakers this season, and he deserves a shot to continue being an NBA head coach.

Jake Fischer on Quin Snyder: I was told that the first contract overtures, if you will, came sometime before the season started, or in the beginning of the season in the late fall, or late offseason or early fall, late offseason. And then there were multiple other frameworks, structures, whatever you want to call it that were presented to Quinn, and he just repeatedly always declined. -via Spotify / June 8, 2022
There are questions around the league about whether Jazz CEO of basketball operations Danny Ainge will be amenable to catering to Mitchell and his representation. But if Mitchell and Jazz chairman Ryan Smith are aligned on Bryant, or any other candidate, league sources with knowledge of the situation don’t expect Ainge to stand in the way. Ainge is not known to be someone who scours the market of the NBA’s up-and-coming head coaches. -via Bleacher Report / June 7, 2022
