The Top 30 players at the Olympic basketball tournament

HoopsHype ranks the Top 25 basketball players at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, based on perceived FIBA value.

We go from the NBA Finals almost immediately to Olympic basketball in basically no time at all.

There are quite a few star-level absences from global lineups this year (there will only be seven All-Stars and just three players who made All-NBA this year participating), but there’s still quite a good amount of talent competing in the Games for basketball this summer, perhaps even more than many were expecting due to the quick turnaround from the NBA season to the Olympics.

So we decided to rank the Top 30 players competing at the Tokyo Olympic basketball tournament.

Before we get started, we wanted to make clear that we factored in perceived FIBA value a bit into the ranking, which will explain why some guys who are role players in the NBA but stars in international competitions are ranked where they are.

Let’s get into it.

This Switzerland fan turned into the best meme after his team’s game-tying goal in Euro 2020

The duality of sports fandom, now in meme form.

Euro 2020 has been a rollercoaster of emotions for soccer fans over the last few weeks. We’ve seen shocking ties between rivals and embarrassing own-goals, but maybe nothing will compare to what Switzerland just did to their fans.

On Monday, during the first knockout rounds of Euro 2020, Switzerland was down 3-1 after the 75th minute on Paul Pogba’s goal in the second half. Facing down elimination, Switzerland was able to get within one on Haris Seferovic’s second of the game at 81 minutes, then the team was able to tie the game 3-3 just before the 90th minute to get to extra time.

It’s an incredible comeback for the Swiss in one of the best matches of the tournament we’ve seen yet.

That brings us to this one Swiss fan who has now captured the heart of soccer fans everywhere, as he was originally shown on the broadcast in the final minute of play in clear agony and heartbreak at the team’s likely loss. Then, after Switzerland’s tying goal, the broadcast panned back to the fan, who was suddenly shirtless and screaming in absolute joy.

It’s an incredible showcase of the duality of sports, captured just mere minutes apart.

Of course, as always, Twitter had a blast turning this fan into a new meme.

Draft Rewind: Warriors select France’s Mickaël Piétrus in 2003 first round

In the first round of the 2003 NBA Draft, the Golden State Warriors selected France’s Mickaël Piétrus with the No. 11 overall pick.

While 22 teams prepare for the restart of the NBA season, the Golden State Warriors are one of eight teams on the outside of the Orlando Bubble. With the Warriors season officially over, it’s time to turn the page to draft season in Golden State. Their league-worst 15-50 record has locked the Warriors into a top-five selection in the 2020 Draft.

With months on the calendar until October’s draft day, Warriors Wire is rewinding through Golden State’s draft history to highlight some of the most memorable selections — trades, surprises, busts, sleepers and everything in between.

In a storied class that has grown into draft day lore, the Golden State Warriors were owners of the No. 11 overall pick.

June 26, 2003

The Cleveland Cavaliers opened the 2003 edition of the NBA Draft, selecting LeBron James out of St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron, Ohio. Future NBA All-Stars Carmelo Anthony, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade all went off the board in the top five selections.

The Warriors were on the clock outside of the top 10 picks. With the No. 11 overall selection, Golden State general manager Garry St. Jean selected French prospect Mickaël Piétrus.

Before coming to the NBA, Piétrus spent 1999-2003 playing for Élan Béarnais in France’s Pro A league.

In his first season with the Warriors, Piétrus played 53 games, starting in 22 contests. As a rookie, Piétrus averaged 5.3 points, 2.2 rebounds, 0.6 steals and 0.5 assists per game. Before joining the Orlando Magic in 2009, Piétrus played five seasons in the Bay Area.

Piétrus served a role in Golden State’s prized “We Believe” season in 2006-07. The French forward started in 38 games, averaging 11.1 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. Piétrus played in all 11 games of Golden State’s playoff run, averaging 19 minutes per contest.

Pietrus capped off his 10-year NBA career in 2013 with the Toronto Raptors.

Outside of James, Bosh and Wade, other notable players from the 2003 draft include Central Michigan’s Chris Kaman, Xavier’s David West, Georgia’s Zaza Pachulia and Creighton’s Kyle Korver.

NBA Draft prospect Killian Hayes set to interview with the Golden State Warriors

According to his agent Yann Balizoukou, NBA draft prospect Killian Hayes is set to meet with the Golden State Warriors.

As 22 teams prepare for the restart of the NBA season in the Orlando bubble, the Golden State Warriors’ calendar is open. With their run officially over due to their league-worst 15-50 record, Steve Kerr and Bob Myers can use their time to study for October’s NBA Draft.

As the Golden State Warriors prepare to make a selection in the top-five for the first time since 2002, prospects from across the 2020 draft class are beginning to set up meetings with the Warriors.

According to Anthony Slater of The Athletic, the Warriors have met with top prospects LaMelo Ball and James Wiseman in the draft process. Next up, french prospect Killian Hayes.

Hayes’ agent Yann Balizoukou recently joined the french basketball podcast Evergure. During his appearance, Balizoukou mentioned his client would be interviewing with the Golden State Warriors.

Via Evergure (H/T NBC Sports Bay Area):

He hasn’t done Minnesota’s interview but he will. Same thing for Golden State. He won’t do Cleveland, for sure. It’s no secret they are not interested in a guard, so I spoke with them and the chances they draft a guard are really slim. Killian should interview with Minnesota and Golden State, though.

Listen to the full interview with Balikouzou on YouTube:

In 10 games for ratiopharm Ulm in Germany, the 18-year-old guard averaged 12.8 points, 6.2 assists, 2.3 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game. On 4.1 attempts from beyond the arc per contest, Hayes shot 39% from deep in the EuroCup.

Hayes’ long list of intriguing traits earned him the No. 5 ranking in the Warriors Wire July Big Board. The young point guard came in behind only Georgia’s Anthony Edwards, Ball, Wiseman, and USC big man Onyeka Okongwu.

Via the Warriors Wire Big Board:

Hayes has a killer step-back, is an inventive passer who has great timing and can maneuver his body in subtle ways to get better passer lanes to his target. While comparisons to D’Angelo Russell remind Warriors fans that Golden State did not think Russell’s playstyle fit on the team, a rookie on an inexpensive contract won’t demand the ball like an All-Star rightfully can. If there’s a similarity in skill set, that should be welcome.

As draft season begins to heat up, a flurry of top prospects will begin to make their way through the Bay Area before the Golden State Warriors are officially on the clock in October.

ASVEL Villeurbanne president Tony …

ASVEL Villeurbanne president Tony Parker said that promoting T.J. Parker, his brother, to the head coach position was an “obvious” decision towards his goal to keep the club’s French identity and preserve a certain level of continuity. “This new coaching staff is an obvious choice for us,” Parker said in a press conference held in Astroballe arena, Tuesday (23/6), per ASVEL. “Our wish was to remain a 100% French club and work in continuity. T.J. [Parker] has been at the club for eight years and now it’s a good time to give him a chance. Now we have to bring trophies. Our coaching staff is very comprehensive and of a very good standard for France. Frederic Fauthoux can bring a lot to T.J. with his experience and that can make a difference.”
