Friday Night Notes: 5-stars visiting Michigan, Colorado’s QB targets, plus more

The lead in the 2024 recruiting cycle changed hands again this week.

USA TODAY High School Sports‘ Friday Night Notes is a weekly high school recruiting recap that looks at the latest news from around the country—from the Class of 2023 to ’24 and beyond.

The lead in the 2024 recruiting cycle changed hands again this week. Michigan had been on top, but the recent arrival of QB1 Dylan Raiola, plus a few more three- and four-star commitments this past week, put Georgia at No. 1 nationally.

Going by the 247Sports composite rankings, the Bulldogs’ class of 2024 is now at 270.65 points, more than 20 points ahead of the second-ranked Wolverines (250.12). It will take a lot of work to recover that lead for Jim Harbaugh and the rest of his program. Adding a couple of blue-chip prospects would certainly make a difference, though.

On that score, help may soon be on the way.

According to Wolverines Wire Trent Knoop, Justin Scott will be visiting Ann Arbor on June 9. The composite rankings have Scott (6-foot-4, 310 pounds) as the No. 1 overall prospect in the state of Illinois, plus No. 3 at his position and No. 12 nationally in the class of 2024.

Scott has offers from 29 other programs and will also be visiting Georgia, Miami, and Ohio State next month. On3’s prediction model currently has Miami as the favorite to get his commitment at 69.8%, followed by Notre Dame at 20.2%, then Georgia at 6.3%. Michigan is at less than 1%.

Scott won’t be the only five-star recruit in Ann Arbor that weekend, though.

According to On3 Recruits, Saint Louis University (Mo.) five-star wide receiver Ryan Wingo will also be in town for an official visit on June 9. Wingo (6-foot-2, 205 pounds) is ranked second overall in Missouri, fifth among wide receivers and No. 21 nationally in the 2024 class.

Wingo also has offers from 41 other programs, though. The list of contenders that are considered warm to get his commitment include GeorgiaMichigan, Missouri, TexasAlabamaClemson, Miami, OregonTennessee and Texas A&M.

4-star WR Kwazi Gilmer puts Michigan State football in top six

A 4-star California WR has named MSU in his top six

Kwazi Gilmer has made the decision to cut his recruitment down to just six schools and the Spartans have made the cut.

Gilmer is a 6’2″ wide receiver that is from Chatsworth, California, attending Sierra Canyon High School. He currently ranks as the No. 290 overall player and the No. 43 wide receiver in the 2024 recruiting class according to the 247Sports composite rankings.

The Spartans were featured alongside Oklahoma, UCLA, Stanford, Cal and Washington.

Dooley’s Dozen: Florida football’s 12 best 3-star recruits in last 10 years

Pat Dooley looks back at a decade that saw a lot of three-star recruits outperform their expectations.

Let me start with a caveat here – nobody is saying that a college football team at the SEC level should be building a team with three-star recruits.

We just know that you can’t dismiss them.

Florida’s latest class only has two of them, although the haul in the transfer portal is full of them.

But that’s the key, seeing in a player what the recruiting services don’t see and developing that talent.

You’d still rather be able to recruit like Alabama, but first, you have to win more than six games a year. It’s a chicken/egg thing.

Anyway, that’s a long way to get to the point of this Dooley’s Dozen, the 12 best Florida players in the last 10 recruiting classes (not including this one) who were three-stars that Florida was able to develop into guys playing with five-star ability.

Sunshine State talent among ESPN’s list of top 5 recruiting states

The Sunshine State stands out among the best when it comes to producing top football talent.

It’s often said that Florida is one of the most talent-rich states in the country. ESPN’s Billy Tucker tends to agree. In a recent ESPN article ranking the top five best states for college football recruiting, Florida takes the top spot, coming in at No. 1 over Texas (No. 2). The rest of the top five includes Georgia (No. 3), California (No. 4), and Alabama (No. 5).

In his piece, Tucker explains his criteria for determining the most talent-rich state in the nation. Among other factors, Tucker cites Florida as having the most ESPN 300 prospect in the 2023 class with 61. Over the past five seasons, the Sunshine State has produced 234 ESPN 300 prospects, the most of any state in the country.

He also highlights the programs that have had the most success recruiting in the state of Florida. SEC East rival Georgia is listed as the out-of-state program with the most success. The Bulldogs had nine players from their 2023 championship roster with roots in Florida, including defensive tackle Jalen Carter.

Despite the recent emphasis, and relative success, [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] has had on winning recruiting battles in the state, Tucker opted to go with Miami as the in-state program that has been most successful with recruiting in the backyard. Mario Cristobal may have had a rough first season on the field, but his No. 5 ranked 2023 recruiting class had 12 of its 15 ESPN 300 recruits come from Florida.

It’s safe to say that if Napier and his staff want to achieve success at the highest levels of college football, they’re going to need to stay the course and continue emphasizing the state of Florida in their recruiting strategy.

Top five 2024 prospects who could get offers this season from USC football

There’s a lot to consider when USC maps out and develops its 2024 recruiting strategy and prepares for life in the Big Ten.

The USC Trojan football squad currently has commits in the 2024 class from Oregon-based tight end Joey Olsen and California-based wide receiver Jason Robinson.

Look for Lincoln Riley and USC to add more recruits to the class over the next few weeks. The Trojans’ coaching staff returned to the recruiting trail earlier this month and has been active all over the country. National signing day is arriving for the 2023 class, but as we know, the early signing period in December is now the point on the calendar when the majority of the recruiting class for the subsequent season enters a program’s doors. It’s certainly not too early to look at the big picture for 2024 and what is to come in the next recruiting cycle.

Here are a few names USC can add to the wish list of players for the 2024 class who have gone under the radar to this point:

2024 four-star linebacker Brayden Platt gets USC offer

This particular recruit would offer positional versatility to the Trojans.

USC is stacking up the 2024 offers, espically at the linebacker position. The newest offer comes to four-star Yelm (Washington) prospect Brayden Platt.

The Washington native holds many early offers, including Arizona, Arizona State, Notre Dame, Washington, Washington State, Utah, Oklahoma, Oregon and Michigan among others.

Yelm went 14-0 this past fall, winning a state title in Washington. Platt led the team with 41 total tackles and five tackles for a loss (one sack) in seven registered games. Platt also led the team in rushing with 765 yards and 18 TDs in seven games. He also recorded eight receptions for 160 yards and a TD.

The 6-foot-2, 240-pound Platt is rated the No. 277 overall prospect and the No. 22 linebacker in the 247Sports Composite. He is much higher in the 247Sports rankings at No. 78 overall and the No. 9 linebacker.

Platt also won a state title in the shot put for track and field and could very well end up playing running back at the next level as well.

Zion Taylor includes Michigan State football in top six

MSU has made the top six for a Texas edge prospect in the 2024 recruiting class:

Michigan State has found themselves inside of the top six for Zion Taylor, an edge prospect in the 2024 recruiting class. Taylor, a native of Pearland, Texas, attends Shadow Creek High School. He is a 3-star prospect.

Taylor is familiar with MSU’s pass rush specialist Brandon Jordan, and has been on the Spartans radar since Mel Tucker hired Jordan.

Michigan State is inside the top six alongside Arkansas, Cal, Kansas, Tulane and Houston.

Dooley’s Dozen: Looking back at Florida’s 5-star recruits since Urban Meyer

Pat Dooley looks back at all of Florida’s 5-star recruits since the end of the Urban Meyer era.

Do you remember the old days Florida used to sign five-star recruits as if the Gators were shopping at a convenience store?

Those were the days of [autotag]Steve Spurrier[/autotag], [autotag]Ron Zook[/autotag] and [autotag]Urban Meyer[/autotag], the two-time national titlist who used to text recruits while he was in church.

During that stretch of those three coaches (and you have to include the Zooker because he set Meyer up with the talent to win it all in 2006), Florida won 78.7% of its games.

Since then, Florida has won 55.3% of its games and fired three coaches.

Coincidence? We think not.

The latest Dooley’s Dozen looks at the last 12 (with a caveat) five-stars who have signed with Florida and how they did at UF. We do that while waiting for [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] to sign his first.

We’re using the 247Sports composite rankings and we’re not counting transfers for this list.
