Mike Norvell discusses LSU’s growth from last year

Mike Norvell offered high praise for Brian Kelly’s LSU team.

Much of the narrative surrounding Florida State and LSU this week is about the rematch aspect.

At his press conference this week, Florida State head coach Mike Norvell was asked what he thinks changed about LSU since they last met.

“That was a good team we played,” Norvell said discussing the game last year, “They ended up growing and gelling together. That’s evidenced in winning the SEC West last year.”

Norvell offered praise for [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag], too, highlighting his dual-threat ability.

“You got to account for him in every way,” Norvell said.

Norvell said he noticed how LSU’s running game improved as 2022 progressed and it’s paired with one of the best receiving corps Florida State will see all year.

Norvell pointed out that [autotag]Harold Perkins[/autotag] didn’t play much in the game last year, but is now one of the most dynamic players in the sport.

[autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] and [autotag]Mike Norvell[/autotag] are no strangers at this point. This will be the fourth straight year they’ve faced. Norvell is looking to even the series. Kelly is 2-1 after winning both games at Notre Dame.

Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit on the call for LSU vs. Florida State

LSU and Florida State will get ESPN’s top crew on Sunday night.

LSU and Florida State will garner ESPN’s top announcing crew on Sunday night.

According to a press release from ESPN, Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit will be on the call with Holly Rowe handling the sideline duties.

Last year, it was Joe Tessitore and Greg McElroy on the call. With the heightened attention around this year’s game, ESPN’s giving it the “big game” treatment.

It’ll be a busy weekend, especially for Herbstreit.

Fowler, Herbstreit, and Rowe will also work the Florida at Utah game on Thursday night. The trio won’t call a game on Saturday, but Herbstreit still has his College Gameday duties.

It’s rare for Fowler and Herbstreit to call an LSU game, but that will change as the SEC’s biggest games begin moving to ABC and ESPN Networks.

The two were on the call last year when LSU beat Alabama.

The game is set for 6:30 p.m. CT on ABC.

LSU vs. Florida State odds stays put in Wednesday update

The Tigers remain a 2.5-point favorite in Sunday night’s season-opener.

LSU opens with arguably the best game on the entire Week 1 college football slate when the Tigers travel to New Orleans looking to avenge last year’s loss to Florida State.

In a battle between top-10 teams that could have playoff implications, LSU opened as a slight favorite, albeit by less than a field goal per BetMGM. As of Noon CT on Wednesday, that line has not moved an inch as the Tigers are still favored by 2.5 points.

The two teams faced in New Orleans to kick off the season in 2022, a game Florida State won thanks to a blocked extra point in the final seconds. Both teams went on to have surprisingly successful seasons, and they look to take the next steps this fall.

Five things to know about Florida State entering Week 1 contest in Orlando

Here are five things to know about Florida State before it faces LSU on Sunday night.

LSU and Florida State are getting set to face each in what should be the game of the week.

It’s the only top 10 matchup on the slate and there’s narrative juice too after the thriller in New Orleans last year.

Both programs are hoping 10-win seasons in 2022 can catapult them into playoff contention this year. Both fanbases expect it.

Norvell is entering his fourth-year in Tallahassee. The former Memphis coach finally got it rolling after a couple down years.

You’re probably familiar with this program due to the game last year, but here are five things you should know about Florida State.

Week 1 Preview: ACC Games to watch

College Sports Wire looks at four ACC games to watch in week one

Like most of the college football world, the Atlantic Coast Conference will kickoff its 2023 season  this upcoming weekend including a pair of conference matchups.

Last fall, the Clemson Tigers won their seventh ACC championship in the last eight years, defeating North Carolina 39-10. This fall, Florida State, North Carolina, and others will all vying to knock the Tigers off their pedestal.

The race for this year’s ACC crown begins with several great matchups this weekend. College Sports Wire offers four matchups to keep an especially close eye between Friday and Monday.

Penn State Week 1 bowl projections: Starting 2023 with New Years Six expectations

The experts seem to agree wiht the bowl projections; Penn State should be heading to a New Years Six bowl game.

Penn State is approaching the start of the new college football season, and it should be a good one for the Nittany Lions. Penn State is a consensus no. 7 preseason team in the polls to start the season and a number of analysts would agree that Penn State should be firmly in the College Football Playoff hunt deep into the season.

With those lofty expectations being placed on them for the 2023 season, it is no surprise that the bowl projections this far out seem to agree that Penn State will be playing in a New Years Six bowl game at the very least at the end of the season. And with a number of bowl projections forecasting both Ohio State and Michigan into the College Football Playoff for a second straight season, that would seem to help Penn State’s bowl outlook as well once again.

We’ll take a look at the bowl projections from various outlets each week this season to see how the bowl projections are impacted by each week’s results. But let’s see where Penn State is starting the year as we go into Week 1. Note that some of these bowl projections have already accounted for Week 0 results, as few as they may have been, and a few are simply the preseason projections without taking into account the Week 0 results.

How LSU is preparing for star Florida State defensive end Jared Verse

LSU will be lining up against one of the nation’s best defensive players on Sunday night.

When LSU takes the field against Florida State in Orlando on Monday night, it will face one of the most imposing defensive players in the entire country on the other side.

Jared Verse was one of the most impactful transfers in 2022 after arriving from Albany. He turned down a potential first-round selection to return to Tallahassee and anchor the FSU defense.

On Monday, [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] discussed how the team is preparing to handle a player of Verse’s caliber.

“You have to game-plan for a player like that,” Kelly said. “So within your offensive structure, you’re thinking about, ‘OK, we’re on the left hash, where’s he… There’s a lot more that goes into just calling a play. You have to be so much more specific.”

Kelly pointed to the changes to college football clock rules, which in Week 0 resulted in a reduction of around five plays per game on average. Kelly said fewer plays in a game makes it all the more important to ensure Verse doesn’t ruin one.

“If you have to be a little bit more specific to find a Jared Verse so he does not ruin a play, then that’s what we’re going to have to do,” Kelly said.

LSU has a more experienced offensive line in 2023, and the Tigers will hope those guys are able to keep Verse from being too disruptive to what [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag] and the offense are trying to do.

Brian Kelly addresses plan against Florida State without Maason Smith

LSU will turn to several depth players to pick up the slack without the suspended Maason Smith, who still isn’t 100%.

LSU will be without one of its top defensive players for the season opener against Florida State as defensive tackle [autotag]Maason Smith[/autotag] will be suspended for receiving improper benefits at an autograph signing in July 2021.

Smith is still recovering from a torn ACL, which was suffered in last year’s season-opener against Florida State. Even had Smith been eligible for the contest, coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] said Monday that he hasn’t been a full participant in practice and still isn’t 100%.

He added that Smith would have been listed as questionable on the injury report this week.

Without Smith in the lineup, LSU will turn to a pair of transfers in [autotag]Jordan Jefferson[/autotag] and [autotag]Jalen Lee[/autotag], as well as redshirt junior [autotag]Jacobian Guillory[/autotag].

“We would love for Maason Smith to be playing in this game, he’s an outstanding football player,” Kelly said. “But we really are pleased with the growth and development of our defensive line. Guys that we haven’t talked a lot about, (West Virginia transfer Jordan) Jefferson has been outstanding in camp, we think he’s physical, plays really strong at the point of attack.

“(Jacobian) Guillory’s been outstanding, first-step quickness, his ability to gain penetration, he’s going to be a handful. And (Florida transfer Jalen) Lee has been one of the surprises… He didn’t have a great spring, he worked harder in the weight room, and he’s done a nice job for us in terms of adding to the depth at that defensive tackle position.”

LSU will hope Smith is back competing at a high level after Week 1, but in the meantime, we’ll get to see some unfamiliar faces line up next to [autotag]Mekhi Wingo[/autotag].

Paul Finebaum thinks LSU could be a letdown in 2023

The Tigers open the season with a big test against Florida State.

It’s officially game week as LSU prepares to start the 2023 season, and coach Brian Kelly’s team enters the campaign with high expectations after last year’s 10-4 finish which saw the Tigers win the SEC West.

Not everyone is high on LSU, however. Asked to name an SEC team that could prove to be a letdown this fall, he sees the Tigers as a possibility there.

“Well, I think LSU is probably the school that could be in that conversation,” Finebaum said on McElroy and Cubelic, per On3. “Because of the schedule. And we may be talking a week from today about what went wrong for them. I think that’s really the only major school in the SEC that will be in that conversation. Two weeks from now, the Alabama conversation comes back or could come back. So I think that’s the danger.”

The Tigers begin the year with a contest against No. 8 Florida State on Sunday night that could ultimately have College Football Playoff implications. LSU will be without star defensive tackle [autotag]Maason Smith[/autotag] for that game due to a suspension, and Finebaum said that could be an impactful injury.

“I really don’t like the ‘one player will not determine the game’ but the Maason Smith situation, I think that has to make them uncomfortable (against Florida State),” Finebaum said. “He’s an impact player and I think he’s the type of player that could play a huge role in that game next Sunday night.

“So I think that’s again, the schedule with Mississippi State and … Ole Miss later on, there’s just a lot of reasons that LSU could be disappointing.”

The schedule certainly has some tough spots, headlined by a trip to Tuscaloosa for a rematch in November. However, the Tigers could do a lot to put Finebaum’s concerns to rest with a Week 1 win over the Seminoles despite Smith being unavailable.
