Leaky Black to set UNC program record on Saturday

Leaky Black will set a UNC basketball program record on Saturday in total games played in a career.

As the regular season winds down on Saturday night, UNC basketball wing [autotag]Leaky Black[/autotag] is set to break an all-time North Carolina program record.

Black, a fifth-year senior, will set the all-time UNC record for games played in a career, passing Deon Thompson.

Thompson had the record with 152 career games played, a record that was held  intact since 2010.

For Black, he tied the record in UNC’s win over Florida State on Monday night and will break the record on Saturday against Duke on Senior Night.

Black has played in at least 30 games in three of the last four seasons for the Tar Heels.

After announcing he would be returning for a fifth season and using his covid year, Black has elevated his game to the next level, having his best season as a Tar Heel.

In 30 games this year, Black is averaging a career-high in points per game (7.4), rebounds per game (6.4) and steals per game (1.3). He is also shooting 33.8 percent from three on a career-high 2.5 attempts per game.

Black had 12 career games with 10+ points in his first four years but this year has totaled seven, including two career-high performances.

UNC Basketball vs. Florida State: Game preview, info, prediction and more

A look at some of the key storylines and info ahead of UNC basketball’s game against Florida State.

The UNC basketball program heads to Florida State for its final road game of the season on Monday night.

This is the first meeting of the season between the two programs. Both are coming off big, emotional wins.

The Tar Heels (18-11, 10-8) head into this game coming off their first Quad 1 win of the season and a signature win for their NCAA Tournament resume against Virginia. On the flip side, Florida State (9-20, 7-11) rallied from 25 points down and outscored Miami by 24 in the second half to win on a buzzer-beater.

While a win will do nothing for UNC’s tournament chances, a loss will surely knock the Tar Heels out of contention.

Florida State upset No. 11 N.C. State thanks to freshman Ta’Niya Latson’s ridiculously awesome performance

We should be paying more attention to Ta’Niya Latson, and Florida State.

Florida State’s women’s basketball team didn’t just squeak past visiting North Carolina State on Thursday night. No, FSU dominated and beat down the 11th ranked team in the country for a 91-72 victory.

Which begs the question: Did we overrate N.C. State, or did we underrate Florida State?

It’s probably a bit of both. But most folks weren’t expecting freshman guard Ta’Niya Latson to be this good – at least not this soon – for Brooke Wyckoff’s FSU team.

Latson had another absolutely stellar game Thursday, tallying her sixth game of the season in which she scored 30 points or more. That’s a program record, by the way, at a school that’s been to 20 NCAA Tournaments.

In all, Latson finished with 31 points on a near pristine 13-of-16 shooting. She swished a pair of 3-pointers, grabbed four rebounds, dished out two assists, and coughed up just a single turnover in 30 minutes of action against the three-time reigning ACC champs.

And according to HerHoopStats, Latson is just the 13th freshman since 2009 to shoot at least 81.2% in a single game while taking a minimum of 15 shots. The company she joins in that group includes the likes of Jessica Shepard, Maddy Siegrist and Elizabeth Kitley – which is to simply say, its pretty good club to be part of.

ESPN tabbed Latson as the 14th best recruit in the 2022 class, several spots behind the likes of UCLA’s Kiki Rice and Stanford’s Lauren Betts. But so far, Latson has just a good of a case as anyone to win the Tamika Catchings Award, given to the nation’s top freshman by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association.

With 25 points per game, Latson is fifth in the nation in scoring and leads all freshmen. She also leads all of Division I women’s basketball in free throws made per game with 6.7. The advanced numbers like her too, as she’s 10th in PER (40.5), third in offensive win shares (6.1) and first in points per-40 minutes (33.7).

Latson has also been named ACC Rookie of the Week eight times this season. Eight!

Perhaps more impressive than the raw numbers is that Latson has FSU saddled with a 16-3 overall record and a 5-1 mark in ACC play. A lot of folks expected FSU to take a step back this year with longtime coach Sue Semrau retiring and some of its top players, like Morgan Jones, entering the transfer portal. Florida State was picked to finish ninth in the ACC Preseason Poll.

But with Latson, all FSU has done is win. Two of FSU’s three losses were on neutral courts – to Oklahoma State and UConn – and the other was on the road in overtime to Boston College.

Notre Dame might be the ACC team with the best national championship odds, but as the women’s basketball season continues, we have to pay more attention to Florida State. And Latson is a big reason why, but they also have players like Sara Bejedi, who can do things like this:

Florida State vs Syracuse Game Preview, ACC Tournament

Why Florida State Will Win

The Seminoles have picked a nice time to start playing well.

it was a rough run over the second half of the season going 1-8, but they came up with a stunner over Virginia and took out Notre Dame and NC State to come into this relatively hot.

What is it doing right? It’s making its shots. That’s not a given for an offense that struggled to get to 40% on a regular basis for weeks.

On the flip side, the Syracuse defense has fallen off the map. It can always step it up now that the ACC Tournament lights are on – it’s Syracuse – but it’s getting roadside lately allowing teams to hit half of their shots over the last four games.

However …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Syracuse Will Win

The Orange are scoring.

The defense has been uncharacteristically bad lately, but the offense has been good from three, the team’s been strong from the free throw line, and there’s a decent burst from time to time.

There aren’t a lot of mistakes and there won’t be too many easy Florida State points, and that might mean everything – there can’t be any empty trips. The offense has to come through and keep pushing because …

Florida State vs Syracuse: What’s Going To Happen

Yeah, the Syracuse defense – it’s just not getting it done.

It doesn’t hack away and there aren’t a lot of fouls, but it’s not coming up with turnovers and it’s not as good on the boards as it needs to be.

Again, it’s Syracuse, so there’s always the shot at going on an out-of-the-blue run this weekend, but Florida State is playing too well and it’s too strong at moving the ball around to get sucked into the positives of the Orange defensive style.

Duke vs Florida State Game Preview

Why Florida State Will Win

The Seminoles got them once.

They pulled off a fun overtime win over the Blue Devils back in mid-January by getting seemingly every offensive rebound and overcoming a whole lot of misses with lots and lots of free throws.

It’s been a struggle to consistently shoot well, but the defense comes up with a ton of takeaways, there are plenty of nice interior playmakers who block a whole lot of shots, and Duke has the ability to go dead cold for stretches.

It has also had a problem at home lately with a loss to Virginia and two-point wins over both Clemson and Wake Forest. But …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Duke Will Win

Florida State just doesn’t shoot well enough.

It doesn’t score consistently, it’s not always on from three, and for all the good things the team did in the first meeting, there aren’t enough rebounds.

Oh, the Seminoles can hit the offensive boards, but that’s partly because they miss a whole lot of shots.

Duke might not be quite playing as well as it should, but it’s been solid from the field ever since an off day in a win at Notre Dame, and it’s doing a stronger job at getting to the free throw line on a regular basis.

Duke has allowed one team – Clemson – to hit 40% or better from three 17 of the last 18 games, so …

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Duke is overdue for a strong performance at home.

It’s been able to hit enough shots to get by, but the defense has been a letdown a bit too often – there are too many lulls.

Florida State might be struggling in a big, big way – losing six in a row before slipping by Clemson – but it’s just not shooting well.

5-star PF Michael Foster makes commitment

Georgia and FSU were in the top 3 schools for 5-star power forward Michael Foster. Instead, Foster committed to playing in the NBA G League

The Georgia Bulldogs were in the top three schools for five-star power forward Michael Foster. However, Foster committed to playing in the NBA G League as expected. Foster is a member of the class of 2021 and is 6 feet, 9 inches tall. The Hillcrest Prep (Phoenix, Arizona) star weighs 220 pounds.

Foster is a good at rebounding, is a viable rim protector, and shows touch when finishing inside the paint. The five-star power forward is a good passer and capable shooter as well.

In addition to Georgia, Foster was considering the Florida State Seminoles.

Foster is ranked No. 14 in his recruit class and No. 5 among power forwards. He was one of the top remaining uncommitted prospects in the nation.

Head coach Tom Crean and the Georgia Bulldogs have the 67th-ranked class of 2021, so Georgia needs to add more talented recruits. The Dawgs have lost several key players to the NCAA transfer portal. Fortunately, Georgia has added some transfers.

On the other hand, Florida State has the No. 5 recruiting class in college basketball.

Foster will be fun to watch in the NBA G League, but far more fans watch college basketball. Casual fans will not think of NBA G League stars until NBA draft rolls around. Take a look at some of Michael Foster’s highlights here:

ACC Tournament: Betting Odds

The most interesting bet on the board to me is Louisville at +340.

Tuesday night kicks off the 2020 ACC Tournament from Greensboro, North Carolina.  The four top seeds; Florida State, Virginia, Louisville and Duke all get a bye into the quarterfinals that begin Thursday but odds are out for all 14 ACC schools.

Per BetMGM, top-seeded Florida State enters the tournament as a +200 betting favorite.  For the inexperienced gamblers, that simply means for every dollar you risk betting Florida State to win it all, you’ll be rewarded with two dollars in winnings.  For instance – a ten dollar bet on Florida State would pay $30 ($20 in winnings and your $10 bet back).  Keep that in mind for the rest of the odds.

Duke may enter the tournament with the fourth seed but has the second best odds of winning at +240.  No. 3 Louisville (+340) and No.4 Virginia (+700) round out the teams with byes through the first and second rounds.

From there odds drop significantly as you’ll find No. 5 North Carolina State at +2500 while No. 6 Syracuse and No. 8 Clemson both pay +3300 odds.  After that is finally where you’ll find No. 7 Notre Dame at +4000 or 40-1 odds.

No. 14 North Carolina checks in at +5500 before No. 9 Miami and No. 13 Wake Forest at +10000.  No. 11 Virginia Tech has the second longest odds at +15000 while Notre Dame’s first round opponent, No. 10 Boston College has the longest odds on the board at +20000.

Odds via BetMGM. Access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated 2/8 at 8:30 p.m. ET.

The most interesting bet on the board to me is Louisville at +340.  They dropped two of their final three regular season contests and three of their final six but find themselves with plenty of talent and on the other side of the bracket than both Florida State and Duke, instead having a very-beatable despite good Virginia team on their side.
