Gators News: Baseball top-ranked in recruiting, former softball star scores big

Even on a slow news day there can be good news.

As Tuesdays are wont to be, today is a bit of a low news day as no sports programs are in competition until Thursday. However, the baseball team got some good news on Monday when one prestigious publication announced that the Gators have the top recruiting class in the nation and a former Florida standout claims the top prize in her softball league. Here is a quick look at the latest from the Gator Nation.

Here’s how CBS Sports grades UF’s Week 4 performance

CBS Sports’ Barrett Sallee gave the Gators a “B+,” saying that Emory Jones played his best game as Florida’s starter.

Florida’s 38-14 win over Tennessee was close at halftime, but it wasn’t for very long after that. The Gators’ offense rolled for another successful game on the ground, and quarterback Emory Jones had a very solid game through the air.

UF’s defense was a bit concerning as the Volunteers were able to hit a couple of early big plays that helped keep the contest within reach in the first half, but it tightened up much more later on.

Overall, CBS Sports’ Barrett Sallee was impressed by Florida’s performance, and he gave the team a “B+” grade for its efforts on Saturday.

The Gators let Tennessee hang around for a bit, but Emory Jones and Malik Davis put the game out of reach in the second half. It’s a rivalry, so it was no surprise to see Tennessee play up to its competition for a half or so. Jones had his best game as Florida’s starter — by far.

The Vols certainly gave the Gators a fight in the first half, but Florida managed to avoid mistakes on offense, and UT was shut out in the second half.

It was a solid follow-up to a heartbreaking but impressive loss to Alabama last week, and it should give the team (and Jones especially) a boost in confidence heading into a road game against a Kentucky team who could prove to be tricky for UF.

What do Florida’s playoff chances look like after Week 4?

Here’s what ESPN’s CFP model says about Florida’s chances to make the four-team field.

The Gators already have a loss on the 2021 season, which certainly makes a playoff berth an uphill battle with little room for error. But with that being said, Florida made Alabama look vulnerable in that game, and if it can successfully pull off an upset against Georgia, it will likely draw a rematch with the Crimson Tide with a College Football Playoff spot on the line.

Currently, ESPN’s CFP model gives UF an 11% chance to make the playoff as things currently stand. Those odds aren’t great, but the model also allows us to test multiple scenarios and see how they affect Florida’s odds. For example, if the Gators are able to win out the rest of the year (including the SEC Championship), they have a 98% chance of making the CFP field.

However, those odds decrease significantly (though not to zero) if the Gators were to lose to the Crimson Tide in a rematch in the conference title game. In that circumstance, a two-loss UF team would have a 42% chance of making the field.

Obviously, dropping another game in the regular season would seriously dampen those hopes, but it wouldn’t end them entirely. If Florida loses to Georgia, it only has a 17% chance of making the CFP as a non-division champion. However, if that loss is someone other than Georgia and a two-loss UF team is somehow able to win the East and then the conference, it would likely become the first two-loss playoff team in history with an 83% chance to make the field.

These odds are obviously very fluid, and the common theme is that if Florida does not win the SEC, it will need a lot of outside help to crack the playoff field. But despite the early loss, a playoff appearance is still absolutely on the table for this team if it can avoid further slipups.

Gators rise in latest SP+ rankings after win over Vols

The Gators moved up to No. 4 in the latest update of Bill Connelly’s SP+ rankings.

While Florida’s defense allowed several big plays on Saturday that kept Tennessee in the game early on, it was a fairly dominating performance for the Gators, who gained more than 500 yards on offense en route to a 38-14 win.

With that victory, UF saw a fairly big rise in this week’s SP+ rankings, the analytics system created by ESPN’s Bill Connelly. SP+ attempts to be a pure efficiency measure that attempts to control for tempo and opponent while only taking quality of play, not wins and losses, into account.

And in Connelly’s Week 4 update of the rankings, Florida ranks No. 4 nationally. There’s a bit of a log jam in the top 10, as the Gators and the No. 8 ranked Michigan Wolverines are less than two points apart from one another.

In spite of the Week 2 loss to Oregon, Ohio State is the only other one-loss team ranked ahead of the Gators, coming in at No. 3. Meanwhile, there’s a new No. 1, as Georgia has jumped now-No. 2 Alabama after a 62-0 win at Vanderbilt.

Florida’s high ranking is largely thanks to its offense, which ranks third in the nation according to SP+. The passing attack has been inconsistent, but the Gators have arguably the best ground game in college football. Defensively, things have been a lot better this season. Though the unit isn’t elite, it still ranks a respectable 23rd. Special teams for Florida are less impressive, ranking just 50th.

It’s clear that the numbers buy into this UF team. But we’ll see if the Gators have what it takes to spring an upset against Georgia and capture back-to-back SEC East titles.

Gators News: Recapping a mostly winning weekend for the Orange and Blue

Things were looking pretty good in the Gator Nation this past weekend.

Welcome back from a weekend chock-full-o Gators sports and the good news is that it was a mostly winning weekend for the Orange and Blue, with the exception of the volleyball team, which lost its first game ever to this weekend’s opponent. Otherwise, the football team came away with a strong win, while both tennis teams shone in tournament competition as well as the women’s golf team. Plus, after a few grueling opening weeks to the season, the soccer team appears to finally be finding its way.

Here is the latest from the Gator Nation.

SEC Power Rankings: Arkansas threatening Florida for No. 3 after upset

Week 4 of SEC football was perhaps the most eventful so far with a major upset.

Five conference games were played across the Southeastern Conference in Week 4 of the college football season, and there are some major changes in this week’s power rankings as a result.

Alabama, Georgia and Florida all won and stayed put at the top of the rankings, but the big moves come from Arkansas upsetting Texas A&M. The Razorbacks solidified themselves as one of the strongest teams in the SEC this year, and are becoming one of the best stories in the entire country.

Auburn, Kentucky and LSU barely made it out of the weekend with a win, while Ole Miss got to move up the list without even playing a game. Tennesse, Missouri and South Carolina were less fortunate with all three falling to 2-2 overall.

Here is how all 14 SEC teams stack up after a wild Week 4 in college football.

Dan Mullen’s faith in QB Emory Jones is paying off

Emory Jones hasn’t turned the ball over since the first quarter against Alabama, and he looks like a completely different quarterback now.

It was a career day for Florida quarterback Emory Jones on Saturday against Tennessee. Jones finished the day as just the second Gator in the last 25 years to pass for over 200 yards and rush for over 100 yards in the same game.

The last guy to do it? A guy named Tim Tebow.

After hearing boos rain down against him against Alabama, Jones did what he always does and got ready for the next week unphased by a supposed “Florida quarterback controversy.” Backup Anthony Richardson was responsible for a handful of explosive plays early in the season, and the Gator Nation began to question why Jones was still Dan Mullen‘s unquestioned starter.

The former five-star recruit answered the questions emphatically against the Volunteers, finishing the game with 209 passing yards, two passing touchdowns and 144 rushing yards. After weeks of uncertainty, Jones is finally settling into his new role.

“I think you see him [Jones] really settling down,” said coach Dan Mullen. “I thought he did a great job making his reads, managing the offense, and getting us in the right checks and into the right plays. His decision-making was pretty good in the past game.”

Jones completed 21 of 27 passes against the Volunteers, which is the most accurate he’s looked all year. Much of his success in the air came as a result of Tennessee focusing on Florida’s deadly run game. Jones could threaten a scramble and either take off with it for the first down or dump it off as coverage broke down.

“I’ve always been pretty good at throwing the ball on the run,” Jones said. “Every game, I’ve been getting more confident and trying to build that. For the most part, I trust in my guys so I could be more confident sitting out there throwing in and outside the pocket. The guys up front did a pretty good job. They helped me out and made a lot of plays for me.”

Many of the runs Jones ended up breaking were designed pass plays. In just four games as a starter, he’s developed a better sense for when to take a chance on a risky throw. Jones threw two interceptions against both Florida Atlantic and USF, but he hasn’t turned the ball over since the first quarter of the Alabama game.

Tennessee’s defense began to figure out an answer to Florida’s running backs, but they had no answer for Jones.

“No matter who you play, the quarterback can get loose,” Tennessee defensive back Alontae Taylor said. “And if you don’t contain the quarterback, he is going to make plays with his feet. The emphasis was on stopping the run, and I feel like we did a pretty good job with the running backs. But as far as containing the quarterback, we didn’t do so well. We just got to wrap up and make more tackles.”

Jones’ recent play should have garnered him some more support from the Florida faithful, but he may just be getting started if that’s not enough. Running back Dameon Pierce expects big things from his quarterback as Florida’s season continues.

“Yeah, he has more to come,” Pierce said. “That just scratched the surface for Emory. He’s a guy with a lot of potential and a lot of grit. He’s still getting comfortable and he’s still getting his feet wet, so expect more of that for Emory.”

Gators move into AP Top 10 after a win over Volunteers

Florida is a top 10 team, according to the latest AP Poll, but another SEC team has leapfrogged the Gators.

Florida beat Tennessee convincingly enough in Week 4 to move up one spot in the AP Poll and into the Top 10. Emory Jones looked as good as ever for the Gators, and the country is starting to consider Florida a contender alongside the other conference powers.

Florida could have moved up a bit more, but another team from the Southeastern Conference pulled off a pretty big upset this weekend. Arkansas upset Texas A&M on Saturday and jumped ahead of Florida and No. 12 Ole Miss to No. 8. The Aggies fell from No. 7 to No. 15 with the loss, dropping from third to sixth-highest ranked in the conference.

Notre Dame also moved ahead of Florida but Clemson and Ohio State struggled enough to fall out of the Top 10 and make room. The top three teams in the country remain the same with No. 3 Oregon behind No. 1 Alabama and No. 2 Georgia.

Auburn is the last SEC team on the AP Top 25 at No. 22. The Tigers needed a last-minute comeback to beat Georgia State this week, but they weren’t punished after one of the more hectic weeks across college football.

The Good, Bad and Ugly: Breaking down Florida’s win over Tennessee

The Gators Wire staff breaks down Saturday night’s strong win against SEC East foe Tennessee.

The dust has now settled in Ben Hill Griffin Stadium after the Florida Gators gave the visiting Tennessee Volunteers the ol’ Swamp treatment on Saturday night, notching a convincing 38-14 win against their SEC East foes. The first half had the Gator Nation biting its nails, as the Big Orange took a 14-10 lead early in the second quarter and only trailed by three at the half. That, however, was the extent of the scoring for the boys from Rocky Top as the Orange and Blue put up 28 unanswered points to punctuate the victory.

Now that there has been some time to chew on the results from Florida’s win on Saturday night, the Gators Wire staff presents its Good, Bad and Ugly from the battle between the two SEC East rivals in the Swamp. Take a look at our retrospective takes below.

Here’s where Florida stands in the latest USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll

The Gators moved up to No. 9 in the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll

Florida avoided a letdown against Tennessee after taking the No. 1 team in the country to the wire the week before. The Volunteers put up a good fight, especially in the first half, but they couldn’t achieve sustainable ball movement, relying instead on a handful of inconsistent big plays.

Quarterback Emory Jones took another step forward in his development, and the run game was dominant yet again.

It was a very solid performance for the Gators, even if they were a bit sloppy to start. And with two teams in the top 10 losing in previous No. 5 Texas A&M and No. 7 Clemson, Florida is vaulting those teams into the top 10 in the latest update of the USA TODAY Sports Coaches poll, ranking No. 9.

UF is now the third-highest ranked SEC team behind No. 1 Alabama and No. 2 Georgia.

With the win over the Vols, UF moves to 3-1 (1-1 SEC) on the season. Next up is its first conference road trip against a Kentucky team that tends to give Florida fits. In the Gators’ last trip to Lexington in 2019, quarterback Feleipe Franks suffered a season-ending ankle injury, prompting Kyle Trask to take over as the starting quarterback and begin his prolific run by leading a comeback against the Wildcats.
