On Thursday, the Freshman All-SEC team was announced, LSU defensive end Maason Smith and wider receiver Malik Nabers were both named to the team. The league coaches vote on the Freshman All-SEC team.

A five-star recruit coming out of Terrebonne High School, Smith made a significant impact at LSU in his freshman season. Smith started the season as a defensive tackle and then was moved to defensive end. Smith finished the season with 19 tackles, five tackles for a loss, and four sacks. Three of those four sacks came in a game against McNeese State. Smith was having a great season before he got injured and missed the season’s final four games.

Nabers, a four-star recruit, played his high school ball at Southside; he started six out of the ten games he played. Nabers caught four passes for 143 yards and a touchdown against ULM; he had six receptions, his career-best so far in his young career the following week. The Freshman receiver finished the season with 26 catches for 400 yards and three touchdowns.

New Head coach Brian Kelly will have some young talent to work with Smith and Nabers on the roster. With two young players like that, LSU’s future could be bright. It’s up to Smith and Nabers to continue to develop so they can be the best players they can be.

LSU among top schools for 2023 five-star defensive end

LSU is among the top schools for a top Texas talent.

Despite the fact that the LSU Tigers aren’t sure who their head coach is going to be, they still find themselves in the running for a top-rated recruit.

On Sunday, the No. 1 player in the state of Texas named his top 11 schools with the Tigers right there in the mix. The usual suspects made the cut with Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Ohio State, Texas, and Texas A&M. Plenty of competition for the top defensive lineman in the class according to Rivals.

Hicks attended the Tigers camp back in June. It will be important for the new hire to try and bring him to the Bayou. For now, the Tigers are right in the mix for his pledge.

Oklahoma signee Caleb Williams viewed as the No. 1 prospect according to new recruiting service

New recruiting service On3 Sports ranks 2021 Oklahoma Sooners signee Caleb Williams as the No. 1 prospect, they see Clayton Smith higher than 247Sports composite ranking as well.

In the world of college football recruiting there are three major recruiting services. ESPN, Rivals, and 247Sports are the major sites to provide coverage of college recruiting. According to the composite scores, quarterback Caleb Williams was viewed as the No. 1 quarterback and No. 6 player of his class.

A look at the breakdown from each recruiting service

Rating

Stars Overall State Position
247 5 7 1 1
Rivals 5 5 1 1
ESPN 4 16 1 1
247 Composite 5 6 1 1

All three services ranked Williams as the No. 1 quarterback but his overall ranking varied from No. 5 to No. 16. ESPN was the only service that ranked him below a five-star. Whichever way you view it, the Oklahoma Sooners landed the top quarterback of the 2021 class. For now, he will back up fellow five-star signee from the 2019 class, Spencer Rattler. Williams is viewed as the quarterback of 2022 and beyond.

Now there is another recruiting service getting into the mix with On3 Recruits. From the founders of Rivals and 247Sports, On3 is expected to officially launch in August of this year just ahead of football season. Despite the fact that they haven’t launched yet hasn’t prevented them from putting out content already. They ranked the five-star prospects from the 2021 class and Williams was the top overall player of the class.

This just goes to show you how highly touted the 2021 classes’ top prospect for Oklahoma is viewed. He will be the No. 2 quarterback for the Sooners in 2021 but could rise to No. 1 provided Rattler exits stage left when the NFL draft takes place for 2022.

On3 also ranked another player in their top 32 players of the 2021 class, edge defender Clayton Smith. He ranked at No. 37 nationally according to his 247Sports composite ranking. On3 viewed him as a five-star prospect at No. 22 overall.

On3’s ranking of Smith was more in line with how Rivals viewed him. He was a five-star prospect ranked top two at his position at No. 23 overall. ESPN was much lower than both 247Sports and Rivals as they listed him as the No. 84 prospect overall as a four-star player.

On3 Sports will be yet another service to check out when it comes to recruiting.

Texas offers Lebbeus Overton, the No. 1 player in 2023 recruiting class

Texas is finally getting in the game for the No. 1 prospect in the ’23 class. On Monday, UT offered five-star strongside DE Lebbeus Overton.

Texas is finally getting in the game for the No. 1 prospect in the 2023 recruiting class. On Monday, the Longhorns offered five-star strongside defensive end Lebbeus Overton.

Much like quarterback target Quinn Ewers, Overton is rated a perfect 1.000 on the 247Sports composite. Overton has been the No. 1 player ever since the 2023 class rankings debuted in August 2020.

To say family connections go against the Longhorns would be… generous. Overton’s father, Milton, played college football across the Red River from 1991-1994. Five years later, he was the Associate Athletic Director at Texas A&M until 2009. One 247Sports crystal ball has been inserted for Overton in favor of the Sooners.

Pete Kwiatkowski’s scheme would see Overton project more as a defensive tackle than a defensive end. He is about 20 pounds lighter than Alfred Collins coming out of high school but is only a sophomore and will have plenty of room to grow. Overton is athletic as well, even playing tight end last season.

Texas offers No. 1 player from Washington in defensive end Jayden Wayne

On Tuesday, Steve Sarkisian and Texas offered strongside defensive end Jayden Wayne. The 247Sports composite five-star has begun to explode.

Steve Sarkisian is once again attempting to build good recruiting relationships in his former home state. The former Washington head coach has kept his west coast connections, even after moving to the other side of the Mississippi before landing in Austin.

On Tuesday, Sarkisian offered strongside defensive end Jayden Wayne. The 247Sports composite five-star has begun to explode, receiving three offers on Tuesday alone. Alabama and Miami joined the party as well.

Wayne is a member of the 2023 recruiting class, one Texas is trying to capitalize on early in the process. Four-star running back Rueben Owens has already shut down his recruitment and has now become a recruiter for the Longhorns.

With how highly ranked Wayne is, he will have options from across the nation. Pete Kwiatkowski also knows the pacific northwest well, coming straight from Washington. The defensive coordinator should be a huge factor in Wayne’s recruitment if Texas wants to stay in it.
