Penn State fills 2025 schedule with final non-conference matchup, per report

Penn State has found its final opponent to add to the 2025 football schedule, according to a report.

Penn State has reportedly filled the last vacancy on its football schedule for the 2025 season. According to a report from Brett McMurphy of The Action Network, Penn State will host Florida International for a non-conference game in 2025, giving the Nittany Lions a full 12-game schedule to look forward to.

According to the report from McMurphy, via social media, Penn State will host FIU on Sept. 6, 2025. That would fall between the season opener at home against Nevada on Aug. 30, 2025 and a home game against Villanova on Sept. 13, 2025.

Penn State has faced FIU once before, with the Nittany Lions winning a laugher by a score of 59-0 in 2007. Penn State’s defense, led by Sean Lee, forced five fumbles and Anthony Morelli passed for 295 yards with three touchdowns in the rout. It was the first game coached on the sidelines by Joe Paterno after suffering a broken leg during the 2006 season. Jordan Norwood caught five passes for 92 yards and Evan Royster led the team with 70 rushing yards.

Penn State’s 2025 schedule is now fully booked with three non-conference games and nine Big Ten matchups, although the Big Ten schedule still has to be hashed out with exact dates. Penn State is scheduled to host Indiana, Nebraska, Northwestern, and Oregon in Big Ten play in 2025. The Nittany Lions will make road trips to Iowa, Michigan State, Ohio State, Rutgers, and UCLA in 2025. The 2025 matchup with Oregon will be the first against the Ducks as Big Ten foes. Penn State will not face Oregon in 2024 but will face new Big Ten members UCLA, USC, and Washington.

Here is an updated look at Penn State’s 2025 football schedule as it stands now:

Penn State 2025 football schedule

  • SEPT. 6 – FIU
  • SEPT. 13 – VILLANOVA

Duke softball breezes past FIU for sixth straight win

In the second game of a Friday doubleheader, Duke scored six runs and held the Golden Panthers scoreless to extend their win streak.

The Duke softball team improved to 6-1 on its young season on Friday night with its second win of the day, a 6-0 win over Florida International.

After a ho-hum offensive display through the first six innings against Rutgers during the Blue Devils’ first game of the day, Duke’s bats took no time coming alive against the Golden Panthers.

Star leadoff hitter D’Auna Jennings singled in the opening at-bat. Ana Gold, who became the first Blue Devil to hit two grand slams in the same game on Wednesday against North Dakota State, tacked another RBI onto her season total with a double to plate Jennings before the first out.

Sophomore Aminah Vega doubled later in the inning to bring home Gold and give Duke its second run of the opening inning. Vega plated a second RBI in the fourth inning, a sacrifice fly, to increase her season total to 11, second on the team only to Gold’s 13.

The second inning went just as well, with shortstop Jada Baker lacing a double into left field to bring home Amiah Burgess. Jennings added to her excellent start with another single immediately after, and Baker scored after a wild throw on the ensuing defensive play.

After not tallying a hit in any of her four at-bats against Rutgers, Jennings finished the evening game with three hits in three plate appearances, scoring twice. It was her second perfect performance in Duke’s past three games as the sophomore went 2-2 during the NDSU victory.

The Blue Devils surged out to a 4-0 lead through two innings, and that proved to be more than enough run support for Cassidy Curd and Lillie Walker in the circle.

Curd delivered for the first three innings, allowing two hits but no runs while striking out five batters. Walker took over at the start of the fourth and made it the rest of the way home, also allowing two hits and striking out six batters herself in the tandem shutout.

The Golden Panthers never had more than four at-bats in any inning as the two Duke pitchers refused to let them gain any steam.

The Blue Devils tacked on two more insurance runs in the sixth inning, first an RBI single from senior Claire Davidson before Vega’s sacrifice fly.

Duke didn’t score in the final three innings, but with Curd and Walker’s efforts on the mound, it didn’t need to. The 6-0 margin held for the rest of the game to give the Blue Devils their sixth straight win.

The Duke softball team puts its lengthening win streak on the line again on Saturday morning against Army.

FIU Panthers Preview 2022

It was supposed to work better than that.

FIU had the coach in Butch Davis who knew Miami, there was just enough talent to make a splash, and the program was supposed to take steps forward and become a bigger factor. Instead, the 2021 season opened with a win over Long Island, and that was it.

The offense was a total disaster as the season went on, the defense never showed up, and the turnaround season led to a regime change and a total reboot.

The 2019 team shocked Miami late in the season on the way to a bowl game. Since then it’s 1-17 with just that lone victory over the Sharks.

Enter Mike MacIntyre and with him comes hope.

He did the absolute impossible and made San Jose State great going from 1-12 when he first took over in 2010 to 10-2 two years later.

He did the almost impossible and pushed Colorado through three tough seasons to 10-4 in 2016. He wasn’t able to sustain the success, but the Buffs were hardly awful in the two years before he was canned.

Now he has another tough mountain to climb. It’s not going to happen overnight, but he’s a good defensive coach who should at least make the Panthers more competitive.

FIU Panthers Preview 2022: Offense

The FIU offense couldn’t move the chains, the running game didn’t exist, and the offensive line didn’t give anyone time to work. New offensive coordinator David Yost knows how to get a passing game going and he knows how to coach up quarterbacks, coming off a few years at Texas Tech and known for his time as a star assistant at Missouri under Gary Pinkel.

This is going to take a bit. FIU is starting from scratch, but the up-tempo attack will be fun, and …

There are new parts of the passing game that should work. Gunnar Holmberg isn’t going to be Aaron Rodgers, but he’s a veteran quarterback from Duke who should settle the position … maybe. Haden Carlson and Grayson James are getting every shot at the gig.

Leading receiver Tyrese Chambers is back along with former USF transfer Randall St. Felix to go along with Sharod Johnson (Syracuse) and Jacolby Hewitt (Indiana). The passing attack that averaged 265 yards per game should keep going. But …

The offensive front has to be night-and-day better. Two starters are back, and there’s size and a little help from the transfer portal, but this group was a major problem with nothing happening in pass protection and little help for the ground game.

The backs are okay, but they need room. Lexington Joseph averaged 4.8 yards per carry -the backs should average close to five yards per pop. Now the line has to keep the quarterback from getting hit to keep that rushing average from nosediving.

FIU Panthers Preview 2022: Defense

New defensive coordinator Jovan Dewitt has been around the block – he was a linebackers coach at Nebraska and North Carolina over the last few years -and he knows the south Florida area. Job One is to generate pressure for a D that was the third-worst in college football overall, didn’t force takeaways, and allowed close to 40 points per game.

There are a few okay parts coming back, and it starts with the defensive front. There’s not a lot of size, but all things considered, there’s a little bit of experience to play around with. Someone has to help 6-1, 263-pound end Davon Strickland make more plays behind the line, and there has to be a good rotation to hold up inside.

The secondary didn’t do a whole bunch, but it had good corners in Richard and Rishard Dames. They’re gone, but the young safeties are back starting with Jamal Potts and Demetrius Hill bringing good size and a little bit of experience.

Gaethan Bernadel made 44 tackles from one linebacker spot, but this is one of the team’s thinnest areas considering the D would like to work around a 4-3 as much as possible.

No one knows what’s going to happen to the 2020 college football season. We’ll take a general look at where each team stands – doing it without spring ball to go by – while crossing our fingers that we’ll all have some well-deserved fun this fall. Hoping you and yours are safe and healthy.

5. College Football News Preview 2020: FIU Golden Panthers Offense 3 Things To Know

The offense took a step back from a strong 2018, only averaging 377 yards while failing to hit 28 points seven times – it only failed to get there four times in 2018.

And now it has to go on with QB James Morgan off being a New York Jet.

Morgan had a big arm and was able to push the ball deep, but he only hit 58% of his chances. Junior Kaylan Wiggins was the main backup, and he got in a little work. He’s going to get the longest first look, and unlike Morgan, he can run.

If Wiggins gets the gig, expect over 500 yards on the ground from the position. Miami native Caleb Lynum and former decent recruit Stone Norton are good prospects who’ll push for the job.

The offensive line was one of the best in the nation in pass protection, and it led Conference USA in sacks allowed. Three starters are back with excellent size across the board, starting with 6-5, 320-pound D’Antne Demery returning at left tackle. However, losing tackle Devontay Taylor to Florida State stings.

There’s enough in place to be okay again, though, and it should be decent for a running game that has to find some more options. The top two backs are gone, and Wiggins was third on the team with 323 yards.

Senior D’Vonte Price got in a little work with 249 yards on 50 carries, but Arkansas speedster Maleek Williams should be an instant star, and 6-3, 215-pound Shaun Peterson will bring a little pop.

The receiving corps needs some work. Senior Shemar Thornton is back after leading the team with 51 catches for 668 yards and five scores, but just about everyone else is gone. TE Sterling Palmer returns coming off a 22-catch season, but in all, five of the top seven pass catchers are gone.

On the way is Georgia transfer JJ Holloman, Bryce Singleton is back after missing last year hurt, and a few possibilities come in from the recruiting class, but it’s going to be a work in progress.
