DRAFT STOCK: Alabama OT Evan Neal moves into No. 1 overall territory

Evan Neal is trending toward being the top pick!

Nick Saban has countless stars for NFL teams. Whether it be a quarterback at No. 5 overall or a defensive lineman at No. 3 overall, former Crimson Tide stars are usually off the board quickly on draft night.

Alabama offensive tackle Evan Neal may move into uncharted territory during the Saban era, as he is now projected by some to be the first overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.

The Jacksonville Jaguars currently hold the pick if the season ended today. Turmoil occurred in the 2021 season regarding head coach, now former head coach, Urban Meyer.

In the 2021 draft, Jacksonville selected Trevor Lawrence first overall. His rookie season has been abysmal, and part of it is due to poor performance from those up front who are supposed to be protecting him.

Two recent NFL mock drafts project Neal to be the Jaguars pick at No. 1 overall.

Michael Thomas congratulates Joe Burrow on being picked first overall

New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas is a big fan of LSU QB Joe Burrow, picked first overall by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2020 NFL Draft

LSU Tigers quarterback Joe Burrow was picked first overall by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2020 NFL Draft, and he has a big fan in New Orleans Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas.

Thomas congratulated Burrow on his accomplishment and his arrival to the NFL, acknowledging the struggles Burrow experienced at the college level before his breakout 2019 season. Burrow once played for Thomas’s alma mater with the Ohio State Buckeyes, but transferred to LSU after losing the starting quarterback battle with Dwayne Haskins.

It’s a great gesture by Thomas, who has dealt with his own adversity before a meteoric rise into NFL history. Maybe Burrow will experience a similar surge in Cincinnati, a town that’s been hurting for someone to rally around.

However, Burrow already played a part in making NFL history — immediately after he was selected first overall, the subsequent picks were Buckeyes teammates Chase Young (to the Washington Redskins) and Jeff Okudah (to the Detroit Lions). It’s the first time in the draft’s history that three teammates made up the first three picks. And that’s something Thomas, a proud Buckeye himself, took note of:

Analyzing the odds on who will be selected first overall in the 2020 NFL Draft, with NFL betting odds, picks and best bets.

The 2020 NFL Draft remains set for Thursday, April 23, and it appears we know very little about who will go where. Free agency is still in full swing and we aren’t even sure where some of the top quarterbacks may land ahead of the draft.

However, we have a pretty good grasp of who will wind up going at pick No. 1. BetMGM has posted the odds for the player to be selected with the No. 1 pick. Take a look at the most notable odds below.

Given the -5000 odds, it seems highly unlikely the Cincinnati Bengals would select anyone other than LSU QB Joe Burrow with the No. 1 pick. Burrow is coming off one of the greatest college football seasons of all-time, winning the Heisman Trophy Award and a National Championship. Given the Bengals’ need for a franchise quarterback, this feels like a slam dunk.

However, the odds here for Burrow aren’t favorable enough that you should wager on him to be selected at No. 1. Bettors would win just $100 for every $5,000 risked. There just isn’t enough value here to bet on Burrow despite him very likely going at No. 1.

Another player worth considering is Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa. If he is medically cleared before the draft, he is the only other quarterback with a similar resume to that of Joe Burrow. On top of historic pass numbers at Alabama, Tagovailoa won a National Championship as a freshman and appeared in another in 2018. He has elite accuracy and athleticism that is reminiscent of Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson. At 19-1, Tagovailoa isn’t a bad long-shot bet considering just how incredibly talented he is.

Finally, Oregon QB Justin Herbert is a name worth mentioning at +3600 as he worked with the Bengals’ coaching staff at the 2020 Senior Bowl. Herbert had a fantastic week in Mobile, Alabama, as he was named the MVP of the game. It’s doubtful he is considered at No. 1 by the Bengals or any other team trading into that spot, but we have seen quarterbacks rise up draft boards later on in the process.
