Broncos assistant coach Favian Upshaw will take a close look at Senior Bowl running backs this week, including Cameron Skattebo.

Denver Broncos offensive quality control coach Favian Upshaw is set to coach the National Team running backs at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama this week, the all-star game announced on Saturday.

Upshaw will now get a close look at NT running backs Cameron Skattebo (Arizona State), LeQuint Allen (Syracuse), Donovan Edwards (Michigan), Ollie Gordon (OSU), Jo’quavious Marks (USC), Damien Martinez (Miami), Kalel Mullings (Michigan) and Bhayshul Tuten (Virginia Tech).

With Javonte Williams scheduled to become a free agent in March, the Broncos are expected to target running backs this offseason.

Skattebo (5-11, 216 pounds) is arguably the most notable RB that Upshaw will work with at the Senior Bowl. The 22-year-old senior is projected to be a third-round pick in the NFL draft.

Upshaw played quarterback at Georgia Southern before transitioning to coaching. After initially coaching at the high school level, he spent time at Tulane, Savannah State and Georgia Southern before jumping to the NFL with the Broncos in 2023.

The 2025 Senior Bowl will be played at 2:30 p.m. ET (12:30 p.m. MT) on Saturday, Feb. 1. The game will be televised on NFL Network.

QB-turned-coach Favian Upshaw gets first NFL opportunity with Broncos

Favian Upshaw, a former Georgia Southern QB, is joining the Broncos’ coaching staff after six years at the college and high school levels.

Favian Upshaw was a dual-threat co-starting quarterback at Georgia Southern from 2014-2016, helping the Eagles reach their first-ever bowl game in 2015. Upshaw rushed 12 times for 199 yards and four touchdowns in Georgia Southern’s 58-27 win over Bowling Green in the GoDaddy Bowl that season.

Upshaw finished his college career with 1,295 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground with 1,126 passing yards with six more scores through the air in 32 games.

After graduating from Georgia Southern with a degree in sport management in 2016, Upshaw got his start in coaching as a co-offensive coordinator with Astronaut High School in 2017. After that, Upshaw served as a graduate assistant for Tulane from 2018-19 while earning his master’s degree in liberal arts.

Upshaw then coached quarterbacks at Savannah State in 2020 before returning to his alma mater, Georgia Southern, as running backs coach in 2021. He returned to Tulane as an offensive analyst in 2022, marking his sixth year of coaching at a college or high school level.

Upshaw will not get his first coaching opportunity in the NFL after being hired by Sean Payton to serve as an offensive quality control coach with the Denver Broncos this season. He will work alongside fellow OCQ coach Logan Kilgore, a former QB who coached Arch Manning in high school.

Quality control work is not a glamorous job in the NFL, but it is a starting point for coaching at the highest level. The list of coaches who started as quality control assistants before later going on to become head coaches includes Jon Gruden, Ron Rivera and Robert Saleh.

Upshaw and Kilgore are now getting their first opportunities to coach in the NFL on Payton’s new staff in Denver.

The Broncos announced 11 additions to Sean Payton’s coaching staff on Saturday evening.

The Denver Broncos announced 11 additions to their 2023 coaching staff on Saturday evening. Broncos head coach Sean Payton has now finalized his group of assistants for his first season in Denver.

Here are the team’s new arrivals.

The Broncos published bios for the new assistant coaches on their official website. Denver previously announced 16 other coaches in February. Ranging from veterans like assistant head coach Mike Westhoff (75) to young, first-time coaches like quarterbacks coach Davis Webb (28), Payton will have a diverse staff with a good mix of youth and experience.

Denver’s new staff will make their debut when the Broncos begin their offseason program next month.
