UAB (-125) is worth playing on the money line as it looks to protect its home floor. The Blazers had a narrow loss against the Owls in the first meeting, tying FAU’s most narrow victory during the 20-game win streak.

FAU has been getting it done and playing consistent basketball, so it won’t get blown out. However, the ranked Owls will see their win streak end in Birmingham against a good Blazers team, and that’s OK.

UAB -1.5 (-105) is worth a roll of the dice at nearly even money as it simply needs to win by a bucket.

This is a good bet unless you feel FAU is going to keep its win streak alive or you believe the Blazers will only win by 1 point.

UAB has the offense to hang with anyone, and the Blazers won’t be fazed hitting the road to face FAU at “The Burrow.”

The Blazers have ripped off 5 consecutive wins, while posting 11 victories in the past 12 outings, with their only loss during the span at West Virginia Dec. 10.

FAU lost at Ole Miss Nov. 11, and it has recorded solid wins over Bryant and FGCU at home while topping Florida and North Texas on the road.

It won’t be easy for the Blazers, but they’ll get the narrow road win to stay atop the C-USA standings.

I’m going to PASS on the UAB (+105) moneyline and take the 2.5 points with the spread below. But backing the plus-money underdog here wouldn’t be terrible.

Against the spread

UAB +2.5 (-115) comes with a little risk, as it is just 1-5-1 ATS in the past 7 games overall while going a dismal 0-10-1 ATS in the past 11 road games.

FAU (-190) looked awfully impressive last weekend against Charlotte, but going on the road might be a different story. The Owls were just 1-5 straight up on the road last season, and that lone win was against the 49ers in conference play.

Against the spread

FAU -3.5 (-115) has cashed in just 1 of the previous 5 road games, so there is plenty of risk here. Over the years the Owls have been a much better team at home than on the road. However, QB N’Kosi Perry, RB Larry McCammon III and WR LaJohntay Wester were impressive last weekend. FAU should be able to top a team which won just 3 games a season ago.

Over/Under

OVER 49.5 (-110) is the lean here based upon FAU’s showing last weekend.

The Owls racked up 43 points at home, and there is no reason to believe the Bobcats will be able to slow the FAU offense to a crawl.

The Owls have been dominant at home, while struggling mightily on the road. FAU was steamrolled 31-14 as a 3.5-point underdog at UAB Oct. 9. The Owls are 0-3 straight up/1-2 against the spread (ATS) in three road games, averaging just 11.7 points per game (PPG).

FAU (-280) is winless on the road this season, but it’s heavily favored against a Charlotte team which hasn’t lost at home. That’s way too risky, although I do like the Owls to scratch out a close win behind senior QB N’Kosi Perry.

AVOID and look to the spread instead.

Against the spread

CHARLOTTE +7.5 (-120) is the best play on the board, perhaps for the entire slate of games Thursday. I love the 7 and a hook.

FAU -7.5 has been mediocre offensively on the road, and it’s 0-3 SU/ATS. Charlotte is 3-0 SU/ATS, including a win over Duke in the opener, its first-ever win over a Power 5 team.

Look for the 49ers to keep it close, if not win outright.

Over/Under

OVER 56.5 (-115) is the lean, although this is only worth a small-unit play. Charlotte is throwing up 29.8 PPG, ranking 57th in the nation, and it has a very balanced offense.

The defense has been shaky, allowing 447.7 total yards per game to rank 113th, and that’s why the 49ers are underdogs at home. Teams have gouged the 49ers on the ground, too, as Charlotte ranks 124th out of 130 FBS teams against the run, yielding 224.3 yards per game.

FAU won five of eight games last season before falling in its bowl game to Memphis. The Owls trail the all-time series against the Gators 3-0, but lost just 20-14 in overtime in the most recent meeting in 2015.

Florida is aiming for bigger things than just a win in the opener. Head coach Dan Mullen must replace QB Kyle Trask, TE Kyle Pitts and WR Kadarius Toney, but QB Emory Jones could make the transition relatively seamless.

Risking 18 times your potential return on Florida (-1800) is not a good long-term betting strategy.

AVOID, and look to the spread instead.

Against the spread

FAU +23.5 (-112) is the play, although I fully expect Florida to win this game. The problem with the Gators isn’t on offense, even though they’re replacing three big cogs. The issue with Florida is it allowed 30.8 points per game and 6.1 yards per play, and that defense needs to be shored up.

Florida added a number of recruits and transfers through the portal, but we need to see them jell together before they can be trusted.

FAU has former Miami QB N’Kosi Perry starting under center, so he should give the unit a much-needed improvement. The Owls defense ranked second in Conference USA with 17.4 PPG allowed, so they could slow down the Gators and their new skill position guys.

Over/Under

OVER 52.5 (-107) is a bit on the low side, but I’d only go with a small-unit wager here. Again, the Gators defense was putrid by their standards in 2020, and the Owls should be able to find the end zone at least a couple of times.

The Owls of FAU picked up five victories in eight regular-season games in 2020, head coach Willie Taggart’s first season at the helm. They closed the year with a 25-10 loss to Memphis in the Montgomery Bowl.

Florida won eight of its first nine games last season before suffering a 37-34 loss to LSU in the regular-season finale. The Gators then lost to Alabama in the SEC Championship Game 52-46 and then to Oklahoma 55-20 in the Sugar Bowl.

Memphis vs. FAU: Three things to know

These teams met in the 2007 New Orleans Bowl, FAU’s first postseason appearance in program history. The Owls rolled to a 44-27 win behind QB Rusty Smith for head coach Howard Schnellenberger, the legendary coach who is responsible for bringing college football to Boca Raton.
Memphis won its first three NCAA sanctioned bowl games but is just 2-8 in its past 10 postseason appearances, including a 5-game slide. Memphis is 0-4 ATS in the past four neutral-site games, and 0-5 ATS during its current bowl game losing streak.
FAU has never lost a bowl game, going 4-0 SU/ATS. The Owls are also 7-1 ATS in the past eight games against teams with a winning record. They beat SMU, another AAC team, 52-28 in the Boca Raton Bowl last season.

Memphis (-350) is a risky play based upon its recent bowl season futility, as well as the fact FAU (+260) is unbeaten in bowl games. AVOID and look to the spread instead.

Against the spread (ATS)

MEMPHIS -8.5 (-110) is the play, but you’re obviously going against the trends in this series. Sometimes trends are made to be broken, however. It’s obviously documented that FAU was great under past head coaches Schnellenberger and Lane Kiffin, but this is its first appearance under Willie Taggart. The Owls are just 1-4 ATS across the past five games overall, and the offense has really struggled to put up points.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 50.5 (-115) is a risky play considering FAU’s defense allowed 20 or fewer points in each of its games except for one. The offense has scored 24 or fewer points in six of eight games, including three games of 10 points or less. Still, the Tigers aren’t terribly effective on defense, and their offense will be able to crack the code of the Owls’ D.
