Wyoming’s, Kent State’s Potato Bowl uniforms resembled potatoes, and fans had so many thoughts

Potatoes all around!

College football bowl season means unlikely and exciting matchups, spikes in some players’ NFL Draft stocks and ample Gatorade (or other edible item) baths. It also means fun and wild color schemes that can look awesome or be a total disaster — depending on who you ask.

Enter the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.

After Kent State and Wyoming kicked off Tuesday afternoon in Boise, college football fans couldn’t help but notice all the bold colors on the field. While Wyoming wore its brown jerseys and deep yellow pants, Kent State was all golden and in a shade that was very similar to that of the Cowboys pants.

It’s almost like the two teams took the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl name to heart and purposely dressed up like potatoes as much as they could. Couple the uniform combos with Albertsons Stadium’s all-blue field, and there was a lot going on.

As far as the uniforms go, some fans loved the teams’ combined look, some hated it and some loved to hate it — as with pretty much anything in college football.

And, of course, they had so many thoughts. And a lot of jokes.

Kent State vs Wyoming Famous Idaho Potato Bowl Preview

Can Kent State drag Wyoming out on the dance floor? In Wyoming’s perfect world, it runs, controls the clock, relies on the defense, and manages to come up with just enough big defensive plays to own this from the start.

However, it’s had more than its share of shootouts this year. When the running game gets working – it ran for over 360 yards in two of the last four games – it can be almost as exciting as Kent State.

They call it the FlashFast style of offense. Kent State wants to go, go, go, keep defenses on their heels, and make teams feel like they have to keep pressing to make up for the scoring run that’s coning.

– Kent State might be coming off a disappointing MAC Championship loss to Northern Illinois – the Huskies dominated the time of possession battle – but when this is all working, the running game rips off yards in chunks, the passing attack hits big plays, and good games turn into up-and-down firefights once the takeaways start coming from the defense.

There’s a consistency problem for both teams. Kent State might like to play fast, but sometimes the other side is able to keep up, and then there’s an issue. The defense allowed 41 points or more six times.

Wyoming might have done everything right offensively in the bowl-sealing win over eventual Mountain West champion Utah State, and then the next week nothing worked against Hawaii.

Nevada comically penalized after french fry bath celebration in Famous Idaho Potato Bowl win

Too many fries on the field!

Regardless of what happens on the field, one of the best things about the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl is the french fry bath the winning team delivers to its winning coach. It’s exactly how Nevada celebrated its win over Tulane in the bowl game Tuesday at Albertsons Stadium.

With 17 seconds left in the game and Nevada up, 38-20, Wolf Pack players went in for the french fry bath for coach Jay Norvell — followed up by a splash of Gatorade, of course. But the celebration was dampened a little when they were dealt an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

The problem was that a bunch of french fries ended up on the field with officials standing nearby, making the potato-covered part of the turf near the 40-yard line hard to miss.

(Brian Losness-USA TODAY Sports)

And that led to a comical 15-yard penalty, which, lucky for Nevada, didn’t cost the Wolf Pack the game — although Tulane did score a garbage-time touchdown afterward for a 38-27 final score.

To the next participants of the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, keep the fry bath off the field to avoid a minor but really, pretty funny gaffe.

Nevada 38, Tulane 27: Famous Idaho Potato Bowl 10 Things To Know

The 10 ten things you need to know about Nevada win over Tulane in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.

Famous Idaho Potato Bowl: Nevada 38, Tulane 27

10. The loss of the top guys on the Tulane defensive front was devastating. Usually this year, the call is to not change up any pick too much, if at all, based on players being out – you never know who’s out on the other side until the game starts – but the Green Wave defensive front had a problem from the start. You can’t just make up for not having Patrick Johnson at one end.

9. Nevada came out running. The Tulane defensive front gave it a try, but couldn’t get the job done. The Wolf Pack don’t run – this has been a passing team all year – and yet it started the game setting a tone by daring the D line to come up with a stop. Toa Taua powered away for 102 yards, Devonte Lee ran for 105, and Tulane got outgained on the ground 209 to 197.

8. Tulane QB Michael Pratt had to press, and it didn’t work. It’s not that Tulane can’t or couldn’t throw this season, but the offense was mostly about being able to run effectively. It was fine on the ground – 197 yards and two touchdowns with over five yards per carry – but it wasn’t nearly enough. Pratt made a few big throws down the field, but he only hit 12-of-25 passes and gave up three picks.

7. This was huge for the Mountain West. Boise State is losing head coach Bryan Harsin to Auburn, conference champion San Jose State is playing Ball State in the Arizona Bowl instead of a good Power Five program, and Hawaii is playing Houston in the New Mexico Bow. That’s it – this is as high-profile as it might get this bowl season. It was a great showing for the bowl game and Nevada.

6. Nevada’s Lawson Hall came up with a gem. The senior linebacker ended up making a slew of plays down the field, and Tulane was able to run well, but he led the team with nine tackles with two sacks as part of a defensive front that came up with eight sacks and bothered Michael Pratt all game long.

5. Carson Strong is a budding star who’ll be a national thing in 2021. The Nevada QB completed 22-of-28 passes for 271 yards and five touchdowns with – almost most importantly – no picks. He didn’t make the big mistake to let the Green Wave into the game.

4. If it seemed like Nevada always had the ball, it’s because it did. This has been an okay team in the time of possession battle this year but for a style that’s not build on running – just 112 yards per game – it was able to control the pace like it needed to with well over 36 minutes of offensive time.

3. The Green Wave looked freaking freezing. It was in the high 60s in New Orleans on Tuesday and in the low 30s with snow and a 20 mph wind in Boise. Football players are some of the toughest humans on the planet, but literally and figuratively, Tulane came out cold.

2. Tulane has a habit under Willie Fritz of pulling games out of the fire in the second half – it did that in last year’s bowl win over Southern Miss – but it dug too deep a hole. The adjustments were good, the team played with a renewed energy in the second half, and it was a good try, but it was too late.

1. That’s the Nevada and the Mountain West that showed up early on this year. It might have lost to San Jose State and didn’t get a shot to win the conference title, but this put an end to a strong season and a great step forward under Jay Norvell. You absolutely take 7-2 with a double-digit bowl this season.

Nevada flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct: french fries on the field

A french fry bath led to a 15-yard penalty on Nevada

It could only happen in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Nevada in the final minute of its victory over Tulane on Tuesday.

The cause for the flag: french fries on the field. And some Gatorade.

The Wolf Pack were leading 38-20 when they decided to douse coach Jay Norvell with the traditional french-fry bath and followed with the drink to wash them down.

The problem was the game was not over and the officials threw the flag on Nevada.

The 15-yard penalty set Tulane up at its 35-yard line and

Cameron Carroll took advantage of the better field position and ran for a 65-yard score as time wound down.

Watch: Nevada pulls off tricky flea-flicker for TD

Nevada with the trickeration for a touchdown in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl

The game has one of the best names: The Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.

And the contest on Tuesday has what will surely be one of the best plays of the bowl season.

Check it out as the Nevada Wolf Pack works the flea-flicker to perfection against Tulane in the second quarter.

The pass went from Carson Strong to Toa Taua for 44 yards after the trickeration.

1st & 10 at TULN 44

(12:42 – 2nd) Carson Strong pass complete to Toa Taua for 44 yds for a TD (Two-Point Conversion failed )

Three Reasons Why You Should Watch The Famous Idaho Potato Bowl

It’s as interesting a fish-out-of-water game as possible for a Tulane team coming up from New Orleans to take what would normally be a MAC spot vs. a Mountain West team. The Green Wave come in after winning four of their last five games with the only loss in the bunch at Tulsa, and they’re looking for their fifth win in six bowl appearances going back to 1987 when some Mack Brown guy couldn’t win the Independence against Washington.

Head coach Willie Fritz has 2-for-2 in bowl games with Tulane, but this is something different. This would be a big game and a big moment for the program considering the location and the uniqueness of the game.

Nevada was humming. It was looking like the Mountain West’s best team with a 5-0 start, and then came the tough loss at Hawaii, and the after beating Fresno State, a 30-20 loss to eventual conference champ San Jose State. Head coach Jay Norvell is 1-1 in bowl games – losing last year’s Famous Idaho Potato Bowl to Ohio.

These are two fun teams. Nevada can wing the ball all over the place, Tulane has a dangerous ground game, and both teams will get things moving. However, this could get interesting depending on the weather. It’s supposed to be okay by kickoff, but cold. It’s going to snow in the morning, but for a team from New Orleans, 30ish degrees could be an issue.

Ohio players gave their coach a french fry bath after Famous Idaho Potato Bowl win

“I will take those potatoes any time,” Ohio coach Frank Solich said.

Who needs a Gatorade bath when you have a bucket of french fries? That’s what Ohio football coach Frank Solich was “doused” with following the Bobcats’ 30-21 win over Nevada on Friday in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.

Despite the Wolf Pack’s comeback attempt with 12 unanswered points in the fourth quarter, Ohio held on for the win to finish the season with a 7-6 record. Bobcats quarterback Nathan Rourke went 9-for-17 for 144 yards, along with 87 rushing yards and a touchdown. Running backs De’Montre Tuggle and Julian Ross each ran for a touchdown and finished with 97 and 57 rushing yards, respectively.

And with about 30 seconds left as Ohio prepared to take its final knee of the game, players dumped a Gatorade jug of french fries on Solich, who did exactly what you’re supposed to do in that situation and ate one.

Solich said afterward, via ASAP Sports:

“No idea where they came from. I did get one and ate it. Very good. I’m sure it’s an Idaho potato, you know.

“That’s a lot better than water on you. Over the course of the years, I’ve had some water on me. I will take those potatoes any time.”

Kent State celebrated its Tropical Smoothie Cafe Frisco Bowl win with a smoothie bath, Arizona State gave Herm Edwards a Frosted Flakes bath after winning the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl and, of course, there were plenty of traditional Gatorade baths all around. But Ohio’s french fry bath has to be the best this season.

The video of it is great and all, but the photos capturing the moment frame by frame are even better. So here’s a look at Solich getting covered in french fries in nine awesome photos.

WATCH: Ohio’s Frank Solich gets french fry bath after Famous Idaho Potato Bowl

Frank Solich was bathed in french fries after Ohio won the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.

Bowl season is giving new meanings to baths coaches get after their school is victorious. First, Herman Edwards was showered with Frosted Flakes after Arizona State won the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl. And, now, we have 75-year-old Frank Solich being doused with french fries, of course, following Ohio’s win over Nevada Friday in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.

Have to think there are plenty of companies that will see this as an opportunity. The Olive Garden Pasta Bowl for starters sounds like a great and awful idea all at once. The Campbell’s Souper Bowl? A Starbucks Bowl or a Carvel Bowl could get sticky.

Famous Idaho Potato Bowl: Ohio vs. Nevada odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Friday’s Famous Idaho Potato Bowl between the Ohio Bobcats and Nevada Wolf Pack, with NCAA football betting odds, picks and bets.

The Ohio Bobcats (6-6) and Nevada Wolf Pack (7-5) will do battle at the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl Friday, played at Albertsons Stadium in Boise. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET (on ESPN). We analyze the Ohio-Nevada odds and betting lines, while providing college football betting tips and advice on this matchup.

Ohio vs. Nevada: Three things you need to know

1. Ohio won its final two games by a combined score of 118-27 to become bowl eligible, covering a pair of spreads of at least 21 points. However, the Bobcats were just 2-5 straight up and 1-6 against the spread in seven games against bowl teams this season.

2. Nevada was annihilated 77-6 Sept. 7 at Oregon, and it was trounced 54-3 at home by Hawaii Sept. 28. The Wolf Pack have been on the short end of four losses by 28 or more points this season, but they also had a signature road win over a 10-win San Diego State side.

3. The Bobcats are 2-7 ATS across their past nine as a favorite, although they’re 4-0 ATS in their past four bowl games. The Wolf Pack are 3-1-1 ATS in their past five bowl appearances and 3-0-1 ATS in the past four neutral-site games as a road dog.

Prediction

Ohio 36, Nevada 30

Moneyline (ML)

Ohio (-304) will cost you over three times the potential reward, and it’s just not worth it, especially in a potentially close game. PASS and look to the spread instead.

Against the Spread (ATS)

NEVADA (+7.5, -106) is a good play, and it might have more support with a closer proximity to a majority of its fan base. Don’t underestimate that. The struggles of Ohio (-7.5, -115) against bowl teams is worrisome. I think the Bobcats will still win this game, but I don’t think it will be decided by more than one possession.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 59.5 (-106) is the way to go, cashing in 11 of the past 15 non-conference tilts for the Bobcats, and five of their past seven against bowl teams. The Over is 5-1 in their past six as a favorite, too. The Over is 5-2 in the past seven outside the conference, but the Under is 6-1 in Nevada’s past seven bowl outings.
