Conner Weigman leads the country in Total QBR after Texas A&M’s 52-10 romp over New Mexico

After throwing for five touchdowns in Texas A&M’s 52-10 win over New Mexico, QB Conner Weigman now leads the country in Total QBR

Texas A&M opened the 2023 season on the highest of notes, routing the visiting New Mexico Lobos to the tune of 52-10 behind starting quarterback Conner Weigman’s five-touchdown performance, aided by two touchdowns to start wideout Evan Stewart and three touchdown receptions from sophomore wide receiver Noah Thomas, who has already solidified himself as a breakout candidate for the rest of the 2023 slate.

Focusing on Weigman, whose notable confidence and swagger, coupled with the strides made in his development in the pocket, led to an efficient 18/23, 236-yard stat line, while his five touchdowns were the most by a Texas A&M quarterback in a season opener.

As of Sunday, after most of the week one games have been played, Weigman now leads the entire country in Total QBR at 97.2, leading Notre Dame’s Sam Hartman and Oklahoma’s Dillon Gabriel.

Weigman’s ascendance as a certified stud signal-caller is based on an impressive team effort, first, by the Aggies’ improved offensive line, which gave him plenty of time to work through this progressions while having one of the best wide receiver units in the country getting open on nearly every snap for catches near the hash, on the boundary, and of course, the deep shot which was really utilized throughout the night.

Conner Weigman’s play has already raised lofty expectations for the Maroon and White this season; after last night’s performance and potential moving forward, nothing is out of reach for Jimbo Fisher’s squad in 2023.

Texas A&M will travel to Miami, Florida, to face the Miami Hurricanes on Saturday, Sept. 9, which will air on ABC at 2:30 p.m. CT.

Best Photos: Texas A&M 52-10 victory over the New Mexico Lobos

Bes photos from the Aggies 52-10 win over the New Mexico Lobos

Texas A&M looked like a team that should be ranked in the top 25 in the country after downing the New Mexico Lobos on Saturday night. Many questions were answered after the clock struck triple zeros, from how the lines would hold up on both sides of the ball to how Bobby Petrino’s offense would look different than what we saw last season.

The offense put up over 400 total yards and 52 points is just scratching the surface and truly will be a top SEC offense by year’s end. However, it wasn’t pretty all game long for the Aggies. As dominant as the offense was, there is still some meat on the bone regarding the running game. The defense started off a little shaky, with the ghost of last year’s run defense early in the game. They eventually settled in to hold them under 100 yards running with a 2.8 average.

Texas A&M will travel to Florida in a week two match up against a Miami team with something out to prove. This will be a great benchmark game to see where the improvements need to be made before the start of SEC play.

Five takeaways from Texas A&M’s dominant 52-10 win over New Mexico

Like any good football program should, the Aggies throttled New Mexico in a 52-10 win. Here are five takeaways from Texas A&M’s victory over the Lobos.

No. 23 Texas A&M (1-0) showed that they were ready to destroy the memories of 2022 with a dominant 52-10 victory over New Mexico in Week 1. As head coach Jimbo Fisher aptly noted leading up to the game, it was “put up or shut up,” and suffice it to say the Aggies made a statement on Saturday night.

From an explosive offensive performance to some bright spots on the defensive side of the ball, there was no shortage of promising takeaways for the rest of the season.

Texas A&M’s offense, which was rightfully scorned for its 101st ranking in 2022, looked like a far cry from what we saw a year ago. Conner Wegiman came out firing early with most of his passes, and touchdown throws, coming between the hash and the boundary, or deep.

Whether it was by design or it was done to allow Weigman to be himself, that level of aggressiveness had not been seen in quite some time.

Of course, enough cannot be said for the game that Noah Thomas had. The sophomore receiver entered the 2023 season on the breakout player watchlist, and if you haven’t bought your stock on him, well, Saturday’s performance proves why you should. The defense was largely functional in holding the Lobos to 10 points, and a key transfer addition proved to be the most impactful player on that side of the ball Saturday evening.

For the first time this season, here are five takeaways from Texas A&M’s dominant 52-10 win over New Mexico.

Social media reacts: Conner Weigman finds Noah Thomas, Evan Stewart to put Aggies up early

This isn’t 2022 anymore! Texas A&M’s revamped offense was on full display with Conner Weigman finding Noah Thomas and Evan Stewart for two early touchdown throws.

Texas A&M brought in Bobby Petrino to inject some much-needed ingenuity into a stagnant offense from a season ago. Through two-quarters of football, it’s clear this Aggies offense is a far cry from what we saw in 2022.

Newly crowned starting quarterback Conner Weigman got hot early with a beautiful red zone touchdown to sophomore Noah Thomas, highlighting what should be a brewing connection to watch for this season. Not long after, Weigman found star receiver Evan Stewart for a 35-yard touchdown pass to hit him in stride and put the Aggies up 14-0 early.

It may be a small sample size, but it speaks volumes nonetheless about how this Texas A&M team is ready to roll on the offensive side of the ball, and equipped to turn what was once a weakness, into a strength.

Weigman followed up his first touchdown throw by hitting Evan Stewart in stride to start off the second quarter.

Here are the best social media reactions to Weigman putting Texas A&M up 14-0 early in the season opener.

Five reasons why Texas A&M will beat New Mexico in Week 1

While Texas A&M must execute on their keys to victory, they’ll have more than a handful of traits leaning in their favor. Here are the five reasons why the Aggies will beat New Mexico.

A mere 24 hours separates Texas A&M football fans from the first action of the season as the Aggies welcome New Mexico to Kyle Field. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. CT, and as the Maroon and White prepare for the Lobos they enter as heavy favorites in this showdown.

Both of these programs enter with heightened expectations after their respective underwhelming 2022 campaigns. New Mexico head coach Danny Gonzales is entering his fourth year with the Lobos, but he could be on the early hot seat following two straight seasons of finishing last in the conference in scoring.

Of course, we remember all too well last year’s 5-7 (2-6 SEC) debacle from the Aggies, which gives head coach Jimbo Fisher and this program a pivotal 2023 season to embark on.

A win in Week 1 would be a convincing statement for either team, but when looking at the talent on paper and what to expect from each program, it should be Texas A&M walking away with a 1-0 record. Of course, they’ll need to execute their keys to victory, but nonetheless, they have more than a handful of traits leaning in their favor.

From a new offensive look which should be a far cry from what was on display last year, to a fearsome group at both wide receiver and defensive line, the Aggies should have the advantage when it comes to talent as well as scheme. They should not overlook any opponent on their slate, but handily beating the Lobos is the right way to set the tone for this season.

Here are the five reasons why Texas A&M should beat New Mexico in their 2023 Week 1 opener.

Texas A&M 2023 college football season countdown: No. 1 Evan Stewart

After a promising freshman season, Evan Stewart could be in for an outstanding 2023 campaign that will make him one of the top talents in the SEC.

Fear not, Aggie fans, meaningful college football is just around the corner, with the start of the 2023 season just 24 hours away! Here at Aggies Wire, we’ll be counting down by looking at each Texas A&M football player that corresponds to the number of days left till the start of the football season.

With one day until kickoff, we’re looking at No. 1 for the Maroon and White: sophomore wide receiver Evan Stewart.

Stewart returns after a promising 2022 campaign as the starting X receiver. He logged 53 receptions, 649 yards, and two touchdowns in 10 games as a true freshman last season and flashed why he was a top-10 recruit of the 2022 cycle. Suffice it to say that the five-star talent out of Frisco Liberty arrived in College Station with high expectations, and he did not disappoint when he took the field.

He led the Aggies in both receptions and yards last season and established himself as one of the top-tier receivers in the SEC in just year one. On the against Alabama, he tallied eight receptions for 106 yards with an average of 13.3 yards per reception. Just a few weeks later he finished with eight catches for a season-best 120 yards against Florida, further solidifying himself as a rising star.

What’s even scarier for opposing defenses, and conversely a delight to Texas A&M fans, is that Stewart hasn’t yet reached his fullest potential. As an already exceptional athlete with an absurd ceiling, 2023 could be the year in which he puts every facet of his game together. From his hyper-athletic build to his dynamic track and field attributes, and finally to his elite receiver skills, when the season is all said and done Stewart should be regarded as one of the top talents overall in the SEC.

Bobby Petrino advocated that the motto for the offense is, “feed the studs,” and much like the number on his jersey, Stewart should be number one when it comes to the high-profile talent on the roster.

Five players to watch in Texas A&M’s season opener vs. New Mexico

Texas A&M will kick off its 2023 rebound campaign against New Mexico, and these are the five players to keep on eye ahead of Saturday’s season opener

No more off-season hot takes and preseason “way-too-early” predictions; it’s time for real, meaningful college football! Texas A&M will jumpstart its critical rebound campaign against New Mexico on Saturday, Sep. 2, from Kyle Field in College Station.

Throughout the week, we at Aggies Wire have done our best to prepare you for the 2023 season opener. After providing the five storylines to look for on Saturday night, it’s time to shift focus on the five players who need to make an immediate impact to get the season off on the right foot and develop consistency before heading into SEC play.

While outside media will continue to focus on new OC Bobby Petrino’s new play-calling duties and impact on the offense, which, let’s be honest, folks, it will likely take some time to see the effect, the players on the field will always dictate the result.

Combining a mix of offensive and defensive playmakers, every player listed experienced the disastrous 5-7 2022 season in its entirety. After a productive fall camp, it’s time to finally kick things in high gear and prove that last season was just a blip on the radar.

Here are the five players to watch during Texas A&M’s season opener vs. New Mexico on Saturday, Sept. 2, which will air on ESPN at 6:00 p.m. CT.

247Sports ranks Texas A&M as one of the 10 most talented teams in college football

According to 247Sports’ Team Talent Composite, Texas A&M is ranked as one of the Top 10 most talented teams in the country

Week one of the 2023 college football season begins on Thursday night, as Florida hits the road to face Utah for their highly anticipated rematch after the then Anthony Richardson-led Gators downed the Utes in prime time last season, while Texas A&M is set to embark on their pivotal 2023 rebound campaign, starting against New Mexico inside Kyle Field on Saturday night.

From a talent perspective, the Aggies are one of the richest programs in the country, as a bulk of their historic 2022 recruiting class will return for the respective sophomore seasons after enduring a “baptism by fire” roller-coaster ride in 2022 led by the return of starting quarterback Conner Weigman, and star wide receiver Evan Stewart.

Not to discount the Aggies’ 2023 recruiting class, where three notable freshmen such as offensive tackle Chase Bisontis, running back Reuben Owens, and cornerback Jayvon Thomas, are slated to receive a ton of snaps in 2023, while Thomas may have solidified the starting spot opposite junior cornerback Tyreek Chappell.

Experience-wise, several key veterans, including Ainias Smith (WR), Demani Richardson (S), McKinnley Jackson (DL), and Layden Robinson (OG), return as proven leaders on the field, especially in the locker room where such voices consistently lacked last season.

On Wednesday, 247Sports revealed their Top 10 program list based on their Team Talent Composite rankings model, compiling the most talented programs in the country based on a points scale, and described as:

“A metric that examines and ranks every FBS team — accounting for transfers, dismissals and other early departures — based on how their players were rated in high school.”

Four current SEC programs, including Texas A&M, and two future members unsurprisingly made the list, while four other blue blood programs finished out the rankings. Where did the Aggies land? Here are the complete Top 10 rankings.

Six Aggie football players named to the Preseason Coaches All-SEC Team

Ahead of Texas A&M’s 2023 Sept. 2 season opener, six Aggie football players have made the Preseason Coaches All-SEC Team.

Texas A&M’s 2023 Sept. 2 season opener vs. New Mexico is less than two weeks away. After a very successful fall camp with several key storylines coming out of their new luxurious Coolidge Football Performance Center, the quarterback battle between sophomore Conner Weigman and veteran Max Johnson has continued to dominate the headlines, but no worries; an answer is upon us.

Entering the 2023 campaign, the Aggies roster is scattered with elite talent and proven experience, leading to six Texas A&M players being selected to the Preseason Coaches All-SEC Team, including wide receiver Ainias Smith, punter Nik Constantinou, strong safety Demani Richardson, defensive tackle McKinnley Jackson, wide receiver Evan Stewart, and right guard Layden Robinson. Here is each player’s respective team selection

  • Ainias Smith: first-team all-purpose player, second-team return specialist, and third-team wide receiver
  • Nik Constantinou: second-team punter
  • Demani Richardson: second-team defensive back
  • McKinnley Jackson: second-team defensive tackle
  • Evan Stewart: second-team wide receiver
  • Layden Robinson: third-team offensive lineman

All six players, especially the wide receiver duo of Smith and Stewart, will be depended on to steer the ship late in games ultimately. At the same time, McKinnley Jackson’s vast experience in the defensive trenches and Demani Richardson’s leadership in the defensive backfield will ultimately set the tone for a deep and talented unit looking to take the next step in 2023.

247Sports ranks Aggies WR Evan Stewart as a Top 100 player ahead of the 2023 season

Entering his pivotal sophomore campaign, Texas A&M WR Evan Stewart has been included in 247Sports’ “top 100 players for 2023.”

It’s been a weird offseason for Texas A&M star wide receiver Evan Stewart, who is entering his pivotal sophomore season with the program after leading the Aggies in receiving yards (649) during the disappointing 5-7 2022 campaign.

Coming into College Station as one of the highest-ranked recruits in Texas A&M history as a member of the historic 2022 recruiting class, Stewart’s blend of speed, quickness, exceptional route running, and incredibly soft hands at the catch point has bolted his current ceiling as a future first-round NFL draft pick, especially after adding new offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino into the mix for the 2023 season and (potentially) beyond.

After receiving little love from multiple outlets‘ wide receiver rankings this summer, 247Sports writer Blake Brockermeyer released his top 100 players rankings ahead of the 2023 season; Stewart, coming in as the only ranked Aggie, was placed at No. 35, and the fifth-ranked wide receiver. Here’s what Brockermeyer had to say on Stewart’s inclusion:

“After an impressive freshman campaign, the former top-10 recruit looks to put it all together in 2023. Exceptional athlete with a ridiculous ceiling.”

Apparent to most, Texas A&M’s starting wide receiver rotation is borderline elite, as Evan Stewart, Ainias Smith, Moose Muhammad III, and Spring MVP Noah Thomas still have much to prove on the field from the point of consistency. Still, one thing is clear: Whether it’s Conner Weigman or Max Johnson throwing the ball to this exceptional group, Evan Stewart’s ability to stretch the field will open up the offense and let the likes of Smith, Muhammad, and Thomas wreck opposing defenses week to week.
