Ex-Boston Celtics big man Juancho Hernangomez gets 13 points, 7 boards vs. Bulgaria with Spain

It was a generally efficient night for the Spaniard, who only fouled once and did not turn the ball over in this game.

Former Boston Celtics big man Juancho Hernangomez helped drive his Spanish National Team to a 114-87 blowout of the Bulgarian National Team on Thursday on day one of EuroBasket action. The star of the Netflix documentary “Hustle” looked much the part of Bo Cruz, his rising star Spanish prospect, in the win, putting up a solid 13 points, 7 rebounds, and an assist in just under 21 minutes of floor time against Hungary.

The former Celtics forward shot a solid 5-of-1o from the field overall, including going 2-of-5 from beyond the arc and hitting his single attempt from the charity stripe.

It was a generally efficient night for the Spaniard, who only fouled once and did not turn the ball over in this game.

The onetime Boston big man played for the Celtics for 18 games of the 2021-22 NBA season before being dealt to the San Antonio Spurs in a three-team deal, and averaged 1.1 points and 1.4 rebounds per game with Boston.

2022 Eurobasket: Top 15 players in the tournament

HoopsHype previews the exciting upcoming 2022 Eurobasket tournament by ranking the Top 15 players participating.

The 2022 Eurobasket tournament is going to be the most exciting non-NBA basketball event in quite some time, with arguably the three favorites for 2022-23 NBA MVP honors participating, along with a slew of other high-level players in the event.

Some of the other players taking part in the tournament, by the way, may not be NBA stars, but they elevate their play to a great extent in FIBA competition.

To help preview the exciting showcase, we decided to rank the Top 15 players in the tournament, arguably the 15 likeliest men to win best-of-the-tournament honors when all is said and done.

This was voted upon by a panel of our writers and editors so without further ado, let’s get right into the action.

Highlights, live streams: Tracking Alperen Sengun and Usman Garuba at EuroBasket 2022

Rockets prospects Alperen Sengun (Turkey) and Usman Garuba (Spain) are playing this week at EuroBasket 2022. Here’s how to watch and our look at how they’re faring.

Training camp for the Houston Rockets doesn’t begin until late September, and the 2022-23 regular season won’t get underway until mid-October. But for at least two of the rebuilding club’s promising young players, the competitive games will start much earlier.

Alperen Sengun and Usman Garuba, selected by the Rockets in the first round of the 2021 NBA draft, are competing for Turkey and Spain, respectively, in the European Basketball Championship. EuroBasket, as it is best known, tips off on Thursday, Sept. 1.

While most EuroBasket games won’t be shown on over-the-air television in the United States, live streams are available. For those unable to catch the action live, Rockets fans and media will clip many of the highlights (or lowlights) involving Sengun and Garuba.

With that in mind, scroll on for a daily schedule and streaming links for Sengun and Garuba’s games. When completed, each day’s section will also be updated with relevant highlights and statistics.

Schedules beyond Sept. 7 have yet to be determined, since they depend on results from the initial group stage games.

Former Boston big man Daniel Theis makes German National Team for EuroBasket play

The former Celtics center was a late call due to injury concerns.

Daniel Theis was initially feared by Germany to be out for the quadrennial EuroBasket competition taking place in four locations across Europe. However, the former Boston Celtics big man has been cleared at the last minute, according to new reporting from Eurohoops.

Theis joins a fairly stacked German team that includes former Celtic Dennis Schroder and Orlando Magic forward Franz Wagner. Magic big man Moritz Wagner — another former Celtic — did not make the team.

Per Eurohoops, Germany has one more player to cut, but it seems fairly likely neither Schroder or Theis will be that player, health willing.

Slated to complete in Group B for EuroBasket play in Cologne, Germany, Theis and the rest of the German team are in one of the toughest groups. The group contains defending EuroBasket champion Slovenia, Olympic silver medalist France, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Lithuania and Hungary in addition to Germany.

How much does the loss of veteran forward Danilo Gallinari impact the Boston Celtics?

How much does the loss of veteran forward Danilo Gallinari impact the Boston Celtics? The Celtics swingman hurt his knee by tearing his meniscus on a noncontact play late in a win of his Italian National Team over the Georgian National Team in FIBA qualifier play last weekend.

And while it might seem odd to say this is a comparatively good thing given he might have had a second torn left ACL that could easily have ended his NBA career, it will leave Boston without Gallinari for at least the entirety of training camp and the first few weeks of the 2022-23 NBA regular season.

Where does that leave the Celtics for the season to come? The hosts of the NBC Sports Boston “The Daily Thread” show talk it over on a recent episode.

Watch the clip embedded above to hear what Amina Smith, Chris Forsberg, and John Tomase all have to say about the impact of losing Gallo to the team.
