Ex-Boston big man Guerschon Yabusele leads France to 84-78 win over Hungary in EuroBasket play

The French National Team eked out a close win with help from three former Celtics.

Three former Boston Celtics players helped push the French National Team to a hard-fought, 84-78, win over the Hungarian National Team in EuroBasket play on Sunday afternoon. Chief among the trio was the player taken 16th in the 2016 NBA draft, Guerschon Yabusele, who put up 17 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists.

Ex-Celtics shooting guard Evan Fournier added 12 points, a board, 5 assists and 2 steals. Former Celtics center Vincent Poirier chipped in another 10 points and 5 rebounds to help secure the victory.

“I think it was a quite difficult game; we’ve got a very good start. Unfortunately, we went down very quickly,” said French head coach Vincent Collet after the game via Eurhoops.

“We’re missing the fundamentals and the enthusiasm: that is what hurts me the most from this game,” added Collet.

“They played with a lot of heart until the last second. We had a few moments in which we were unfocused,” offered Collet. “We’ve got to keep working hard to make sure that we get better and it doesn’t happen again.”

Boston alum Shane Larkin has off night as his Turkey falls to Georgia 88-83 in double overtime

The former Celtics reserve floor general had trouble shooting the ball in EuroBasket play Sunday, and it cost Turkey the game.

Former Boston Celtics floor general Shane Larkin had an egregiously bad shooting day while manning the point for the Turkish National Team on Sunday afternoon. Turkey fell 88-83 to the Georgian National Team in double overtime in part due to the former Miami player’s difficulties putting the proverbial biscuit in the basket.

Larkin put up 9 points, 8 boards, 7 assists and a steal in a game that seemed like nothing was going right for the former Boston point guard. While he did not pick up any personal fouls in the painful loss marred by a fight between teammate Furkan Korkmaz and three Georgian players, Larkin shot 2-of-14 from the field overall and 2-of-10 from 3-point range.

The former Celtic was on the floor for 48:54 of 50 possible minutes of the double-overtime affair.

Trio of Boston Celtics among HoopsHype’s best NBA players at EuroBasket

There is no shortage of Boston Celtics alumni among those NBAers taking part in FIBA play around the globe.

While you can’t see NBA basketball early in the month of September all too often outside of the random pandemic-interrupted season, you can see NBA basketball players playing ball, most of which happen to be taking part of late in FIBA competitions like the EuroBasket and AmeriCup competitions.

They are, of course, among if not always the best players on their respective National Teams, and there is no shortage of Boston Celtics alumni among those NBAers taking part in FIBA play around the globe. And according to a recent assessment done by the folks over at HoopsHype, there are a handful of Celtics alumni among the best NBA players at the EuroBasket.

Let’s take a look at which alumni they are — and where they rate in H/H’s estimation.

Spain falls to Belgium 83-73 despite 11 points from Boston Celtics alum Juancho Hernangomez

Even Bo Cruz couldn’t save Spain from themselves today.

Former Boston Celtics big man Juancho “Bo Cruz” Hernangomez did his best to push the Spanish National Team to a win in EuroBasket play on Sunday, but Spain fell 83-73 to a determined Belgian National Team despite the efforts of the star of the Netflix “Hustle” film to prevent it.

The Celtics alum put up 11 points, 3 rebounds, an assist, and as many steals in just under 26 minutes of floor time on his way to picking up just 1 personal foul and turning the ball over 0 times. The Madrid native managed to shoot an efficient 50% from the floor overall, 40% from 3-point range, and 75% from the free throw line in the loss.

“When we go above and beyond to the limits of our energy we can be a good team,” said Spanish National Team head coach Sergio Scariolo via Eurohoops.

“When we don’t, like tonight, we are not. We know that our fuel comes from our defense.”

Former Boston Celtics duo carry Germany to 109-107 win over Lithuania in double OT in EuroBasket play

Germany’s chemistry and Celtics alumni continue to fuel their EuroBasket success.

Two former Boston Celtics were instrumental to the German National Team’s 109-107 double-overtime victory over the Lithuanian National Team in EuroBasket play on Sunday.

Germany received an outstanding game from former Celtics floor general Dennis Schroder, who put up 25 points, 5 rebounds, 8 assists and a steal in just over 40 minutes of floor time.

Schroder shot just 37% from the field, 20% from deep and 75% from the line. He committed four turnovers and four fouls in one of his less efficient games in recent international play, but he found other ways to help his team.

Ex-Boston big man Daniel Theis added another 11 points, 5 boards and 2 assists in 22:21 minutes of play, making up for Schroder’s yips with 55.6% shooting from the floor, 33.3% from 3-point range and no personal fouls or turnovers.

Bojan Bogdanovic is in a reflective mood. Understandably so. Croatia’s tower of strength declares that FIBA EuroBasket 2022 will be the end of the line for his international career. Not an irrevocable call, of course. Always time for a change of heart, albeit he is now 33 old and it’s been a dozen summers since he made his debut as a fledgling star at FIBA Basketball World Cup 2010, in Turkey.

Don’t see any of the future Jazz castoffs landing in Denver. Bojan Bogdanovic helps the bench, but Nuggets don’t have the salary to send back. Same with Mike Conley, plus he’s not really a fit. Jordan Clarkson, not right now. Jarred Vanderbilt, Zeke Nnaji’s in that rotation spot. – 1:05 PM

Croatia comes up short against Greece, 89-85.

Since people are asking about Celtics trade ideas:
-No reasonable way to match salary for Bojan Bogdanovic

More on this storyline

Legacy, for the Utah Jazz guard, has acquired an importance. “I would like to leave something behind me,” he reveals. “So this EuroBasket is a perfect chance for me and my teammates to do something special. It’s going to be pretty hard. I’m trying to help my young teammates to grow pretty quickly – and to make an impact on the game, right here, at this tournament.” -via FIBA / September 4, 2022
“We all know who Toni and Drazen are. We have talked here about how Dirk Nowitzki is one of the best European players Drazen is there as well. “So just trying to fit in their shoes with all medals that they won is really pretty tough for us. But we have got a really good young generation that is coming right now with (Ivica) Zubac, (Dario) Saric and a couple other young guys. So I hope they’re going to do something special as well.” -via FIBA / September 4, 2022
Jeff Zillgitt: The Lakers have some interest, I’m told, in the Jazz vets who could be traded (Mike Conley, Jordan Clarkson, Bojan Bogdanovic). But the Lakers also want to preserve cap space for next summer and aren’t that interested in taking contracts beyond 2022-23. Bogdanovic on expiring. -via Twitter @JeffZillgitt / September 2, 2022
