On this day: Mo Mahoney debut; E’Twaun Moore, James Blackwell born

On this day in Celtics history, Mo Mahoney made his debut for Boston, and James Blackwell and E’Twaun Moore were born.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, former Celtic forward Francis H. “Mo” Mahoney made his debut for the team in an 87-80 win over the (then) Philadelphia (now, Golden State) Warriors at the old Boston Garden in 1953.

Mahoney was picked up of Rhode Island’s Brown University by the Celtics in the 1950 NBA draft. He spent the next two years serving in the US armed forces in the Korean War before finally playing his first game for the team that drafted him, three years after the fact. The Brooklyn native scored a single point and picked as many fouls in his debut with the Celtics.

He would go on to average 2 points and 1.2 rebounds per game over 6 games with the franchise.

Every player in Boston Celtics history who wore No. 55

This is every player in Boston’s history who wore the Celtics’ No. 55 jersey for at least one game as of Aug. 2023.

The Boston Celtics have more retired jerseys than any other team in the NBA, but that doesn’t mean the rest of their jerseys have little history of interest tied to them.

In fact, with 17 titles to their name and decades of competitive basketball played in them, their unretired jersey numbers pack in some of the most history not hanging from the rafters of any team in the league. To that end, we have launched our accounting of that history, with every player in every jersey worn by more than one Celtics player in the storied franchise’s history accounted for.

Today’s installment focuses on the 13 players who wore No. 55 over the years as of Aug. 2023.

On this day: Ray Allen born; Theis, Yabu, Wesley signed; Moore dealt; Waldron passes

On this day, ex-Celtic champ Ray Allen was born, Daniel Theis, Guerschon Yabusele, Davis Wesley signed, and E’Twaun Moore was traded.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, champion Celtics sharpshooter Ray Allen was born in Merced, California. A military kid, Allen “grew up” in a lot of places, but would graduate high school in Dalzell, South Carolina. He attended the University of Connecticut for college, where he won Big East and UPI Player of the Year awards in 1996 during his time with the Huskies.

He would end up being drafted fifth overall in the 1996 NBA draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves, but was quickly dealt to the Milwaukee Bucks in a draft-night trade, and would remain in Milwaukee for parts of seven seasons.

He would also play for the Seattle Supersonics for 5 campaigns before being dealt to the Celtics in the summer of 2007.

On this day: McHale, Embry, Thompson inducted; Brown, Moore drafted

On this day, Kevin McHale, Wayne Embry, and John Thompson were inducted into the Hall of Fame, and Jaylen Brown and E’Twaun Moore were drafted.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, franchise legends Kevin McHale, Wayne Embry, and John Thompson were inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts. McHale had been drafted by the Celtics out of the University of Minnesota with the third overall pick of the 1980 NBA draft.

That deal for that pick, which Boston had acquired along with big man Robert Parish in exchange for the top overall pick of that draft, was widely considered to be one of the most lopsided deals in league history. McHale would have an immediate impact on the young core being built around forward phenomenon Larry Bird.

Along with Parish, forward Cedric Maxwell, point guard Dennis Johnson and shooting guard Danny Ainge, the Celtics would form a dynasty he would win three championships with in the 1980s.

Seven Boston Celtics changing places in 2011 redraft

As has been the case in past iterations of the exercise, the authors have reassessed a number of alumni of the Boston Celtics.

As has been their wont in recent weeks, the NBA analysts over at our sister site of Hoops Hype have been re-drafting each season of the recent history of the NBA to get each year’s big event “the way it should have been,” most recently putting their analytical expertise to work on doing the 2011 NBA draft over again with the benefit of hindsight.

A draft they have suggested has been underrated with as many as four future Hall of Famers within it, they do their best to right the wrongs of the general managers of that time. And as has been the case in past iterations of the exercise, the authors ( Frank Urbina and Raul Barrigon) have reassessed a number of alumni of the Boston Celtics.

Let’s see where Celtics alumni got taken in this redux.
