Chiefs playoff win over Bills up for ‘Best Game’ at 2022 ESPYS

The #Chiefs’ iconic overtime win over the #Bills in the divisional round of the playoffs has been nominated for an award at the 2022 ESPYS in July.

One of the most talked-about Kansas City Chiefs games from last postseason is up for an award at the 2022 ESPYS.

The Chiefs’ overtime win over the Buffalo Bills in the divisional round has been nominated for the “Best Game” award at the ESPYS. This shouldn’t come as a surprise, given that many believe it was one of the best and most memorable football games they’d ever seen.

It featured a ton of action-packed moments, but the ending of the game was something to behold for Kansas City. In just 13 seconds, Patrick Mahomes, Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce marched down the field to put Harrison Butker in range to tie the game up and force overtime. From there the coin flip decided the fate of the Buffalo Bills. The game was so iconic that the NFL even went on to change overtime rules during the playoffs so that both teams get a possession.

The Chiefs have some stout competition in this category, with the other nominees as follows:

  • UConn defeats NC State in double OT (Elite 8 NCAA Women’s Basketball)
  • Kansas’ 16-point rally, which was the biggest comeback in championship game history (NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship)
  • Bryce Young rallies Alabama to beat Auburn in four OTs (NCAA Football Iron Bowl)

Fans are able to cast their vote now over on ESPN.com. You can watch the ESPYS on Wednesday, July 20TH at 7:00 p.m. CT on ABC.

Vitali Klitschko to be honored with ESPN’s courage award

Vitali Klitschko will receive the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage at the ESPYs next month.

This is one honor for which former heavyweight champ Vitali Klitschko wishes he didn’t qualify.

ESPN has announced that the mayor of Kyiv, Ukraine will receive the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage at the 2022 ESPYS on July 20 (ABC) in the wake of Russia’s invasion of his country – including Kyiv — in February.

The award, as described by ESPN, “is given to a deserving member of the sporting world who makes a difference far beyond the field of play, impacting the world in indelible ways.”

Klitschko certainly has done that, risking his life by serving as a key figure in Ukraine’s resistance against one of the strongest militaries in the world. His brother, Wladimir Klitschko, has stayed by his side.

Vitali Klitschko has been mayor Kyiv since 2014.

“Vitali’s poise and strength as his city and country faces unfathomable tests have far surpassed the incredible resolve he demonstrated as one of boxing’s top heavyweight champions,” said Executive Editor-At-Large ESPN Content Rob King.

“His commitment to the people of Ukraine has been a global inspiration, and his bravery is a prime example of the resilience of the human spirit. It is our privilege to bestow him with the Arthur Ashe Courage Award.”

Klitschko said the award should extend to all of his countrymen.

“It is a great honor for me to receive this award,” he said. “I am convinced that this is a recognition of the courage and inviolability of the Ukrainian people, who have been bravely resisting the Russian aggressor for more than three months. This is an award for everyone who defends the independence and freedom of Ukraine.”

WATCH: Chiefs TE Travis Kelce stars in Aaron Rodgers comedy skit at ESPYs

#Chiefs TE Travis Kelce appeared in a comedy sketch at the ESPYs last night discussing trade rumors surrounding #Packers QB Aaron Rodgers | from @EdEastonJr

The Kansas City Chiefs were well-represented at last night’s ESPY awards show.

The big winner of the night was Chiefs OL Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, being awarded the Muhammad Ali Sports Humanitarian Award for his outstanding service during the COVID-19 academic.

The other moment involving the Chiefs came via a comedy sketch, making fun of constant trade rumors surrounding Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers this offseason. The NFL’s reigning league MVP is rumored to want out of Green Bay since April, and the speculation inspired a skit featuring several players and celebrities. Among the players ready to chime in with their opinions was Chiefs All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce, who provided a hilarious scenario.

“Check this out: Aaron Rodgers — Brett Favre’s backup,” Kelce said in the skit. “‘Back Dat Ass Up’ — one of my favorite songs by rapper Juvenile. Juvenile’s real name — Terius Gray — which rhyme’s with (Sean) McVay. Boom! [He’s] going to the Rams. It’s so easy. . . (Matt) Stafford is going to be pissed, but he’s going to the Rams.”

Kelce seemed to record his bit from the American Century Championship,  where he and several other notable stars are gathering to play golf this weekend. Others to participate in the sketch include ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry, Bucs QB Tom Brady, Singer Justin Timberlake, Comedian Rob Riggle, and Broadcaster Joe Buck. You can watch the full skit above.

There isn’t much hard evidence to support Kelce’s masterful detective work on a potential trade destination for Rodgers. However, after the incredible 2020 season that Rodgers had, anything possible.

Alabama Football well represents the SEC in ESPY Nominations

The annual ESPY Awards return for 2021, and this year, Alabama Football has a handful of representation.

The annual ESPY Awards return for 2021, and this year, Alabama Football has a handful of representation.

The 2020 team grabs three nominations, while former Tide star Derrick Henry is up for an award as a member of the Tennessee Titans, ESPN announced Wednesday.

Wide Receiver and Heisman Trophy winner Devonta Smith leads the way in nominations with two. Smith is up for Best College Athlete for Men’s Sports. He will compete against Iowa Basketball’s Luke Garza, Gloire Amanda from Oregon State soccer, and Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Smith had 117 catches for 1,856 yards and 23 touchdowns in 2020.

Smith also is nominated for Best  Record-Breaking Performance after setting records for title game against Ohio State in catches (12) and touchdown receptions (three), and also totaled 215 yards. Alabama won, 52–24, their sixth title in 12 years, while Smith was named Offensive MVP of the championship game.

Speaking of the National Championship, Alabama is up for Best Team. The Crimson Tide went undefeated in a Covid-modified season, which included 11 wins over SEC opponents, and their sixth title since Nick Saban took over the program in 2007.

Former Crimson Tide star Derrick Henry closes out Alabama’s nomination, as he is up for Best NFL player alongside Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, and Aaron Donald. Henry had a stellar season for the Tennessee Titans, he rushed for 2,027 yards and 17 touchdowns in 2020.

No Dolphins moments included for ESPYS 2021 awards

No Dolphins moments included for ESPYS 2021 awards

No matter how you classify a successful NFL season, there’s no denying that the Miami Dolphins had an excellent 2020 campaign. Did the end of the year align with the rest of the storyline? Absolutely not. But the Dolphins had wild plays, thrilling victories and improbable comebacks alongside some Herculean efforts to get the team to 10 wins on the season.

But all of those special moments and individual efforts weren’t enough to get the Miami Dolphins on the list of nominees for the NFL (or sports world, in general) candidates for the 2021 ESPN ESPYs. The ESPYs are ESPN’s annual awards show, meant to highlight the best in sports each year from all different leagues, backgrounds and competitive levels. And, best of all, there’s a good deal of fan voting to help decide the winners.

But there will be no opportunities for Dolphins fans to go to bat for their team at this year’s ESPYs — because there are no Dolphins on the list of nominees.

Cornerback Xavien Howard was left off the list of ‘Best NFL player’; failing to make the 4-man list of finalists. The Dolphins’ miraculous heave against the Las Vegas Raiders to help them win a critical game was left off the list of ‘Best Play’ candidates and that game itself, a frantic finish with multiple lead changes in Week 16 between two playoff contenders, was left off the list of ‘Best Game’ candidates.

The NFL representation of ‘Best Game’ instead went to a Week 14 clash between the Ravens and Browns.

There’s no way anyone is entering the 2021 NFL season with the objective of ‘making the ESPYs in 2022″ on their list of goals for the Dolphins. But hopefully the team will find so much success that ignoring them all together for next year’s edition of the awards will be impossible.
