Oregon drops in latest ESPN Power Rankings after upset loss to Washington

After the loss to Washington, the Ducks saw a substantial drop in the latest ESPN Power Rankings.

The Oregon Ducks entered Saturday with all of the momentum in the worst, just 4 wins away from a likely trip to the College Football Playoff and unlimited success in Dan Lanning’s first year as head coach.

They left with an excruciating loss to their most hated rivals, the Washing Huskies, and questions about what’s next.

While there is still a lot to play for in Eugene, the Ducks need to hit a reset button of sorts after allowing over 500-yards of offense to Michael Penix Jr. and the Huskies.  The loss didn’t tank their season, but it did drop them in the ESPN Power Rankings a decent amount.

Take a look at where Oregon now stands:

Oregon lead strong trio of top-10 Pac-12 teams in latest ESPN Power Rankings

When is the last time the Pac-12 had three teams in the top 10, four teams in the top 12, and five teams in the top 25?

Complete and utter chaos touched many corners of the college football world over the weekend, with three of the top 6 teams in the nation losing.

That chaos managed to miss the Pac-12 conference, though, allowing the teams out west to take advantage of the misfortunes of others and move up in the rankings.

While we wait for the official College Football Playoff rankings to come out on Tuesday, everyone has been quick to predict what they might look like, including us here at Ducks Wire. In the meantime, ESPN recently released their weekly power rankings, where a total of three Pac-12 teams made it into the top 10, while a fourth sits at No. 12, and a fifth sits at No. 23.

It’s been a while since the conference was this strong at the top. Take a look at where everyone landed in this week’s power rankings:

ESPN updates its college football power rankings after Week 9. Where is Ohio State after the Penn State win?

ESPN updated its Week 9 Power Rankings. Did Ohio State’s performance knock it from the top? #GoBucks

As we continue on for the college football season, we’re now through Week 9. Some of the same teams that were expected to be at the top and started there have remained there, but there have definitely been some surprises like there always are in this grand sport.

Each week, ESPN produces a list of college football power rankings that change based on performance, and the “worldwide leader” is at it again with its updated power rankings after Week 9.

Teams like Ohio State, Michigan, Georgia, and Tennessee continued to roll on Saturday, while teams like Oklahoma State and Wake Forest failed to impress.

Here is how ESPN sees the landscape of college football after Week 9 with its updated power rankings.

OSU Beavers sneak into ESPN Power Rankings; Oregon Ducks still the top dog out west

The Pac-12 has 3 teams in the top 10, 4 teams in the top 15, and 5 teams in the top 25, according to ESPN’s rankings, with the Ducks leading the pack.

It was a relatively boring day out west on Saturday, which is a good thing for the health of the Pac-12 Conference. That simply means that none of the good, ranked teams lost games to the bad, unranked teams.

No. 8 Oregon beat California. No. 10 USC beat Arizona. No. 12 UCLA beat Stanford. No. 14 Utah beat Washington State.

With that consistency, the Pac-12 was able to take advantage of the chaos that took place elsewhere in the top 25, where a total of 7 ranked teams ended up losing. Everyone but Oregon was able to move up in the ESPN Power Rankings this week because of it.

The Ducks are still standing atop the rest of the conference, though, and their offensive explosion-led win over Cal was impressive, even more so when you consider the fact that none of the coaches or players seemed satisfied with the victory.

Let’s see where ESPN ranks the Ducks after Week 8, along with the other Pac-12 teams;

ESPN continues to show Oregon Ducks no respect in latest power rankings

Oregon vs. UCLA is largely considered a top-10 matchup. Not to ESPN, though. They still have Oregon down in the rankings after the bye week.

Across nearly all of the polls on Sunday, you’ve seen the Oregon Ducks get a boost into the top 10 after the bye week. With some of the top teams in the nation — No. 3 Alabama and No. 8 TCU — getting upset on Saturday, it made room for the Ducks to move up. They are ranked No. 9 at the highest, thanks to the USA TODAY Coaches Poll.

That means most polls consider Oregon’s matchup against the UCLA Bruins a top-10 matchup.

ESPN is not one of those polls.

While UCLA made a big jump in the ESPN rankings after taking down Utah last week, the Ducks are still outside of the top 10 looking in. They are, however, one of four Pac-12 teams ranked inside the top 15.

Oregon drops in latest ESPN Power Rankings, gets leaped by UCLA Bruins

The Ducks played a complete game in the 49-22 blowout over Arizona. Despite that, they dropped in ESPN’s rankings and were leaped by UCLA.

For the first time all season, the Oregon Ducks seemingly played a complete game on Saturday night against the Arizona Wildcats. The offense was relentless, producing almost 600 yards in three quarters, and the rushing attack wouldn’t quit. Even more encouraging was a defense that stifled one of the best passing attacks in the nation, holding Jayden de Laura to 241 yards passing with 1 TD and 1 INT.

I think that with the Ducks going into the bye week, Oregon fans probably feel as good about their team as they have all season. So why are the Ducks dropping in the ESPN Power Rankings?

Last week after the win against Stanford, Oregon moved up to No. 11 in the rankings, surpassing their preseason mark for the first time. That number changed despite their 49-22 win over the Wildcats on Saturday. Shockingly, the UCLA Bruins jumped the Ducks after their win over the Utah Utes.

Did that many teams really look better than the Ducks this weekend? I’m not sure. Take a look at where all the Pac-12 teams rank in ESPN’s latest poll:

Where does Arkansas fall in the latest ESPN Power Rankings?

ESPN is giving Arkansas more credit than most polls in their latest power rankings.

Despite riding a two-game skid, No. 25 Arkansas is still catching the eye of the experts at ESPN.

In the latest ESPN Power Rankings, the Razorbacks check in at No. 23 ahead of their matchup with Mississippi State on the road this Saturday.

Arkansas is special because of how well they played in the 3rd quarter of last Saturday’s loss to Alabama says ESPN’s Alex Scarborough:

Give the Hogs credit for storming back in the second half. After trailing Alabama by three touchdowns, Arkansas got a 13-yard touchdown, recovered an onside kick, kicked a field goal and ran in another touchdown to make it a 5-point game. But then Alabama reminded everyone why it was a 17-point favorite when it put together two touchdown drives in the span of two minutes to secure the win — and Arkansas’ second straight loss. Sam Pittman will need to right the ship — and the struggling secondary — ahead of next Saturday’s trip to Mississippi State.

Arkansas is one of six schools listed in this week’s ESPN power rankings. The Razorbacks’ week six opponent, Mississippi State, failed to make the rankings this week despite being ranked in two major polls.

Oregon eclipses preseason standing in ESPN Power Rankings after win over Stanford

Despite the early loss, Oregon has clawed their way up the ESPN Power Rankings, where they’re finally ahead of their preseason ranking.

It’s no secret that the 2022 season did not start how the Oregon Ducks wanted it to. With a marquee matchup against the defending champion Georgia Bulldogs, Oregon had a chance to make a statement early on and begin the Dan Lanning era in Eugene with a bang.

Instead, they got trampled to the tune of a 49-3 loss. Unsurprisingly, they fell down all of the top-25 polls and even lost their top-25 ranking according to a couple of outlets.

Now, though, the Ducks have had time to claw their way back into things, and after a blowout win over Stanford put them at 4-1 on the season, Oregon has surpassed their preseason ranking in the ESPN Power Rankings. They also stand at No. 12 in both the USA TODAY Coaches Poll and the AP Poll as well.

Alongside the Ducks, there are a total of 6 Pac-12 teams ranked inside the top 25 according to these power rankings as well. Take a look at where ESPN has Oregon ranked:

Where is Ohio State in ESPN’s Power Rankings after Week 4

Did Ohio State move up at all after it dismantled Wisconsin last week?

As Ohio State continues its journey along its 2022 season, we like to check in with some of the national media to see what the perception of what’s going on in Columbus looks like. One of those places we check every week is ESPN and its weekly power rankings of all the teams in the FBS.

The Buckeyes have solidly been in the top two or three teams all year so far in 2022, but each week adds new observations and narratives, sometimes somewhat of a knee-jerky type thing, so we like to see where things stand.

Ohio State started the season No. 2 on ESPN’s power rankings but quickly dropped once everyone saw Georgia play one game. Since then, the Buckeyes have been kind of treading water in the same spot in the rankings despite showing improvement over the last three weeks.

So, where is OSU after the super wedgie it gave to Wisconsin over the last weekend? Did the Buckeyes move up? Here are the latest ESPN power rankings of the top 25 teams as those in Bristol see it.

Ducks leap up ESPN’s power rankings after big-time win over ranked BYU team

The Oregon Ducks are back in the top-15 of ESPN’s Power Ranking after a big-time win over the then-No. 12 BYU Cougars.

After losing to a dominant Georgia team to start the season, the Oregon Ducks needed a legitimate opponent to vanquish in order to get some wind back in their sails.

All due respect to the Eastern Washington Eagles, but Oregon could have won 100-0 and it wouldn’t have done a whole lot for the Ducks’ national perception.

The then-No. 12 BYU Cougars were the key for Oregon to get back into the limelight. Hosting a really good team and coming out on top was the key to getting the Ducks’ season back on track.

That’s exactly what happened, with Oregon dominating the Cougars, winning 41-20 in a game that could have been even more of a blowout. With the victory, Oregon saw their ranking move up across several polls, and now their spot in the ESPN Power Rankings took a massive jump. They now rank No. 13 according to the mothership, and writer Kyle Bonagura had this to say about the Ducks:

A decisive win at home against a ranked opponent was exactly what the Ducks needed to breathe enthusiasm back into the season. Their balanced offense (227 yards passing; 212 rushing) and strong run defense (61 yards allowed; 2.5 yards per carry) allowed this one to get out of hand early. Bo Nix was efficient through the air (13-of-18, 222 yards, two touchdowns) and on the ground (three touchdowns on nine carries) as the Ducks put this one to bed shortly into the second half.

Oregon’s schedule isn’t too frightening over the next month from a national perspective, but a trip to Washington State this weekend is one that should be treated with a lot of care. As long as the Ducks continue to win going forward, though, we should see their ranking stay on the rise.
