ESPN bowl projection: Rutgers football to play three-time national champions

ESPN makes bowl game projections for Rutgers football.

It appears that Rutgers football has been trending towards one bowl destination for several weeks, and ESPN is now locked-in with that destination.

In their latest bowl projections, ESPN college football insiders Mark Schlabach and Kyle Bonagura both have Rutgers going to the Pinstripe Bowl (Bronx, New York). While both ESPN writers are in lock-step when it comes to this being the destination for Rutgers, the bowl game opponent is different.

Schlabach has Georgia Tech as the opponent for Rutgers in the Pinstripe Bowl (which is the same opponent as his pick last week). But Nonagura has Rutgers playing Clemson.

It is certainly an intriguing match-up projection for Rutgers against a team that has been among the best in the nation over the past decade.

This has been a down year for Clemson by their usual standards (7-4) but the Tigers are certainly trending in the right direction. They’ve won their last three games, with two of those wins coming against ranked teams.

Dabo Swinney’s dynasty isn’t over, to say the least.

Clemson has made the College Football Playoff six times since 2015. They won the national championship in 2018 and again in 2018 (they also won a national championship in 1981).

At 6-5 (3-5 Big Ten), Rutgers is bowl-eligible for the first time since 2014. A win on Saturday against Maryland (6-5, 3-5 Big Ten) would be their first win since Greg Schiano returned to rebuild the program in 2020.

This would be the third time that Rutgers plays in the Pinstripe Bowl. Their first appearance came in 2011, when the Scarlet Knights beat Iowa State.

That was Schiano’s final game as head coach of Rutgers before he left for the NFL to become head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Where Tigers stand in latest ESPN bowl projections

Kyle Bonagura and Mark Schlabach are once again split on LSU’s bowl destination.

After a rough loss to the Tennessee Volunteers, ESPN has released its updated bowl projections from Kyle Bonagura and Mark Schlabach.

Just like last time, both of them have LSU going to different places and playing different teams. Schlabach has it facing Taulia Tagovailoa and the Maryland Terrapins in the Music City Bowl in Nashville, Tennessee, while Bonagura has the Tigers playing Purdue in the ReliaQuest Bowl in Tampa.

One way or another, they have LSU facing a Big 10 opponent. These projections are all just assumptions at this point because we are only halfway through the season. There are a lot of games that still need to be played between now and then. LSU travels to Gainesville, Florida, to play the Gators this weekend before playing back-to-back top-10 teams in Ole Miss and Alabama.

Purdue and Maryland played each other last weekend and the Boilermakers came out with a 31-29 win. Purdue already has two conference losses with losses to Penn State and Syracuse. Maryland had a close loss to Michigan and the loss to Purdue last weekend.

ESPN predicts third consecutive Alamo Bowl appearance for Longhorns

ESPN predicts another Alamo Bowl appearance for Texas…

The Texas football program and its fans are expecting a big season with bountiful results from first-year head coach Steve Sarkisian.

However, in ESPN’s latest bowl projections for the 2021 season, they did not foresee Sarkisian’s squad making a significant jump this year. ESPN’s Kyle Bonagura and Mark Schlabach predicted who would be playing in every bowl game, and when it came to Texas, it’s a song that Longhorn fans are all to familiar with at the moment.

Both Bonagura and Schlabach predicted that Texas would be making their third consecutive Alamo Bowl appearance against one of Steve Sarkisian’s former coaching stops in the Washington Huskies. This would not only be the third straight appearance, but also the sixth Alamo Bowl appearance for Texas since 2006.

Granted, the Longhorns have done well in the Alamo Bowl going 4-1 since 2006, but the program likely has their eyes set on a bigger picture. Texas lost three games last season by a combined 13 points. They were a fumble away against TCU, a decisive decision not to go for two against Oklahoma, and a missed field goal against Iowa State from the season being completely different.

Sarkisian is fresh off a national championship with Alabama that saw the Crimson Tide posses one of the most prolific offenses in the nation, and is hoping that his success will translate to Austin.

There is no margin for error, as the Longhorns are tasked with one of the toughest schedules in the nation, but the program and the fans are likely shooting for a New Year’s Six game at the very least in comparison to another Alamo Bowl appearance.

New 247Sports bowl projections have Auburn still playing on New Year’s Day

Despite losing two games in a row Auburn is still slotted in a New Year’s Day bowl by 247Sports

[jwplayer 5ygkmZtY]

Auburn’s two-game losing streak hasn’t really cost the Tigers in any way when it comes to bowl projections.

247Sports released their latest projections after Week 13 of the college football season and still have Gus Malzahn’s team heading to Orlando to play in the Citrus Bowl. The only difference is that this week it is Northwestern that the Tigers are slotted to meet.

This could be a Top 15 team vs. unranked matchup in Orlando, a location Auburn is familiar with during bowl season. The Tigers have underperformed this fall relative to expectations while the Wildcats are an upset loss away from being unbeaten and likely ranked inside the Top 10.

Auburn and Northwestern have met once before, that coming in the 2010 Outback Bowl. The Tigers pulled out a 38-35 victory in what was a wild game.

Updated bowl projections from Sporting News has Auburn vs. Big Ten team

Auburn and Indiana have only met once in the two programs history with it coming in the 1990 Peach Bowl, a 27-23 Auburn victory.

[jwplayer C0XPzMyL]

There are not many things you can count on in the year 2020 but one of them is that Auburn will probably play its bowl game in Florida and the Tigers will probably play a team from the Big Ten.

Over at Sporting News, Bill Bender has released his latest bowl projections and has Auburn facing Indiana in the Vrbo Citrus Bowl in Orlando on New Year’s Day.

The Hoosiers are currently 5-1 with their only loss coming at Ohio State, 42-35. They will be without star quarterback Michael Penix for the rest of the season after he tore his ACL in Saturday’s victory over Maryland this past Saturday.

The two programs have met just once before, that coming in the 1990 Peach Bowl. Auburn pulled out a 27-23 victory in the old Fulton County Stadium in Atlanta.

Updated bowl projections from College Football News

The latest bowl projections from College Football News has Auburn playing Indiana in the Citrus Bowl on New Year’s Day.

Auburn took it on the chin this past Saturday in a 42-13 loss to rival Alabama. The Tigers look to rebound when they host No. 5/6 Texas A&M on Saturday in Jordan-Hare Stadium.

A win against the Aggies would likely improve the Tigers bowl projections but, as of right now, Gus Malzahn’s team is projected to play upstart Indiana from the Big Ten in the Vrbo Citrus Bowl in Orlando on January 1 by College Football News.

The Hoosiers’ only loss of the season came against No. 3 Ohio State in Columbus, a close 42-35 defeat to the Buckeyes. Tom Allen’s team will be without starting quarterback Michael Penix the rest of the year after he tore his ACL in the win over Maryland this past Saturday.

Longhorns Wire Bowl Projections: Where does Texas play?

With three games remaining in the 2020 college football season for the Texas Longhorns, the staff makes their bowl game predictions.

Texas’ 2020 season is just three weeks away from its conclusion. Depending on how the next few weeks finish, the Longhorns could add a fourth game on their schedule if they’re able to make the Big 12 Championship in Arlington, Texas at AT&T Stadium.

Projections have varied from week to week for head coach Tom Herman’s squad. Last season Texas played in the Alamo Bowl for the third time since 2010, could this year be No. 4?

Staff Bowl Projections

Patrick Conn, Site Editor

The Longhorns are currently in a position where they could play in a wide range of bowl games this year. The defense has played much better as of late, the offense just needs to catch up to give them an opportunity to win out and play for the Big 12 Championship.

Bowl Projection: Texas vs USC, Alamo Bowl

CFP Top 4: Alabama, Notre Dame, Clemson and Ohio State

Cami Griffin, Senior Staff Contributor

I don’t have enough confidence in a Tom Herman squad to believe that they’ll win the next three games on the schedule. It’s certainly possible, but even if that’s the case — I don’t see them winning the Big 12 Championship game against either Oklahoma or Oklahoma State. If the Longhorns finish with three or four losses on the year, the Texas Bowl sounds fitting.

Bowl Projection: Texas vs. Auburn, Texas Bowl

CFP Top 4: Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, Notre Dame

Griffin McVeigh, Staff Contributor

I have decided to be optimistic and predict Texas to beat their final three opponents and make a Big 12 championship appearance. Sadly, the winning stops there when Oklahoma State gets revenge over the Longhorns and win the Big 12 title. As a one-loss Big 12 champion, the Cowboys would make the College Football Playoff and leave a New Year’s Six spot open.

Texas’ 2018 run is eerily similar, finishing 10-3 and winning the Sugar Bowl. I think this season will be similar but with the Sugar Bowl being semifinal this season, the Cotton Bowl will have to do.

Bowl Projection: Texas vs. Texas A&M, Cotton Bowl

CFP Top 4: Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, Oklahoma State

ESPN Bowl Projections

Kyle Bonagura: Texas vs. Arkansas in the Texas Bowl at NRG Stadium (Houston)

Mark Schlabach: Texas vs. LSU in the Texas Bowl

ESPN Bowl Projections: Texas to get revenge from 2019 matchup

ESPN projects UT will get their rematch against LSU in the Texas Bowl. It will be the second year in a row the two schools face each other.

Despite not looking their greatest this season, the Texas Longhorns have pulled off three consecutive victories against Baylor, Oklahoma State, and West Virginia.

Head coach Tom Herman has been able to turn the season around after starting 0-2 in conference play.

While a Big 12 championship appearance is still not out of the question, Texas still has two difficult matchups in Iowa State and Kansas State after facing Kansas in two weeks. Because of this, ESPN’s bowl projections still do not have the Longhorns in a top tier bowl game.

Instead, ESPN projects Texas will finally get their rematch against the LSU Tigers in the Texas Bowl. The Tigers beat the Longhorns in Austin 45-38 in one of the games of the seasons in 2019. The two teams were scheduled to face each other in Sept. at LSU, but COVID-19 had other ideas.

[lawrence-related id=21955]

The Tigers have had a rough beginning to their 2020 season. Trying to replace over 20 starters from their national championship roster, the turnover has caused struggles for head coach Ed Orgeron. Joe Burrow, Justin Jefferson, and Ja’Marr Chase were all players who tore up Texas and are no longer with the program.

LSU currently sits at 2-3 with wins over Vanderbilt and South Carolina. The losses have come against Mississippi State, Missouri, and Auburn.

ESPN throws in a second projection, saying Texas will face another SEC opponent in Arkansas. Old Southwest Conference rivals, if the Longhorns and Razorbacks face each other, it would be a tune-up game for 2021’s matchup in Fayetteville.

[lawrence-related id=25589]

Texas still has an opportunity to move up into a more prestigious bowl game with wins in their final three games. As things stand, the best scenario for Texas is still a New Year’s Six bowl as Big 12 champions.

However, a more realistic scenario is the Longhorns ending up exactly where they are right now. In the Texas Bowl against a decent to below average SEC opponent.

Bowl games are all about fun matchups. Facing off against either LSU or Arkansas would provide plenty of headlines.
