ESPN announces 30 for 30 Documentary on Hall of Fame pass rusher Reggie White

ESPN Films Announces 30 for 30 Documentary “The Minister of Defense” on the late, great NFL Hall of Famer Reggie White

Reggie White is a legendary figure, and the main reason Javon Hargrave landed an $84 million contract from the San Francisco 49ers.

A unanimous All-American at Tennessee, White spent two seasons playing for the Memphis Showboats of the United States Football League (USFL) before he was selected in the first round of the 1984 Supplemental Draft.

A key cog on Buddy Ryan’s famous Eagles defenses, White played 15 NFL seasons for Philadelphia, Green Bay, and Carolina, becoming one of the greatest defensive players in NFL history.

White passed away on December 26, 2004, at 43.

Now, ESPN Films is set to unveil a 30 for 30 documentary titled “The Minister of Defense.”

ESPN Films today announced that it is in production on a 30 for 30 documentary, “The Minister of Defense,” that examines the complex and sometimes controversial life of Reggie White, one of the greatest and most faith-driven players in NFL history. Told in part through never-before-seen footage from a 2004 interview filmed two months before his death, the film chronicles both White’s incredible dominance as one of the best defensive players ever and his spiritual journey as an ordained evangelical minister who questioned his blind faith toward the end of his life. Along with interviews with teammates from both the Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers, the film features Reggie’s son Jeremy who embarks on a journey to understand his father’s life, which ended tragically short at the age of 43. “The Minister of Defense” is a portrait of a man who constantly strived to “do right” but found that sometimes there is no easy answer as to what “right” means.

The documentary will be directed by Ken Rodgers (“Bullies of Baltimore,” “The Tuck Rule,” “The Two Bills”) and Courtland Bragg (“Hard Knocks: Training Camp,” “Hard Knocks: In-Season,” “All or Nothing”)

White was a Two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year, Super Bowl XXXI champion, 13-time Pro Bowl, and 13-time All-Pro selection, and is second place all-time among NFL career sack leaders with 198 (behind Bruce Smith’s 200 career sacks). He was selected to the NFL 75th Anniversary All-Time Team, NFL 100th Anniversary All-Time Team, NFL 1990s All-Decade Team, and the NFL 1980s All-Decade Team.

Shark: New ESPN 30 for 30 film to focus on Greg Norman and the 1996 Masters

How the Masters shaped Greg Norman’s legacy, for better or worse.

Greg Norman has dominated the headlines over the last year for his work with LIV Golf Investments to start the Saudi Arabia-backed Super Golf League. That said, an upcoming documentary on the 20-time PGA Tour winner and two-time major champion will instead focus on how one day at the Masters in 1996 shaped his career.

“Shark”, the latest film in ESPN’s award-winning 30 for 30 series, will debut at 8 p.m. ET on April 5 from directors Jason Hehir and Thomas Odelfelt. The film will be made available on ESPN+ immediately after the premiere.

“There are places in sports that have such a mystique that they can forever shape the way we remember an athlete. Augusta National is one of those places,” said Hehir, who also worked on popular documentaries The Last Dance and The Fab Five. “Greg Norman is by any objective measure one of the greatest golfers to ever play the game. Two-time major winner, 331 weeks at world No. 1, leading money winner in PGA history pre-Tiger, one of the few indelible players of his era. But despite all his success, he’s perhaps remembered most for his failure at the Masters, particularly his excruciating collapse on final Sunday in 1996. I was excited for the opportunity to tell the story of one man’s career through the prism of such a sacred site, and to examine the power of one place to mold a man’s legacy, for better or worse.”

Previous golf 30 for 30 films and shorts include “Hit It Hard” about John Daly (2016), “Tiger Hood” on New York City street golf (2016) and “The Arnold Palmer” on the drink, not the player (2012).

Steve Kerr featured in upcoming Michael Jordan era Chicago Bulls ESPN 30 for 30

Steve Kerr will appear in ESPN’s upcoming Michael Jordan era Chicago Bulls 30 for 30 documentary.

Before he was roaming the sidelines as the head coach of the Golden State Warriors, Steve Kerr won three championships with Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls.

In five seasons with the Bulls, Kerr averaged 8.2 points shooting 50.7% from the field and 47.9% from beyond the arc in 23.2 minutes per game.

In 1997, Kerr cemented his place in Chicago’s dynasty by drilling a game-winning shot in game six of the NBA Finals against the Utah Jazz. Kerr knocked down a top of the key jumper to give the Bulls an 88-86 lead with five seconds left on an assist from Jordan.

Kerr will relive his time in Chicago in ESPN’s latest installment of the 30 for 30 series. Golden State’s coach will be featured in “The Last Dance” alongside Jordan, President Barack Obama, Kobe Bryant, Charles Barkley, Scottie Pippin, Dennis Rodman, Justin Timberlake and others.
