Watch: PGA Championship player goes ballistic (as his caddie shudders)

A University of Minnesota product had a rough stretch Friday at Kiawah Island’s Ocean Course, and it pushed him over the edge.

With heightened stakes and a gale-force wind, it’s easy to see how players at the 103rd PGA Championship could let their emotions get away from them.

This happened to University of Minnesota product Erik van Rooyen on Friday when a rough stretch on the back nine pushed him over the edge.

It appeared that the South African would end up on the right side of the cut, but he made a bogey on No. 14, a double on 15 and then another bogey on 16 before knocking his tee shot on the 17th into the water.

The result was a Herculian tirade, one that included damaged tee markers.

Van Rooyen’s caddie, Alex Gaugert, nearly walked into the tirade and winced as he quickly turned away.

As you can see, the first wack caused two marshals off to the left shudder.

The second swipe is what broke the club head off the iron and more importantly, freaked out his caddie, who ducked for cover.

Van Rooyen took a triple-bogey 6 on the hole. It was the third straight 6 on his scorecard.

‘Who’s this kid?’ It’s Angus Flanagan, one of three Golden Gophers in the 3M Open

Angus Flanagan, a 21-year-old senior, will be playing in the PGA Tour’s 3M Open.

Three generations of Minnesota Gopher golfers – try saying that three times fast – teed off on the front nine at TPC Twin Cities on the eve of the 3M Open.

Leading the way was the ageless wonder, Tom Lehman, 61, who consulted on a re-design of the Arnold Palmer layout in 2018. Lehman played with a couple of kids more than half his age: Erik Van Rooyen, a 30-year-old South African who completed his college eligibility in 2013 and met his wife while attending “The U,” and Angus Flanagan, a 21-year-old senior on the team from Woking, England, who was named a third-team All-American by Golfweek and a first-team All-Big Ten honoree.

Lehman made the cut last month at the Charles Schwab Challenge and the five-time Tour winner and Minnesota native is a beloved figure in his home state. Van Rooyen and Flanagan were looking forward to the chance to pick Lehman’s brain on the course setup.

“I’ve never played with Tom Lehman, so I’m looking forward to playing with him today. And then myself and Angus, it’s almost a couple generations of Gopher golfers that will play together, so I’m looking forward to it,” Van Rooyen said. “It’s good fun to reminisce about the days we were there and to talk about the stuff they’re doing now. You know, I’m 30 years old, but I still feel like I’m 21 years old.”

While Van Rooyen is on the verge of earning his PGA Tour card after a T-3 finish at the WGC Mexico Championship, Flanagan is making his PGA Tour debut on a sponsor’s exemption.

“I think a lot of guys have been like ‘Who’s this kid?’ ” Flanagan said. “Because I’m 21, but I look like I’m 15. So, they’re probably wondering ‘Who’s this guy?’ Like, is he one of the guys’ sons or something like that?’ ”

Flanagan earned his invite into the 3M Open by winning the Minnesota State Open with a course-record, final-round 64 at Royal Golf Club in Lake Elmo. At the prize-giving ceremony, he learned he would be receiving more than just a trophy.

“I kind of heard rumors that there was going to be a surprise for me at the prize giving,” Flanagan explained. “My caddie stupidly came up to me and said, ‘Hey, there’s going to be something, but I can’t tell you.’ So as soon as (tournament director) Hollis (Cavner) came up, I was thinking, ‘Oh, maybe it might be I don’t have to prequalify, I can go straight into the Monday qualifier.’ But then I mentioned something how I was stuck here (and unable to go home to England), kind of making it sound out like it’s a problem when it’s really not, and he used that in the speech and said, ‘Since you’re stuck here, I’d like to invite you to the 3M Open.’ ”

Even with a bit of a heads up, Flanagan was dumbfounded.

“It kind went through one ear and out the other because I just couldn’t process it with everything going on. It probably took me a good 30 seconds to actually realize like, ‘Wow, I’m actually playing against some of the guys I look up to, I see on TV,’ ” he said. “Sunday night I was out here practicing and I was on the range and I was talking to Russell Knox, and I’ve looked up to Russell because he’s from Scotland, my dad’s from Scotland as well. Then DJ turns up on the range and starts hitting balls next to me and I was just like, ‘Wow,’ I had to pinch myself a bit and say, ‘Is this real?’ I thought I was in a dream still.”

It’s a big step up from being co-medalist at the Big 10 Championship to playing against the likes of Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepka, but Flanagan hopes to treat it no differently.

“My dad said it’s basically a college event that you play in with a couple TV stands around,” Flanagan said. “We’ve played college events before which have been broadcasted and stuff like that. There is no difference, but it’s probably just a college event with some of the top players in the world playing.”

And a couple of fellow Golden Gophers in Lehman and Van Rooyen to make it feel even more like just another college event.

Chase Seiffert (+10000)

Watch: Erik van Rooyen rocks out on guitar to Foo Fighters

Professional golfers are spending their time off doing an array of activities. One player showed his skill on the guitar.

Erik van Rooyen showed his talent on the golf course last month, making a run at the World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship title before finishing T-3.

The 30-year-old South African, who played collegiately at University of Minnesota and competes primarily on the European Tour, is rather gifted off the golf course, as well.

It’s an uncertain time for professional golfers due to the widespread cancellations and postponements of tournaments and major championships. Players are spending their time off by doing everything from practicing their game to juggling toilet paper on a wedge.

How has van Rooyen been passing the time off? Shredding on the guitar – ankles out, of course – while playing along to the Foo Fighter’s No Way Back. From the video, he posted it also appears van Rooyen has a healthy guitar collection at home and displays them prominently on his otherwise blank walls.

Hey Erik: I happen to play the drums, so let me know if you’re looking to have a virtual jam session.

With Masters debut approaching, Erik van Rooyen finds his groove at WGC-Mexico Championship

With his Masters debut approaching, Erik van Rooyen has found his groove at the WGC-Mexico Championship.

Erik van Rooyen picked the perfect time to find his A-game.

After tying the course record on Friday with a 62 (Jon Rahm would break the record with a 61 on Saturday), the 30-year-old finds himself in contention at this week’s WGC-Mexico Championship with a busy schedule ahead.

In 46 days the eyes of the golf world will be on Augusta National for the Masters, where van Rooyen will compete for the first time. He qualified for the Masters by finishing inside the top 50 of the final OWGR last year.

As a freshman in college in 2009 at the University of Minnesota, the Golden Gophers played in Augusta State’s tournament, held the weekend before the Masters. Van Rooyen and his Minnesota teammates got tickets to Monday’s practice round.

“I remember Tiger was warming up with Fred Couples, Trevor Immelman was on the range, and I guess you go see some iconic holes, No. 1, walked a few holes, and then went to Amen Corner,” recalled van Rooyen after Friday’s round in Mexico City. “Thirteen is a much bigger dogleg than what it seems on TV, and then we just kind of spent some time there, bought a little bit of merchandise, as everybody does, and yeah, just kind of tried to soak it in.”

Looking back, van Rooyen has fond memories of his first trip to Augusta National. As an untested freshman, the South African knew his game was far from Masters-quality, but he knew he would one day get his chance.

“I always thought I’d play it, but until you do it, you don’t really know,” said van Rooyen.

“I’m probably looking forward to the first tee shot on Thursday with all the people there. That’s what you dream of, right?”

While his dream is soon to become a reality, van Rooyen has some work to do before driving down Magnolia Lane.

“I’d love to get into the Players. I’m currently just outside the top 50,” he said. “I’m playing Honda next week, hopefully Players, and then Match Play and then Augusta, which I’ve never been to before.”

After missing the cut at last week’s Genesis Invitational, the 30-year-old said he’s learned a lot about his game this week at a tournament featuring a field of the world’s best.

“I think at a tournament like this and a field like this, if you can play well, you can play well anywhere,” said van Rooyen. “So if I continue the way I’m going, it’ll be a big confidence booster.”

WGC- Mexico Championship: Bryson DeChambeau holds two-shot lead entering weekend

MEXICO CITY – Par ran into turbulence in the thin air during Friday’s second round of the World Golf Championship-Mexico Championship.

A day after the field finished a combined 100-over par, the sun-drenched Club de Golf Chapultepec, which rests 7,800 feet above sea level, was there for the taking as the wind was down and the greens were smooth.

And players took as much as they could.

Bryson DeChambeau made six birdies in a seven-hole stretch en route to an 8-under-par 63 to grab the lead through 36 holes at 11 under. Erik van Rooyen celebrated his 30th birthday by tying the course record with a bogey-free 62 to get to 10 under. He was joined there by Patrick Reed, who tied his career-best with nine birdies in a round and signed for a 63.

WGC-MEXICO: Leaderboard | Best photos | Updates

Hideki Matsuyama shot 64 and Justin Thomas, keyed by a birdie-birdie-birdie-birdie-eagle stretch, shot 66 as both wound up at 9 under.

First-round leader and world No. 1 Rory McIlroy got off to a slow start with no birdies through his first 11 holes but finished with four in his last seven holes for a 69 to stand at 8 under.

The field was 52-under par in the second round.

“Surely when you have days like that you can’t help but smile out there, and making those putts the way I did, striking the ball the way I did, it’s surely a joy out there,” said DeChambeau, who made 143 feet of putts. “The confidence (with the putter) is high, and it’s a lot of fun to see putts finally going in. I’m going to go out and do my work like I normally do, just a couple minutes, go putt a little bit, hit some balls, but overall everything is going pretty well, firing on all cylinders.”

Van Rooyen wasn’t firing on all cylinders when he woke up but by mid-afternoon everything was just fine.

“The first thing I told my wife this morning, man, I feel really old,” he said. “But I guess I’m still quite young, and what a way to kick off the 30th and shoot 9 under. A little bit of a gift to myself.

“I just hit it really well. Obviously a few really good chip-ins the last couple days, and then putted really well. I’ve been a little bit uncomfortable the last few weeks, but I’m working on that stuff, and you know how it goes, just stick to your process, just trust in the fact that you’re doing the right things, and 62s happen.”

Thomas, who lost in a playoff to Phil Mickelson here in 2018, wasn’t exactly beaming after his 66.

“I’m pretty ticked off, to be perfectly honest, with the last eight holes,” said Thomas, who was 1 over his final eight holes. “I feel I should have gotten two, three, four more (birdies), but I got two days left. It’s over with, and I have a lot more positives than I do not playing those last eight holes well.

“I feel like I’m playing well, seeing the lines well with my putter. My speed has been good. I feel like that’s why I’ve made some of those putts, but anything can happen out here. Low rounds are out there to be had, and we just hope that we can get one or two of them this weekend.”

Reed knocked in 150 feet of putts.

“I think the biggest thing for me was just get the ball on the green,” he said. “It seemed like the putter was working, especially early on. On a golf course like this, you get the ball in play off the tee, you’re able to kind of attack with irons, you’re going to have a lot of looks.

“Tomorrow is a new day. You don’t even think about what happened today going into tomorrow, and you just kind of move on and go out and continue making quality golf swings and continue making good putts because these are the type of greens when you get on Poa they get bumpy in the afternoon where you’re going to hit some good putts that are going to go in and you’re going to hit some good putts that are going to miss, and you’re going to hit some bad putts that are going to go in. You’ve just got to roll with the punches and keep on going and not let anything bother you.”
