Georgia’s Eric Stokes receives NFL player comparison

Georgia Bulldogs cornerback Eric Stokes was a tough to throw on at the college level. Stokes is projected as an early 2021 NFL draft pick

Georgia Bulldogs cornerback Eric Stokes was a challenge to throw on at the college level. Stokes, who ran an impressive 40-yard dash, is very athletic and has several seasons of starting experience.

In a recent NFL mock draft, Stokes goes No. 61 (second round) to the Buffalo Bills. Stokes has been compared to former Tennessee Titans defensive back Coty Sensabaugh ahead of the 2021 NFL draft.

Here’s how NFL.com evaluates Stokes’ strengths and weaknesses ahead of the 2021 NFL draft:

Depending upon scheme, need or preference, Stokes offers teams the potential to play him outside or from the slot. Speed and quickness should allow him to stay with route runners or within close-out distance when he gets behind. Stokes played with better press technique in 2020 and he’s willing to get physical near the goal line, but his play strength is below average. While there have been mild flashes of playmaking potential, he’s more likely to play the receiver rather than attacking the football and looking for takeaways. He’s twitchy in tight quarters with the potential to become more disruptive in zone. His size, speed and athleticism could make him a Day 2 pick as a future CB3, but his weakness as a run defender will be challenged quickly by NFL offenses.

Eric Stokes has what it takes to play outside defensive back in the NFL. Stokes dominated on the outside at Georgia and seldom allowed a catch that wasn’t heavily contested. He did not play the slot much after his freshman season. Stokes played well against top flight competition and has NFL-level speed and quickness.

Stokes played in 37 career college football games and recorded 78 total tackles, so, yes, he could be more aggressive as a tackler. The NFL is a passing league and being able to cover receivers closely is far more important than tackling in the run game for cornerbacks.

The former Georgia star has been compared to Sensabaugh. Who is  Sensabaugh?

The Tennessee Titans drafted Sensabaugh, a former Clemson Tiger, with a fourth-round pick in the 2012 NFL draft. Sensabaugh played in the NFL from 2012-2019, but was only a regular starter for two seasons.

Sensabaugh was athletic, but he did not have the elite production of Stokes in college. At Georgia, Stokes was named an All-American by CBS Sports and 247Sports for his efforts in the 2020 season. Stokes intercepted four passes as a junior.

Sensabaugh intercepted three passes in his entire NFL career. Overall, this comparison may not be the best. Regardless of his comparison, Stokes will likely be drafted in the second round of the 2021 NFL draft.

UGA football CB Tyson Campbell declares for 2021 NFL Draft

Georgia Bulldogs cornerback Tyson Campbell is entering the 2021 NFL Draft.

Georgia Bulldogs cornerback Tyson Campbell is entering the 2021 NFL Draft. Campbell joins fellow Georgia starting cornerback Eric Stokes in entering the NFL Draft.

Tyson Campbell came to the University of Georgia as a highly touted five-star recruit. Campbell helped lead American Heritage High School (Plantation, Florida) to a state championship in 2017.

Kirby Smart, Dan Lanning, and the defensive staff will have their hands full trying to rebuild the secondary for the 2021 season. Both Campbell and Stokes are projected to be selected in the first few rounds of the 2021 NFL Draft. It is tough to replace that level of talent, but fortunately, Georgia as several elite recruits to fill in the void.

Throwback to one of the best plays of Tyson Campbell’s career. He’ll be missed.

Tyson Campbell thanked coach Smart, Georgia, and announced his NFL Draft decision via his Twitter account:

UGA football player card: DB Eric Stokes

Georgia Bulldogs defensive back Eric Stokes will be an important player for Dan Lanning’s defense in 2020

Eric Stokes, cornerback (No. 27):

Class: Junior

Height: 6-1

Weight: 185 pounds

Hometown: Covington, Georgia

High School: Eastside High School

Georgia Bulldogs defensive back Eric Stokes will be an important player for Dan Lanning’s defense in 2020. Stokes will be the number one cornerback on the team.

Stokes finished last season as a second team All-SEC performer and has a chance to make the first team this season. He emerged during the 2018 season after being a three-star recruit who redshirted in 2017. Stokes broke out against the Missouri Tigers, where he made key pass deflections and blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown.

The Eastside High School product finished 2019 with 38 tackles and 9 pass break-ups. He was a key cog in the top scoring defense in the country and should be just as disruptive next season. Bulldog fans should enjoy Stokes this season because he may be heading to the NFL afterwards.

Stokes had arguably Georgia’s best play of the 2019 season:

Georgia’s Eric Stokes has chance to be All-SEC

Georgia football’s Eric Stokes is coming off an impressive 2019 season. Does he have what it takes to be All-SEC in 2020?

Eric Stokes is coming off an impressive 2019 season, where he was among the best corners in the SEC. Stokes will have his work cut out for him in to be All-SEC in 2020. In order to be the SEC’s best corner in 2020, Stokes will have to outplay LSU’s all-world cornerback Derek Stingley Jr., so Stokes may have to settle for All-SEC.

Stingley Jr. put together an impressive freshman campaign and only got better as the season went on. Stingley is the SEC’s highest graded corner returning according to PFF:

Georgia’s Eric Stokes Jr. checks in at number four on the list. Stokes will be looking for either D.J. Daniel or former five-star recruit Tyson Campbell to step up on the other side of the field to totally lock down opposing passing attacks. Campbell (7th) and Daniel (8th) are two of the top eight returning corners in the SEC according to PFF.

Georgia additionally adds talented 2020 corner recruits in Kelee Ringo and Jalen Kimber. Both of these players have the skills to step into a starting role should they be called to action.

Eric Stokes will have a chance to make All-SEC because of his ability to limit the big-play:

Stokes will have more great safety play behind him in Richard LeCounte and Lewis Cine this year. Look for him to be targeted sparingly in 2020.

Next page (sorry – didn’t want to slow down browsers): Eric Stokes is putting in off-season work and may be aided by another area of Georgia’s elite defense.

Georgia football’s CB Eric Stokes returning to Athens

Georgia Bulldogs cornerback Eric Stokes Jr. is returning to Athens for another season between the hedges. He was eligible for the NFL Draft.

Georgia Bulldogs cornerback Eric Stokes Jr. is returning to Athens for another season between the hedges. Stokes is Georgia’s best corner and is a key piece for UGA’s talented 2020 secondary. Stokes is a redshirt sophomore, but has more than enough talent to declare for the 2020 NFL Draft.

Today, Stokes Jr. joined fellow secondary mates Mark Webb and Richard LeCounte in returning for another season at Georgia. Stokes announced his decision via Twitter:

Stokes recorded nine pass deflections and thirty-eight tackles in 2019. He started every game for Georgia. Stokes’ best game came against the Tennessee Volunteers when he deflected three passes and forced one memorable fumble:

This hit put an exclamation point of UGA’s win in Knoxville. Stokes will continue to make a huge impact for Dan Lanning’s defense. He didn’t put up big-time numbers in 2020, but that is attributed to teams respecting him and throwing against other players.
