UFC veteran Eric Spicely declined Power Slap opportunity after balking at $2K/$2K offer

UFC veteran Eric Spicely revealed the measly offer he received to partake in Dana White’s Power Slap League.

Ever since the news broke late last year that UFC president Dana White would promote slap fighting, it’s been expected that UFC fighters – past or present – eventually could appear in hopes of appealing to the established MMA fanbase.

Now the first one is on record.

Monday, veteran light heavyweight [autotag]Eric Spicely[/autotag] revealed on Twitter (h/t Luke Thomas) that he was offered to partake in the UFC-backed Power Slap League. He said he was “shocked” to find out the pay was $2,000 to show and $2,000 to win for the first fight.

Spicely didn’t explain further on Twitter, but Thomas subsequently reported that Spicely showed him “some evidence for his claims.”

In follow-up text messages with MMA Junkie’s Nolan King, Spicely, who appeared on “The Ultimate Fighter 23” in 2016, said he was approached by “TUF” producers – not UFC or Power Slap matchmakers – about competing in Power Slap. Producers who worked on “TUF” also are behind the eight-episode “Power Slap: Road to the Title” reality series that premiered last Wednesday on TBS.

Spicely told MMA Junkie that he hopped on a call with producers he’d worked with, heard the pay and said he wasn’t interested.

Salaries for Power Slap competitors are disclosed to the Nevada Athletic Commission, which voted last November to regulate slap fighting ahead of Power Slap’s debut. Those salaries, like the UFC’s, are not public information.

Spicely, 36, had two separate stints in the UFC. After filming “TUF 23,” he went 2-4 with the promotion 2016 to 2018. He then picked up back-to-back wins in CES before he returned to the UFC in June 2019 and lost a unanimous decision to Deron Winn.

Spicely (12-8) was scheduled to fight Aug. 1, 2020 at UFC Fight Night 173 but withdrew on weigh-in day. He later said he was on “anitdepressants due to head trauma,” which caused his weight cut to go “horribly wrong.”

Given Spicely’s admission then, most observers likely would consider him turning down Power Slap a wise move. Health experts and a leading neuroscientist have criticized White and the UFC for trying to legitimize slap fighting, citing its senseless danger since competitors are not allowed to intelligently defend themselves as they are in traditional combat sports.

Spicely hasn’t competed in MMA since September 2021 at OKTAGON 28, where he was knocked out in the first round. The loss was his fourth in a row.

Eric Spicely out of UFC on ESPN+ 31 bout vs. Markus Perez

Another fighter has been forced off Saturday’s card in Las Vegas.

[autotag]Eric Spicely[/autotag] won’t be fighting at Saturday’s UFC on ESPN+ 31.

Rhode Island’s Spicely (12-5 MMA, 2-4 UFC) has fallen out his bout for an undisclosed reason after making the trip out to Las Vegas. His opponent, [autotag]Markus Perez[/autotag] (12-3 MMA, 2-3 UFC), is expected to remain on the card.

Sources with knowledge of the situation informed MMA Junkie of the situation but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement.

Spicely, 33, is in his second stint with the promotion. After of a “Fight of the Night” earning loss to Deron Winn in his promotional return, Spicely was expected to fight Brendan Allen in October. However, the Tristar fighter was forced to pull out due to injury.

UFC targeting Markus Perez vs. Eric Spicely for August event

The UFC is working on Markus Perez vs. Eric Spicely for a yet-to-be-announced event on Aug. 1.

The UFC is booking bouts fast and furiously – so much so that they are already working on fights for the August schedule.

The promotion is currently targeting a middleweight matchup between [autotag]Markus Perez[/autotag] and [autotag]Eric Spicely[/autotag] for Aug. 1.

Currently, Perez (12-3 MMA, 2-3 UFC) vs. Spicely (12-5 MMA, 2-5 UFC) is the only known bout for the Aug. 1 event, which has not been formally announced. There is no known location for the card at this time.

Two people with knowledge of the situation informed MMA Junkie of the targeted booking on Saturday but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement. The news was first reported by MMA Fighting.

Perez, 29, has alternated losses and wins since his UFC debut in December 2017. Losing his debut to Eryk Anders, Perez rebounded with a submission win over James Bochnivic. Since then, Perez has bookended a submission win over Anthony Hernandez with unanimous decision losses to Andrew Sanchez and Wellington Turman.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic rocked the UFC schedule, Perez was scheduled to fight April 11 in Portland, Oreg. against Alessio Di Chirico. However, the event was ultimately canceled.

Spicely, 33, has been booked for three fights since his UFC return in June 2018. All three books failed to come to fruition. In his promotional return fight, Spicely, a submission specialist, pushed his ground abilities to the side against Deron Winn. While losing the fight, Spicely earned a $50,000 performance bonus for “Fight of the Night.”

Prior to the pandemic outbreak, Spicely was expected to fight March 28 in Columbus, Ohio against Roman Kopylov. However, the event was ultimately canceled.

Puna Soriano out of UFC on ESPN 8, rebooked for May event; Eric Spicely gets new opponent

Two cards have been shaken up after one fighter was shifted off of UFC on ESPN 8.

[autotag]Puna Soriano[/autotag] won’t compete at UFC on ESPN 8 after all, but it didn’t take long for his next fight to be booked.

Originally expected to face [autotag]Eric Spicely[/autotag] March 28 in Columbus, Ohio, Soriano (7-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) now will meet [autotag]Anthony Hernandez[/autotag] on May 16 at an event expected to take place in San Diego.

As for Spicely (12-5 MMA, 2-5 UFC), the submission will remain on UFC on ESPN 8 card to take on [autotag]Roman Kopylov[/autotag] instead.

Two people with knowledge of the situation informed MMA Junkie of the Soriano-Hernandez booking but asked to remain anonymous as the UFC has yet to make an announcement. The promotion announced Spicely vs. Kopylov (8-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) on Friday.

After earning a UFC contract on “Dana White’s Contender Series,” Soriano made his promotional debut at UFC 245 in December. Taking on Oskar Piechota, Soriano leveled his Polish opponent en route to a knockout victory in Round 1. Soriano, 27, has finished six of seven opponents with five knockouts and one submission to his name.

Also a DWCS signee, Hernandez (7-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) will look to turn a win into a winning streak. His most recent fight came in August, when he submitted Jun Yong Park by second-round anaconda choke. A former LFA champion, Hernandez has gone to decision only once. The MMA Gold Fight Team product has five submission victories.
