Colts’ Eric Fisher among The Athletic’s top 2022 free agents

The Athletic ranked Colts LT Eric Fisher among the top-75 free agents in 2022.

Indianapolis Colts veteran left tackle Eric Fisher is likely to hit the free-agent market following his one season as the blindside protector for quarterback Carson Wentz.

Though there is still the slight chance the Colts re-sign Fisher for fear of not finding a better option this offseason, his inconsistencies as a pass protector could force Chris Ballard to let the former test the market.

Should that happen, Sheil Kapadia of The Athletic ranked Fisher at No. 30 in his list of the top-75 free agent in 2022.

30. Eric Fisher, OT, Indianapolis Colts (31)

I will repeat myself once again here: Left tackles get paid! Based purely on performance, Fisher should be nowhere near this spot. But supply and demand matter. Fisher was coming off of an Achilles injury last offseason and signed a one-year, $8.4 million deal with the Colts. He started 15 games and held up better as a run blocker than a pass blocker, where he allowed seven sacks and 11 quarterback hits. More half of the NFL’s left tackles (18 to be exact) are making at least $11 million per year. Charles Leno’s three-year, $37 million deal with Washington could be a good comp for Fisher.

It’s hard to argue with much of what Kapadia wrote here. The biggest issue for the Colts wasn’t necessarily whiffing on Fisher. It was that plus the fact that they had a chance at Charles Leno and still decided to go with the 30-year-old coming off of an Achilles tear.

But there’s nothing that can be done about that now. The Colts will be on the hunt for a new left tackle this offseason. A big splash shouldn’t be expected in free agency and it’s unlikely a trade-up in the 2022 NFL draft will happen given the lack of picks Chris Ballard has.

That means we could be looking more at a short-term solution in free agency while the team hopes they can find some value in the draft to potentially steal a long-term option.

The Colts have a lot of needs this offseason and with Fisher likely to hit the market, left tackle is near the top of the list.

7 pending free agents the Colts should let walk

With free agency just over a month away, here are 7 players the Colts should let walk.

The Indianapolis Colts are just over a month away from the new league year opening, which means they’ll have their chances to make moves in free agency.

With a solid standing in the salary-cap department, the Colts can make as many moves as they want. It’s unlikely they will make splash additions, though, even if general manager Chris Ballard readjusts his process a bit when it comes to free agency.

The Colts have a number of players who held impactful roles set to hit the market when the middle of March arrives. We previously took a look at 12 pending free agents they should consider re-signing.

Now, it’s time to take a look at the players the Colts should let walk. This doesn’t mean the team should completely abandon these players but it might be best for them to test the market first in case there is a cheaper, younger and better alternative.

This list won’t include every player that the Colts shouldn’t bring back but instead, we’ll focus on the bigger names set to hit the market.

Here are seven pending free agents the Colts should let walk in 2022:

4 Colts who underachieved in 2021

Here is a look at four Colts who underachieved in 2021.

The Indianapolis Colts may have a roster that has a solid foundation built into it over the last few years but there were some players who failed to meet expectations during the 2021 season.

Whether it was due to nagging injuries, a reduced role or simply due to the nature of an athlete underperforming, the Colts weren’t without players who didn’t live up to their potential in 2021.

In order to have underachieved, there needs to be a baseline of expectation. For instance, the Colts signed defensive end Isaac Rochell in free agency. Even at the time, though, we knew he mostly would be a rotational pass rusher at most. So the fact that he didn’t record a sack doesn’t mean he really underperformed because there wasn’t an expectation that he would hold a big role.

After taking a look at the Colts’ players who exceeded expectations, here four players who underachieved in 2021:

1 ruled out, 4 questionable in Colts vs. Raiders

Here are the players with injury designations between the Colts and Raiders in Week 17.

The Indianapolis Colts (9-6) and Las Vegas Raiders (8-7) released their final injury reports on Friday ahead of the Week 17 matchup at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Both injury reports were relatively clean. Only one player was ruled out from the Colts’ side while three were listed as questionable. One of them is a true game-time decision.

The Raiders, meanwhile, only had one player listed with an injury designation.

Some of this is subject to change. Players can be added or removed from the injury report or a status can be changed.

Here’s a quick look at the five players in this matchup with injury designations:

Colts’ Matt Pryor to start at LT if Eric Fisher doesn’t play

If Eric Fisher can’t play, the Colts will lean on Matt Pryor to be the starting LT against the Raiders.

Indianapolis Colts left tackle Eric Fisher is listed as questionable for the regular-season home finale on Sunday against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Due to knee, shoulder and toe injuries, Fisher wasn’t able to log any type of practice throughout the entire week. He did some work on the side on Friday but didn’t participate in any individual or team drills.

Head coach Frank Reich told the media Friday that if Fisher can’t play due to the injuries, the Colts would have to decide between Matt Pryor and Julién Davenport. After trying to keep his plans close to the chest, Reich said it would be Pryor who gets the call.

“That would be the decision that would have to be made,” Reich said laughing. “Okay Joel (Erickson), it will be (Matt) Pryor. It’s not that big of a deal. I’m sorry, it’s Pryor.”

Pryor has worked all over the offensive line for the Colts, mostly on the right side. He’s played some reps at right tackle and right guard so he has experience working with the unit.

Playing the blindside will be a bit different going against two strong edge rushers in Maxx Crosby and Yannick Ngakoue.

The Colts should have the majority of their offensive line back all three players expected to return from the COVID-19 list (two already have) while center Ryan Kelly made his return this week following a personal tragedy.

Colts vs. Raiders: Final injury report in Week 17

Here is the final injury report for the Colts and Raiders in Week 17.

The Indianapolis Colts (9-6) and Las Vegas Raiders (8-7) released their final injury reports on Friday ahead of the Week 17 matchup at Lucas Oil Stadium.

The Colts got a number of players back from the reserve/COVID-19 list this week with a few more left to return over the next day or so. They did rule out one player on their final injury report with three others listed as questionable.

Here’s a look at the final injury report for the Colts in Week 17:

S Andrew Sendejo Concussion DNP DNP DNP Out
T Eric Fisher Knee/Shoulder/Toe DNP DNP DNP Quest.
G Mark Glowinski Illness LP Quest.

Notes

  • The fact that TE Jack Doyle returned to a full practice on Friday bodes well for his chances to play.
  • LT Eric Fisher is a true game-time decision and will be replaced with Matt Pryor if he can’t play.
  • RG Mark Glowinski just came off the COVID-19 list so while he should be expected to play, anything in the NFL is subject to change right now.
  • WR Parris Campbell returned to practice this week but is unlikely to be activated from the injured reserve list.

Here’s a look at the updated injury report for the Raiders (will be updated):

Colts rule out S Andrew Sendejo vs. Raiders in Week 17

Colts’ Andrew Sendejo (concussion) is the only player ruled out in Week 17.

Indianapolis Colts safety Andrew Sendejo was the only player ruled out Friday ahead of the Week 17 matchup with the Las Vegas Raiders, head coach Frank Reich told reporters.

Sendejo has been in the league’s concussion protocol since initially suffering the head injury late in the Week 15 matchup against the New England Patriots. He has yet to practice since being placed in the protocol and this will be his second consecutive game missed.

With Khari Willis being activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list this week, the Colts are likely to roll with Willis and a combination of George Odum and Jahleel Addae.

In other injury news, left tackle Eric Fisher will be questionable. He didn’t practice during the first two days of the week and was seemingly limited on Friday. The final injury report will clear that up when its released later on Friday.

If Fisher can’t go due to his injuries, the Colts will lean on Matt Pryor to be the starter at left tackle.

The Colts also placed long snapper Luke Rhodes on the reserve/COVID-19 list on Friday so he’s unlikely to play on Sunday.

Raiders, Colts Thursday injury report: Colts still missing 3 starters

Colts still missing three starters at Thursday’s practice in prep to face Raiders

There was no change to the injury report Thursday for the Colts. And that was not good news because they had three starters missing on Wednesday and those same three starters were still missing on Thursday.

Starting left tackle Eric Fisher (knee/shoulder/toe), TE Jack Doyle (knee/ankle), and S Andrew Sendejo (concussion) were all missing once again for the Colts further jeopardizing their chances of playing in Sunday’s game.

The only change of any kind to the injury report for either team was Quinton Jefferson returning after resting on Wednesday. The Raiders have had only walk-thrus on Wednesday and Thursday.

The bigger issue for both teams remains those players on the reserve/COVID-19 list. The Raiders currently have 12 players on the list while the Colts have six players on the list including starting QB Carson Wentz who is unvaccinated.

If any of those players test negative, they can return should they be healthy enough to do so. The injured players are a different story. If they were healthy enough to play, they’d be practicing.

Raiders, Colts Wednesday injury report: Colts LT Eric Fisher misses practice

While the Raiders injury report is rather clear, the Colts were without two starters Wednesday

Colts QB Carson Wentz was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list this week which means he could miss Sunday’s game. If he can’t go, rookie Sam Ehlinger figures to start. Wednesday Ehlinger lined up without starting left tackle Eric Fisher protecting his blind side.

Fisher missed Wednesday’s practice with several injuries including knee, shoulder, and toe injuries.

Also missing practice Wednesday for the Colts was starting safety Andrew Sendejo (concussion).

The Raiders injury report was pretty clear. The only players listed as missing were for rest reasons.

This of course doesn’t include TE Darren Waller because he was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list today. He had missed the past four games with knee and back injuries.

Injuries aren’t the biggest concern for the Raiders right now. Waller is one of 11 players currently on Raiders reserve/COVID-19 list. Many of whom could return this week under the NFL’s newly adapted guidelines that allows vaccinated players to test out of the protocol. But that remains to be seen.

Colts could be without entire starting OL vs. Raiders

The Colts could be without their entire starting offensive line in Week 17.

Through injuries, personal matters and COVID-19 issues, the Indianapolis Colts may be without their entire starting offensive line when the Las Vegas Raiders visit Lucas Oil Stadium in Week 17.

The Colts had to make due during the big win over the Arizona Cardinals, but even then they still had one of their starting offensive tackles for the majority of the game.

Here is what the starting offensive line is dealing with as the Colts prepare for Week 17:

  • LT Eric Fisher (knee/toe/pec)
  • LG Quenton Nelson (COVID-19)
  • C Ryan Kelly (personal)
  • RG Mark Glowinski (COVID-19)
  • RT Braden Smith (COVID-19)

Starting at the top, Fisher will be on the injury report this week after he suffered three separate injuries in the 22-16 win over the Cardinals. He left in the second quarter and was ruled out. Now, the Colts may have to go without him depending on his status at the end of the week.

Nelson was placed on the COVID-19 list on Friday before the game against the Cardinals. At least there is still some time for him to test negative, but there is a high risk he can’t come back in time for the game against the Raiders.

The same goes for Glowinski, who was placed on the COVID-19 list on Thursday of last week. At least he has an extra day. Meanwhile, Smith was placed on the list on Monday of this week so he is really in doubt.

Kelly is still dealing with the personal tragedy of losing his unborn daughter and it isn’t clear when he will be back.

The COVID-19 issues may be resolved if the NFL adopts new protocols that force quarantine to be five days instead of 10. That could be huge if these players are asympotmatic.

Regardless, there is still a high chance the Colts are going into the Week 17 matchup without anyone on their starting offensive line.
