Nick Sirianni on Empire State Building: Philly would never celebrate New York

Nick Sirianni thinks the Empire State Building celebrating the Eagles is hilarious because Philly would never, ever celebrate the Giants.

The Empire State Building caused quite a commotion when they lit up in green to celebrate the Philadelphia Eagles following the NFC Championship Game.

The decision sent New Yorkers into a frenzy with many joking that King Kong should descend on the city and destroy the building.

Even NYC Mayor Eric Adams lamented the decision, admitting that the entire Empire State Building fiasco got away from them.

“Listen, that got away from us,” Adams said during a CNN appearance. “The way the Eagles game got away from us with the Giants, we should have lit up in real symbolism the colors of the giant. That blue should have been there.

“Unfortunately, someone did not get the memo at the Empire State Building, but we want to see good sportsmanship. The Giants will be back next year, and the Jets will be back. We’ll be excited when they rebuild their teams.”

Despite the backlash, the Empire State Building revealed last week that it would again light up in green and celebrate the Eagles should they win Super Bowl LVII.

The entire situation is music to the ears of Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni, who laughed at New York celebrating Philadelphia. He found additional amusement in knowing that his city would never, under any circumstances, celebrate the Giants.

“That would not happen in Philadelphia. It just wouldn’t,” Sirianni told Peter King with a smile. “But Eagles fans are everywhere.”

Talk about rubbing salt in the wounds.

Even King, who would otherwise ignore stories like that of the Empire State Building, found the entire display distasteful.

I think, normally, I don’t care about stories like the Empire State Building in New York lighting up in Eagles green after Philadelphia won the NFC title. And it really doesn’t amount to a hill of beans. But it’s just weird. That’s an iconic New York landmark. It’s not the Statue of Liberty, welcoming the huddled masses to America. It’s the most notable landmark in New York City. And now the management people for the Empire State Building say they’ll light up the building in green again, if the Eagles win the Super Bowl. The New York Post said it best: “Empire State Building to New York: Drop dead.”

Maybe Eric Adam and those at the Empire State Building should start paying attention to the perception this is creating and how it’s being perceived.

Empire State Building plans to go green again if Eagles win Super Bowl

If the Philadelphia Eagles win Super Bowl LVII, the Empire State Building intends to go green once again despite the previous outrage.

The Empire State Building sent New Yorkers into a frenzy when it turned green to celebrate the Philadelphia Eagles following their NFC Championship Game win.

The outrage spread far and wide. Members of the New York Giants voiced their displeasure and that was followed by anger from retired members of the New York Jets.

Even NYC Sanitation and some NYC Councilmen piled on. The common ground was that it was entirely unacceptable.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams even lamented the decision for the Empire State Building to go green.

It appears things may get away from them again.

The Empire State Building says it will light up in green once again should the Eagles defeat the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII.

“The Empire State Building will continue its annual practice of being a virtual scoreboard for the Super Bowl, and will then light for the winning team.” an Empire State Realty Trust spokesperson said, via the New York Post.

Ultimately, those at the Empire State Building say the color changes are a way to generate revenue. It’s intended to increase tourism and, ironically, bring in the green. Who actually cares what New Yorkers think?

“They believe they play to billions, and not locals,” a source told The Post.

Empire State Building to turn green again if Eagles win Super Bowl

New Yorkers won’t be happy with the Empire State Building if the Eagles win Super Bowl LVII

The folks behind the lighting at the Empire State Building caused a furor and social media sensation when they turned things green and white to celebrate the Philadelphia Eagles victory in the NFC Championship Game.

The people in charge aren’t backing down if the NFC East champs win the Super Bowl.

They are going to do it again, according to the New York Post.

“The Empire State Building will continue its annual practice of being a virtual scoreboard for the Super Bowl, and will then light for the winning team.” an Empire State Realty Trust spokesperson said.

There is no love lost between New York and Philadelphia. The teams are enemies and the sports fans have a volatile relationship.

The building’s management views the Sunday stunt as a way to attract tourists from around the world to the Big Apple landmark to pay $79 each to visit the observation decks on the 86th and 102nd floors, a source with direct knowledge of the company’s plans told The Post.

“They believe they play to billions, and not locals,” the source said.

Indeed, insiders said execs took a victory lap after the building’s Jan. 29 tweet — titled “Fly Eagles Fly” showing the building lit in Philly color following the victory over San Francisco — garnered 45 million views and countless more on Instagram and TikTok. The building stayed lit green-and-white for hours until the LED display switched to the red and white of the Kansas City Chiefs following their victory in the AFC title game

NYC Mayor Eric Adams laments Empire State Building colors

NYC Mayor Eric Adams admits the Empire State Building lighting up in Eagles green was a bad look and declares, “the Giants will be back!”

When the Empire State Building lit up in Philadelphia Eagles green on Sunday night, the response was swift and angry.

Members of the New York Giants were stunned by the sight, while New Yorkers voiced their displeasure on social media. Everyone — from NYC Sanitation to City Council members to Times Square street performers — was miffed.

Even New York City Mayor Eric Adams was upset with the decision — and the outcome of the Giants’ divisional-round game against the Eagles.

Although the lighting change was planned long before the games were even decided, those in charge clearly didn’t give much thought to the potential fallout. And while the color green may seem insignificant to most, this is New York and New Yorkers take their sports very, very seriously.

You had better believe the Empire State Building will not make this mistake a second time.

We interviewed the actual Empire State Building after its mind-boggling decision to celebrate the Eagles’ win

We spoke to the building that’s under a ton of criticism for lighting up for the Eagles.

Of all the questionable calls made on Sunday in the AFC and NFC championship games — and yes, there were many! — the biggest one wasn’t on the field.

No, it was made by the Empire State Building in New York City, which lit up in green and white to celebrate the Philadelphia Eagles’ Super Bowl 57 berth. It then displayed the Kansas City Chiefs’ red and yellow after the win over the Cincinnati Bengals.

What the what? Why would the iconic skyscraper do such a thing in a city that DESPISES The City of Brotherly Love’s sports franchises (and the hate is mutual. I can attest after spending four years of college outside of Philly)?

As For The Win’s resident native New Yorker, I needed answers. So I hopped on the subway to 34th street, pointed my recorder up and spoke to the building itself.

Empire State Building turns heels, celebrates Eagles’ victory

The Empire State Building infuriated New York sports fans on Sunday when it turned heel and went green to honor the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Empire State Building is an iconic cornerstone of New York City. It not only represents those that call The Big Apple home, but it also represents the many professional sports franchises that play in New York and New Jersey.

For that reason, it came as quite a shock to many New Yorkers on Sunday night when its lights were changed to green. And it wasn’t to honor the New York Jets but rather, to pay tribute to the Philadelphia Eagles after their NFC Championship victory.

The sight outraged most New York sports fans, who took to social media to voice their displeasure. Even New York City council members expressed frustrations.

The New York Daily News asked, “Where’s King Kong when you need him?”

As frustrated as New Yorkers were, the Empire State Building had previously announced its color change schedule to fit in the winners of both the AFC and NFC Championship Games. And after the Kansas City Chiefs took down the Cincinnati Bengals, they swapped it over to red and yellow.

Even with the knowledge that it was pre-planned, seeing the Empire State Building in that ugly green was a stomach-turner for most. The “Fly Eagles Fly” tweet also wasn’t necessary.

Fans of the New York Giants hope they don’t see things lit up in green again two weeks from now.

Empire State Building audibles allegiance from Eagles to Chiefs

The Empire State Building lighting guy had a bad, bad day

It isn’t as bad as celebrating a team from Philadelphia in New York.

However, if you are one of the faithful Jets fans in the Metropolitan Area you had to be wondering what on earth the lighting folks at the Empire State Building were thinking.

After causing an uproar by going to green and white after the Philadelphia Eagles earned their spot in the Super Bowl, the building audibled to flying the colors of the AFC Champion Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.

Twitter stunned at why Empire State Building would be green following Eagles’ 31-7 win over 49ers

The Empire State Building celebrated the Philadelphia Eagles’ NFC Championship Game win, and Twitter was puzzled.

One modern practice is for buildings to light up in team colors following a big win from one of their college or pro sports teams.

Of course, when a building is lighting up in the colors of a rival, it generates plenty of discussion.

Such was the case when the Empire State Building — one of the prime symbols of New York City — on Sunday night was adorned in green following the Philadelphia Eagles’ 31-7 win over the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game at Lincoln Financial Field. It wasn’t even like there was a mistake; the Empire State Building’s official Twitter account even emphasized that they were celebrating the big win for the Giants’ arch rivals.

Here are the best reactions from Twitter.

The Empire State Building celebrated the Eagles’ Super Bowl berth and fans thought it was so lame

When you don’t read the room …

The New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles are NFC East division rivals. But someone should let the lighting folks at the Empire State Building know that rivalries are supposed to mean something.

The Eagles reached the Super Bowl on Sunday with a dominant 31-7 win over the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game. It was a win that was never really in doubt, especially after both Niners quarterbacks Brock Purdy and Josh Johnson suffered injuries.

And while the Empire State Building lights up to celebrate and commemorate different causes on a nightly basis, you know Philadelphia would never light up its landmarks to celebrate a New York Giants conference title. That’s what made the green, white and green Empire State Building so surprising to see on Sunday.

I mean, they could have at least waited for the AFC Championship Game to conclude and use both team colors. Otherwise, it just looked silly to see the New York skyscraper celebrating the Philadelphia Eagles.

Fans weren’t particularly kind to the Twitter account’s admin either.

See it: Empire State Building lights up in Giants blue

The Empire State Building stood tall on Friday night, glowing blue in honor of the New York Giants ahead of their Wild Card Playoff game.

The New York Giants will take on the Minnesota Vikings in a Wild Card clash this Sunday in Minneapolis. It’s the team’s first playoff game since 2016 and there is a buzz in the air.

Although the Giants enter the game as underdogs, many across the nation are anticipating an upset. Some even believe Brian Daboll’s club might make an unexpected run.

Throughout the Tri-State area, fans are beginning to believe once again. The old Giants mystique has returned and in that vein, the Empire State Building lit up in blue on Friday night.

The Giants and their fans hope this isn’t the final time they see the Empire State Building glowing blue. In fact, they’d like to see it at least three more times over the coming weeks.
