Just a few days ago, four Spartans and assistant coach Mike Garland went to go watch the top high school basketball prospect in the country, 5-star Emoni Bates, play Marcus Bingham Jr.’s brother Mykel in a big high school basketball match-up. Today, Bates returns to Michigan State on Sunday to watch their last regular-season game of the year against Ohio State. The news was first reported by Corey Evans from Rivals.

Bates was last in town for the Spartans home game loss to Maryland. While there is still a chance that Bates goes straight to the NBA after high school, if the NBA tweaks their rules before 2022, MSU has put themselves in a prime spot to secure the commitment of the Ypsilanti, Michigan native.

Bates is just one of a number of football and basketball recruits who will be in town today. Five of the best local high school football players in the state of Michigan will be in the building along with 5-star shooting guard Max Christie and 4-star PG Jaden Akins.

On Thursday night, the consensus top prospect in the 2022 class Emoni Bates, who plays for Lincoln High School in Ypsilanti, Michigan, had a big match-up against Mykel Bingham and Grand Rapids Catholic Central. Four Michigan State Basketball players were in attendance for the big game and they were accompanied by an MSU assistant coach.

The four players were Cassius Winston, Rocket Watts, Aaron Henry, and of course, Marcus Bingham Jr. was there as well to watch his younger brother. The four Spartans were flanked by MSU assistant coach Mike Garland. Bates was in attendance for Michigan State’s home game against Maryland back in February.

The information comes from Andrew Slater who was in attendance.

Bates went off with the Spartans in attendance, dropping 48 points and 13 rebounds on a solid team in Grand Rapids Catholic Central. This only reaffirms what everyone already knows: Emoni Bates is the best prospect in high school. Period.

It will continue to be fascinating to monitor this situation, as it is starting to seem like this will end up being a decision between Michigan State or the NBA for Bates, and any chance of immediate access to the NBA would rely on major rule changes that have not yet been announced and might not come to be at all.

This has been an exciting week for Michigan State fans. On the same night where MSU Basketball knocked off Illinois in a one-point road win, the football team got their man in head coach Mel Tucker. With Spartan fans possibly more excited than ever for the future, there is one more glimmer of hope on the horizon, and that comes in the form of Emoni Bates. Bates is the top player in the 2022 recruiting class and according to Adam Zagoria of ZAGSBLOG he will be in East Lansing this weekend for the Spartans big game against Maryland.

There is a ton of intrigue around Bates, who has been compared to great players like Kevin Durant. As of right now, MSU looks like the clear favorite to recruit Bates if he isn’t able to jump straight to the NBA. If he does come to East Lansing, he will absolutely be a one-and-done player, but this is still a huge deal.

College GameDay will be in town for the big game between MSU vs. Maryland as well.
