All 4 pro wrestling references Paul Walter Hauser snuck into his Emmys speech

“Do things a little bit different. Yo, Brian Walsh, get the tables.”

Paul Walter Hauser has emerged as one of the most versatile actors working today. Who else could steal lines from Jamie Taco, work security at the Reno Sheriff’s Department, learn karate at Cobra Kai and bring a truly creepy serial killer to life in the span of three years?

That latter role — as Larry Hall in Apple TV’s true crime miniseries Black Bird — earned Hauser his first Emmy award Monday night. And, since this is the same guy who showed up to All Elite Wrestling’s Dynamite with his Golden Globe in tow to feud with Jeff Jarrett (wee woo), he made sure to pepper up his minute-long speech of rhyming couplets with a handful of pro wrestling references to balance out the mushiness of his heartfelt thanks.

Here’s each one, broken down.

The Emmys’ in memoriam segment featured a beautiful performance of the Friends theme song for Matthew Perry

This was such a moving Emmys tribute to Matthew Perry and many other television greats who have recently died.

The Emmys always honor the television greats that have passed on during the annual ceremony, but Monday night’s in memoriam hit especially hard.

The ceremony welcomed singer Charlie Puth and country duo The War and Treaty to perform the theme song for Friends, which pays homage to recently deceased show star Matthew Perry.

The performance of The Rembrandts’ “I’ll Be There for You” took on added significance as it bid farewell to many notable names that have died since the last Emmys ceremony.

The video ended on a still of Perry, whose passing is just still such a sad reality after the Friends actor died last October at the age of 54.

The performance here was very moving, and you have to feel the love in the room for Perry and so many of these wonderful television figures who have passed on with how this song weaved into the in memoriam tribute.

Pedro Pascal got back at Kieran Culkin’s Golden Globes gag with hilarious dig during Emmys

Pedro Pascal strikes back!

Actor Pedro Pascal took his new fake feud with fellow actor Kieran Culkin during Monday night’s Emmys to a new level.

After Culkin took a playful dig at Pascal after beating him at the Golden Globes earlier this month for his performance on Succession, Pascal got one back at Culkin during the Emmys ceremony.

Pascal, wearing a brace for a shoulder injury, joked that his Golden Globes competitor “beat the [expletive]” out of him, which is why he was injured.

The camera cut to Culkin giving a very serious look at the camera, fully leaning into the gag. The whole crowd got a huge kick out of it.

Some NSFW language to follow.

This was a very funny way for Pascal to pay Culkin back for a gag with a gag, and we hope this newfound hilarity inspires these two to collaborate on a project sometime in the future.

We hope Pascal heals up soon, and we hope Culkin starts plotting his awards show rebuttal to this awards show rebuttal.

John Oliver tried to list all the Liverpool starters during Emmy acceptance speech

Now this is how you show your fandom.

Comedian John Oliver didn’t waste his Emmy speech on Monday night by paying tribute to his favorite football team (you know, the actual football).

After he and his Last Week Tonight team won the Emmy for Outstanding Scripted Variety Series, Oliver took advantage of the time left on the clock for him to give his acceptance speech by naming the starting eleven of the Liverpool Football Club.

Oliver rattled off name after name before he was told to wrap it up and let the show keep moving on to the next category.

This is the kind of energy we need more of at awards shows: just showering your favorite sports teams with love while you accept your award.

We can bet that everyone at Liverpool appreciated this unexpected shoutout, as Oliver easily became the Liverpool fan of the day.

Maybe Bradley Cooper will do the same for the Philadelphia Eagles if he wins at the Academy Awards in March?

Christina Applegate received a powerful standing ovation at 2024 Emmys after health struggles

This was such a cool moment.

Longtime film and television actor Christina Applegate received a standing ovation during Monday night’s Emmy ceremony after seemingly retiring from on-camera work because of her health.

Applegate shared her multiple sclerosis diagnosis in 2021 and hinted at retiring from working in front of the camera last year after a multi-decade career that featured standout performances on Married… with Children, Anchorman, Dead to Me and Samantha Who?

As she was escorted to the stage to present an award, the entire crowd at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles stood and cheered for her, which moved Applegate deeply.

She followed that moment with a very funny, moving introduction before presenting the Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series Emmy to The Bear‘s Ayo Edebiri.

Applegate has been one of the funnier actors of her generation, and this was a very fitting tribute as she transitions into a new stage of her film and television career.

Harrison Ford was surprisingly snubbed for his supporting role in the Apple TV+ comedy, Shrinking, and the show failed to crack into a loaded Outstanding Comedy category.

The Primetime Emmy Awards are scheduled for September 18 at 8 p.m. ET, but this could change depending on what happens with the WGA strike.
