Browns Baker Mayfield receives death threats according to his wife

Mayfield’s wife threw strong out allegations about how the QB is treated on social media:

The Cleveland Browns are no strangers to drama during the 2021 NFL season. The problems between QB Baker Mayfield and WR Odell Beckham Jr. led to the receiver departure from the team earlier this season, for example.

A year following a successful first year under Andrew Berry and Kevin Stefanski, Browns fans had hoped that the drama of the past couple of decades was finally behind them. Unfortunately, it has continued to follow the franchise into 2021.

The struggles on the field have led to a 7-8 record going into the final two weeks of the season. While the team still has a very real shot at winning the AFC North, their quarterback has recently received death threats, among far less serious social media negativity, according to his wife.

Posted to her Instagram story, Emily Mayfield noted death threats, lies and disrespect coming to the Cleveland quarterback through social media. A screenshot of her post from Wednesday:

The Browns quarterback has struggled much of the season and been the target of fans ire for his inconsistent play. While his play has not been up to par, death threats are never appropriate responses from fans.

Mayfield and the Browns have two games left to salvage their season. These new accusations from his wife could lead to more non-football-related questions in the lead-up to Monday Night Football.

Emily Mayfield issues apology and explanation Monday for social media post share

Emily Mayfield thought she was sharing a compliment of her husband. Monday, she apologized for sharing the post:

The Cleveland Browns have a lot of concerns to work out with two of their biggest games of the season right in front of them. What happens on the field is always going to be the most important but off-the-field drama has a way of finding its way to impact the on-the-field performance.

Following Sunday’s win against the Detroit Lions, Baker Mayfield refused media availability and his wife, Emily Mayfield, shared a post on social media that seemed to attack the quarterback’s teammates.

Mayfield did speak on Monday and gave a blunt evaluation of his performance.

His wife also shared an apology and explanation of sharing the post that she did:

With the Baltimore Ravens coming up in Week 12, the Browns need to be as focused as they can be if they hope to get a victory. Moving forward on Monday from things that don’t matter on the field can help that happen.

WATCH: Baker Mayfield’s wife defends comments about ‘fair weather fans’

The 2019 season has not been kind to the Browns or quarterback Baker Mayfield.

The 2019 season has not been kind to the Browns or quarterback Baker Mayfield.

This week, Mayfield’s wife Emily took to Instagram to defend her husband and his team … then had to defend herself.

Late Monday, Mrs. Mayfield posted a black screen to her IG story with a short note reading, “Fairweather fans are HILARIOUS TO ME. Get out of here.”

Browns’ fans did not take kindly to the message. Tuesday, Emily clarified that she noted talking about legitimate Cleveland fans (which, to be fair, would not have had a real opportunity to be “fair weather,” during the actual season). The former first overall draft pick’s with explained she, “didn’t expect to ruffle so many feathers,” adding “No, I was not directing that at the die-hard, loyal fans who have stuck around for years. I’m talking about the idiots who say horrible things about my husband and the team when we lose and are obsessing when we win. That is laughable to me.”

Emily added one final note, “…loyal fans, I see you!”

The Browns are 3-6, better than only the winless Bengals in the division, and host the Steelers (5-4) Thursday.
