Charles Barkley has best finish at American Century Championship, even after Sunday hangover

“A little tired, a little hungover, but I kept battling.”

STATELINE, Nev. — Charles Barkley and the American Century Championship: the gift that keeps on giving.

Barkley finished in 58th place with minus-4 points, making winners of everyone who bet he would finish in the top 75 this year. In fact, it was his best finish at the event. He had positive points after the opening round for the first time.

“It feels really good. I put a lot of time and effort in,” Barkley said. “I’ve been working hard for the last few years. The last couple of years actually haven’t been bad. I had a shot at it.”

Barkley was proud he recovered after a rough start to Sunday’s round.

But he admitted there might have been a reason he was sluggish to start the round.

“A little tired, a little hungover, but I kept battling,” he said. “But I played really, really well the first two days, but this probably was my best day because I didn’t have any good stuff going early but I kept battling. I’m really proud about today’s round because, like I say, I started out struggling and I found a way to get it together. But I played great the first two days.”

Mardy Fish captured the title on Sunday at Edgewood Tahoe with 83 points. Joe Pavelski was second with 79 points while Annika Sorenstam was third with 68.

Mardy Fish captures 2024 American Century Championship, second ACC celebrity title

The ACC set an attendance record of 77,049 fans over the week.

STATELINE, Nev. — After finishing second last year in a thrilling duel, Mardy Fish might have had a small chip on his shoulder.

But Fish is known for handling his emotions well, as well as having a dry, sarcastic sense of humor.

He made up for last year’s disappointing second-place finish by capturing the title on Sunday in the American Century Championship at Edgewood Tahoe.

He finished with 83 points in the Modified Stableford scoring system, after scoring 26 on Sunday, following a blistering tournament-record 34 points on Saturday.

Joe Pavelski was hot on his heels all week and finished second with 79 points. Annika Sorenstam was third with 68 and John Smoltz finished fourth with 64.

Fish won $150,000 for first place, an increase over previous payouts. Last year Curry won $125,000. Fish’s score was one point off the tournament record of 84 set by Billy Joe Tolliver in 2010.

Fish joked when asked what he would do with the money.

“I mean, I got bills to pay, man. I live in Los Angeles. I have two kids right there that are very expensive,” he said, smiling and pointing to his two children in the media room Sunday. “It kind of shows where the tournament’s going and where it’s headed and continuing to sort of grow the American Century Championship throughout.”

Fish also won the ACC in 2020, when no spectators were allowed at Edgewood. His entire payday that yer was donated to charities around Lake Tahoe.

The start of Sunday’s third round was delayed about a half hour due to rain around Lake Tahoe.

Fish said that delay did not affect him.

“No big deal. “It gives you time to go mingle with your buddies you haven’t seen. I saw Larry Fitz (Fitzgerald), he was coming off No. 9, going to 10. And we were just about to tee off — first time I’d seen him all week. We’re good buddies; he’s a Minnesota boy and so am I,” Fish said. “I was texting with Travis Kelce all week. And he’s, I’m going to find you tomorrow, period. And we had the delay. So you get to kind of see those people that — I don’t see those guys very often other than here or maybe Orlando or something like that.”

Pavelski has announced he will retire from hockey, He played for the San Jose Sharks and then the Dallas Stars.

Having that time off could help his already solid golf game though.

“This is my best showing. I think if I could replicate this here the next few years, if we get the opportunity, hopefully we have a chance to lift that trophy like Fish is doing,” Pavelski said. “Golf is a game I love. Definitely going to be playing, practicing, trying to get a little better at it. But you get in a tournament you never know how fully it’s going to play out.”

The ACC set an attendance record of 77,049 fans over the week.

Photos: Celebrities hit the links at the 2024 American Century Championship

Edgewood Tahoe is the place to be this weekend.

One of the best weeks of the year is here, as the American Century Championship kicked off Friday at Edgewood Tahoe in Stateline, Nevada.

The annual event brings together some of the biggest celebrities in sports from all backgrounds, whether it be current NFL stars like Travis Kelce and Trevor Lawrence to legends of the game like Annika Sorenstam and more.

NFL wide receiver Adam Thielen leads after the first round with 24 points, though Mardy Fish is right on his tail with 23. Last year, Stephen Curry made an ace en route to winning, though he’s not in the field this year because of his obligations with the U.S. Olympic men’s basketball team.

Here’s a look at the best photos from the 2024 American Century Championship:

Both Kelce brothers will be playing in the American Century Championship.

RENO, Nev. — For the first time, both Kelce brothers will be playing in the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament.

The tournament is July 10-14 at Edgewood Tahoe.

Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce has played in the tournament since 2020. This will be the first appearance for retired Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce.

One person who will likely not be in attendance, according to tournament officials, is Travis’ girlfriend, Taylor Swift.

Travis Kelce is usually paired with his Chiefs teammate Patrick Mahomes in the ACC, but Mahomes has not yet committed to playing in it this summer.

“Taylor Swift will be performing her summer concert tour in Europe at that time, so do not ask me that question,” Phil Weidinger, representing the ACC, told the media.

Swift will be performing in Zurich on Wednesday, July 10, and has two days off before her next show in Milan on Saturday, July 13. At the most recent Super Bowl, she traveled from Japan to Las Vegas and back to her concert tour.

The Kelce brothers have one of the top-rated podcasts, “New Heights,” in which they talk about the NFL and other sports as well as off-field interests. During a recent episode, Travis discussed whether he’d be making an appearance in “Happy Gilmore 2.”

Jason Kelce is a seven-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion with the Philadelphia Eagles. He retired after the past season, his 13th in the NFL. He is among the 88 players committed to this year’s event.

Other first-time players include MLB legends Alex Rodriguez and Albert Pujols, NHL players Matthew Tkachuk and John Carlson, “Today Show” host Carson Daly, NFL quarterbacks Trevor Lawrence and Joe Flacco, six-time NBA All-Star Blake Griffin, former host of “The Bachelor” Chris Harrison, actor Rob McElhenney, former NBA forward Chandler Parsons, NBA player Austin Reeves and former soccer star Taylor Twellman.

Travis Kelce is no stranger to smothering opponents on the football field for the Kansas City Chiefs. He can also mash a golf ball.

Two weeks ago, Kelce and Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes topped Golden State Warriors stars Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson in Capital One’s The Match in Las Vegas. Now, Kelce has another golfing accolade he can add to his resume: long drive champion.

Kelce and other celebrities are at Lake Tahoe this week for the 2023 American Century Championship at Edgewood Tahoe. It’s one of the best fan events of the year, as celebrities take on one another in a modified Stableford format over 54 holes. Tony Romo, the defending champion, is the favorite to win. Action gets underway Friday.

However, the two-time Super Bowl winning tight end gets bragging rights for being the longest off the tee. During Thursday’s long drive competition, Kelce mashed his tee shot with a carry (!!!) of 362 yards to win the title.

Golfweek’s Best 2022: Top public and private courses in Nevada

Shadow Creek, the top public-access golf course in Nevada, requires a hefty green fee, but there are other options.

Shadow Creek, the top-rated public-access golf course in Nevada, is famed for being unlike just about any other daily-fee or casino-operated layout anywhere. It’s a Tom Fazio-created oasis hidden out of reach for most golfers.

In general, players must stay at an MGM Resorts International property to obtain access, and a round at Shadow Creek includes a limousine ride to the course. The layout, recently made even more famous with several made-for-tv and PGA Tour competitions, isn’t really looking to boost rounds played and boasts a green fee that can reach as high as a reported $1,000. Golfweek’s Best raters have ranked it as the No. 10 course built in the U.S. since 1960.

But there are plenty of other public-access options around Las Vegas and across Nevada. Keep scrolling to see the best of them.

Golfweek’s Best offers many lists of course rankings, with that of top public-access courses in each state among the most popular. All the courses on this list allow public access in some fashion, be it standard daily green fees, through a resort or by staying at an affiliated hotel. If there’s a will, there’s a tee time.

Also popular are the Golfweek’s Best rankings of top private courses in each state, and that list for Nevada’s private offerings is likewise included below.

Watch: Steph Curry just can’t miss, drains 97-yard approach for eagle at American Century

The king of the long ball was at it again on Friday.

Steph Curry is no stranger to the long ball. He’s arguably in the top five most influential NBA players of all-time because of his incredible ability to drain three-pointers from all over the court.

Well, at this week’s American Century Championship, a golf tournament played in Lake Tahoe with a field full of stars from across sports, entertainment and more, Curry impressed with another long make.

On the 13th hole of Edgewood Tahoe, Curry had a 97-yard approach shot from the middle of the fairway.

And like Tom Brady a few years ago during the Match, he pulled the string on a wedge and found nothing but the bottom of the cup. And his reaction with dad, Dell, and brother, Seth, might have been better than the shot!
