Why we need to see more depth from Paul Chryst and the Wisconsin offense tomorrow

Why we need to see more depth from Paul Chryst and the Wisconsin offense tomorrow

Wisconsin’s offense was bland in the team’s 16-10 loss against Penn State last Saturday.

Yes, the unit found success between the 20s and was able to consistently move the ball against a really good Penn State defense. But when it mattered in the red zone, the Badgers made crucial mistakes—fumbles and penalties—and lacked schematic success.

As Bally Sports’ Dave Heller hints at, when a team picks up 29 first downs and travels inside the opposing red zone four times, the team usually scores a lot of points and wins the football game. That obviously didn’t happen.

So, why did Penn State safety Jaquan Brisker say playing the Badger offense was like playing someone in Madden (meaning once they found something that worked they kept going to it)? Because Paul Chryst’s offense lacked depth and deception all afternoon.

Look at this clip from last year’s win at Michigan. Pryor comes across in pre-snap motion, Jalen Berger running the ball is one option and TE Jake Ferguson ends up leaking out and finishing with a big gain.

Looks like this can be related to pitch sequencing in baseball. When a pitcher throws a fastball on the inside corner, they do so for a strike but they also do so to set up the next pitch. It’s likely a changeup down and in immediately follows, as the batter’s eye level and speed were set up by the previous pitch.

This is what a successful Badger offense looks like with Mertz at quarterback, Ferguson at tight end and either Mellusi or Berger in the backfield: Each offense look has multiple dimensions, Chryst can call different plays off the look and the plays can be called in different scenarios.

These are looks and motions we just simply did not see last Saturday.

While the struggles of the offensive line and Graham Mertz were big reasons behind Wisconsin’s red-zone struggles last Saturday, Chryst is partially to blame here as well.

Saturday’s game against Eastern Michigan needs to see the Badgers use pre-snap motion like referred to above and it needs to see a gameplan with more depth at all levels.

Eastern Michigan presents the perfect matchup for this to happen and the perfect tune-up for the unit before Notre Dame and Michigan. Momentum is real here, and we need to see Chryst find his groove along with his star players.

Wisconsin HC Paul Chryst comments on Jalen Berger’s status within the RB room

Wisconsin HC Paul Chryst comments on Jalen Berger’s status within the RB room

One of Wisconsin football’s major storylines during and after Week 1’s 16-10 loss to Penn State was the playing time, or lack thereof, of sophomore running back Jalen Berger.

Berger figured to enter the season as one of the main contributors in the backfield, alongside Clemson transfer Chez Mellusi and Isaac Guerendo. Well, he ended up not playing a single snap during the contest while Mellusi carried the ball 31 times and Guerendo 13.

After the game, Chryst said it was more of what Mellusi and Guerendo were doing than what Berger wasn’t.

“Jalen’s had a good approach — we also like what Chez and Isaac have done,” Chryst said. “The way the game played out, we weren’t thinking we needed to go with three (tailbacks) at the time…Just because he didn’t play doesn’t mean he’s doing something wrong. It’s also (we) liked what Chez did and Isaac did.”

The answer was typical Chryst coach-speak and didn’t provide much clarity about the situation.

Well, today the Badger head coach spoke more clearly about the sophomore running back, saying there “isn’t a sideshow going on” with him in the backfield.

“With Jalen, he’s had a good week of practice,” Chryst said. “He was doing some good things before…A part of it is we had a lot of snaps last game. But I don’t know how many times we really felt like we were in a great rhythm. I think that always helps when you can get guys in and guys in a rhythm…But I’ve liked the way that Jalen has practiced this week. There is not a sideshow going on. He’s a guy that has had success before and was young last year, a true freshman. As long as he continues to approach it the right way and work, which he’s been doing, had a good week of practice. His opportunities will come.”

If Berger comes on and carries the ball a lot against Eastern Michigan it will mirror his 2020 campaign in a lot of ways, as Berger didn’t see the field in the team’s opener against Illinois yet came on and was a key piece of the offense during their next contest.

Only time will tell whether Berger figures to be a big piece of the backfield this season. From what Chryst said today, it seems like he’s still very much in the rotation to receive snaps moving forward.

– The EMU offense was able to throw the ball – it led the MAC with 283 yards per game – but it struggled to consistently move the ball, the running game wasn’t great, and there weren’t a whole lot of long marches. Now the program needs to come up with a quarterback.

Mike Glass turned into a MAC star, rolling up over 3,000 yards with 24 touchdowns, but he’s done. Preston Hutchinson is a veteran backup who hit 75% of his throws for 462 yards and three scores in his limited work, but on the way is Southern Utah transfer Chris Helbig, a 6-4 bomber who could step in on Day One.

The receiving corps will be missing Arthur Jackson and Mathew Sexton, but leading target Quian Williams is back after catching 52 passes for 661 yards and a team-high six scores. Junior Dylan Drummond led the team with 55 catches as a short-range target, and senior TE Bryson Cannon is coming off a good first season – catching 20 passes with two scores – coming from the JUCO ranks.

There aren’t a slew of stars on the line, but there’s a whole lot of experience with four starters expected to return – all of them underclassmen last season. The pass protection was strong, but the line didn’t do a ton for the running game. There’s good depth to work into the mix, too. Now the team needs to find someone to run the ball.

Leading rusher Shaq Vann is done after running for 715 yards. Senior Willie Parker is a smallish speedster who got in a little work, but he only ran for 142 yards and two scores. After Parker the Eagles will rely on the recruiting class to find more help.
