Former Rutgers QB Cole Snyder joins Eastern Michigan

Cole Snyder commits out of the transfer portal.

For the third time in his college career, Cole Snyder is changing schools. After spending three years at Rutgers and two years at the University of Buffalo, Snyder will take his talents to Eastern Michigan in 2024. While Snyder will be changing schools, he is staying in the MAC Conference.

The Lakewood native is coming off a productive season for the University of Buffalo. During the 2023 campaign, Snyder added 2,109 passing yards and 13 passing touchdowns to his resume. In his two years as a Bill, Snyder recorded 31 passing touchdowns.

While Snyder’s time at Buffalo was cut short, he made a lasting impression. During the 2022 campaign, he earned the starting role. With him under center, the Bills went 7-6 and won the Camellia Bowl. That season, he became the third quarterback in program history to surpass 3,000 yards, joining Drew Willy and Tyree Jackson.

As Eastern Michigan prepares to welcome their new QB, they are hoping he can replicate his past success. Regardless of where he has been, Snyder has given his team a chance to win. During his stint at Rutgers, the talented senior completed 21 of his 31 passes.

He will be looking to revitalize an Eagles team that finished the 2023 campaign with a 6-7 record. In conference play, they went 4-4.

Detroit Lions sign undrafted free agent wide receiver Dylan Drummond

Drummond impressed enough in his rookie minicamp tryout to earn a contract

Today the Detroit Lions announced that they’ve signed Eastern Michigan wide receiver Dylan Drummond. Over the weekend, the Lions invited 10 players to a rookie minicamp in Allen Park. The strong impression earned Drummond a contract.

During his 52 games played at Eastern Michigan, Drummond had 183 receptions for 2028 yards and 14 touchdowns. This past season, he averaged a career high of 15.9 yards per reception for the Eagles. He was also a kick and punt returner during portions of his five year career at EMU with 39 total returns under his belt.

At the Eastern Michigan Pro Day, he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.62 seconds. Meanwhile, he posted 33″ vertical jump and had a 3-cone drill time of 6.86 seconds. Standing 6’0″ and 194 pounds, he doesn’t have blazing speed but he has shown good fluidity to run and create yards after the catch.

Since the news of wide receiver Jameson Williams being suspended for 6 games, the Lions have made their intentions clear of upgrading the wide receiver room. They added North Carolina wide receiver Antoine Green in the 7th round of the 2023 NFL Draft. They’ve also added undrafted free agents Keytaon Thompson and Chase Cota. There’s a chance that one of these players stick on the roster, maybe it could be Drummond out of Eastern Michigan.

Michigan State football WR transfer Terry Lockett commits to EMU

Former Michigan State WR Terry Lockett has found a new home:

Terry Lockett left the Michigan State football program midway through the 2022 season to preserve eligibility while entering the NCAA transfer portal. In his MSU career, Lockett caught 4 passes for 22 yards.

Now, Lockett has found his new home, staying in the state of Michigan. Eastern Michigan has secured the commitment of the former Michigan State wide receiver.

Eastern Michigan coach got a hilarious french fry bath after team’s historic Potato Bowl win

That’s a lot of french fries.

Eastern Michigan celebrated the team’s first bowl win since 1987 by loading up on carbs.

The Eagles topped the San Jose State Spartans 41-27 in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, and the prize for the winning coach was a french fry bath for the ages.

This spud’s for you, Eastern Michigan coach Chris Creighton. His players delighted in dumping a big tub full of fries on top of Creighton’s head.

Creighton also got to hoist a big bowl of potatoes in the air for his team’s big bowl win. Get it? Bowl win, big bowl of potatoes. Okay, let’s just get to the french fry bath.

Well, that was certainly one way to celebrate your team winning your potato-themed bowl game.

Kudos to the Eastern Michigan football team for finally getting over the bowl hump after more than 30 years. We bet that everyone on this team will go on a starch break for a bit after this french fry-filled wonderland.

Famous Idaho Potato Bowl What Happened

– It wasn’t exactly Colts vs Vikings, but as momentum swings go this was about as jarring as it gets. San Jose State was rolling. It got up fast and it should’ve been a lot worse than 13-0 with a missed field goal as part of the first eight minutes. But on the second touchdown the extra point was blocked and returned for two. Eastern Michigan didn’t slow down after that.

– Down 13-2, the Eagles took their next drive for a touchdown, came up with a goal line stand and roared back down the field 96 yards for another score, and it kept on coming on the way to a 30-13 halftime lead and a 33 straight points overall before the Spartans finally broke the gloom late in the third.

San Jose State had  too many missed opportunities and mistakes with two failed fourth down conversions and three turnovers. Once Eastern Michigan got comfortable it was unstoppable from there. The game turned into a rout in the second quarter with two long Eagle drives and an interception leading to a short score.

– In a losing cause, San Jose State QB Chevan Cordeiro could’ve been the player of the game. He completed 26-of-44 passes for 366 yards and three scores with two picks, and ran nine times for 50 yards and a touchdown.

– Rushing Yards: San Jose State 132 (5.3 yards per carry) – Eastern Michigan 118 (2.9 yards per carry)

– San Jose State outgained Eastern Michigan 498 yards to 416.

Famous Idaho Potato Bowl What It All Means

1987. That was the last time Eastern Michigan won a bowl game – the 1987 California. It was also the last time the program won more than seven games. Don’t let it be lost just how far EMU has come under head coach Chris Creighton. This is the first time it had back-to-back winning seasons since 1988 and 1989 – success is a new thing for the Eagles.

San Jose State didn’t exactly let this get away, but it sure didn’t capitalize on its opportunities. The 7-5 season was hardly bad for a program that had just one winning campaign since 2012, but after a good start to the bowl and the season this was a dud of a finish. It hadn’t won a bowl game since 2015 head coach Brent Brennan is 0-2 in bowls after losing the 2020 Arizona.

Eastern Michigan Eagles Preview 2022

Eastern Michigan needs to be graded on a curve.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, head coach Chris Creighton and the program won’t hear about anything other than winning seasons, MAC Championships, and bowl games being the norm, but it wasn’t all that long ago when the bar was set at not getting totally annihilated.

No, Eastern Michigan hasn’t won a bowl game under Creighton – the program is 1-5 all-time – but he has accounted for four of the six appearances.

Really, how bad was Eastern Michigan? From 1996 to 2015 the program only won more than four games once.

Now, after eight years under Creighton, this might be his best team yet with a ton of talent returning on offense, a whole lot happening up front on defense, and with a bowl game now a formality if everything goes right. That starts with …

Eastern Michigan Eagles Preview 2022: Offense

The offense needs some work. Overall it wasn’t bad – it averaged 30 points and 381 yards per game – but there wasn’t any running game to speak of and the passing attack wasn’t consistent enough. Fortunately, the attack is loaded with experience and potential upgrades. The big question though is …

Quarterback – one has to emerge and take the gig. Ben Bryant went back to Cincinnati, Preston Hutchinson left for Chattanooga, and Austin Smith is the lone holdover with every shot to make the job his. However, Cam’Ron McCoy is an interesting prospect from Cincinnati, and former Missouri Tiger and Troy Trojan Taylor Powell is like the best option.

The receiving corps has the parts no matter who the main man at QB is. 5-8 Hassan Beydoun led the team with 97 catches for 1,015 yards and four scores, and Dylan Grumman helped with 64 grabs. Outside of tight end, just about everyone of note is back.

The top four offensive linemen are expected to be back around First Team All-MAC guard Sidy Sow and Second Team All-MAC performers Brian Dooley at one tackle spot. Now they need to do more for a ground game that averaged 119 yards per game and 3.4 yards per carry.

The rushing attack might not have been amazing when now-departed Jawon Hamilton wasn’t rumbling, but former Iowa transfer Samson Evans barreled for 13 touchdowns and Darius Boone Jr. was second on the team with 451 yards and six scores.

Eastern Michigan Eagles Preview 2022: Defense

The defense didn’t do enough on third downs, there weren’t any tackles for loss, and overall it allowed 436 yards and 30 points per game. There’s hope, though, with an experience defensive front and help from the transfer portal for the linebacking corps.

Tariq Spikes led the team with 90 stops in the middle of the linebacking corps, but he needs help around him in the 4-2-5 with Terry Myrick gone. Boston College transfer Joe Sparacio should be a factor.

The line has a good veterans in Alex Merritt, but hybrid end Jose Ramirez is the most important playmaker of the bunch with a team high 12 tackles for loss and 6.5 tackles for loss for a team that didn’t have a whole lot of big plays behind the line.

The secondary will get the most attention through fall camp. There aren’t a slew of big-time playmakers returning, but Kempton Shine is a good-tackling corner and safety Blake Bogan made 45 stops.
