Eastern Illinois transfer guard Marvin Johnson commits to Oklahoma

Eastern Illinois transfer guard Marvin Johnson announced he is committing to Oklahoma on Sunday evening.

The final roster spot for new Oklahoma head coach Porter Moser’s first team has been filled, as Eastern Illinois transfer guard Marvin Johnson announced on Sunday evening that he would be taking his talents to Norman to join the Sooners.

A local product originally from Ardmore, Oklahoma who went on to attend Edmond North High School, Johnson looks to be another very solid addition to the roster in what has been an offseason filled with quality transfer additions for Moser and the Sooners.

Last season in 26 games with Eastern Illinois, Johnson averaged 15.3 points, 5.2 assists and 4.7 rebounds per game. Certainly a quality stat line in a solid basketball league in the Ohio Valley Conference.

It will be interesting to see where Johnson fits into the rotation with Oklahoma along with the other guards, but he looks to have the potential to be a legitimate addition to the roster. Moser’s highly successful first offseason in Norman rolls on with the team now having every spot filled as the summer months approach.

The Badgers are one of the hottest teams in college basketball right now, along with several other Big Ten schools including No. 3-ranked Iowa and No. 5-ranked Illinois. Forward Micah Potter also seems to have taken the next step forward this season, with a phenomenal 19 points, five rebounds, three assists, and three steals against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Green Bay lost its first game of the season against the Minnesota Golden Gophers 99-69, but the Phoenix will be a much tougher opponent than the Panthers or Golden Lions were last week. UW-Green Bay is led by head coach Will Ryan this season, son of legendary Wisconsin head coach Bo Ryan.

Why Wisconsin basketball should not overlook Eastern Illinois tomorrow night

The Badgers have a tough opening matchup against a senior-led Panthers team

The Badgers open the season tomorrow night at the Kohl Center, against a team that Wisconsin is very familiar with. The Eastern Illinois Panthers roll into Madison for the second straight year in a home opener, and last year’s edition of this game was tougher than the final score looked.

Wisconsin defeated EIU 65-52 at home in a game that was within single digits nearly the whole way through. Eastern Illinois returns their entire core unit from an offense that averaged over 74 points per game a year ago. Leading scorer Josiah Wallace can fill it up from deep, and junior college transfer George Dixon plays much bigger than his 6-foot-6 listed height. Dixon led EIU in rebounds a year ago and was tenacious on the offensive glass.

Where Wisconsin has the advantage is on the front line. Micah Potter and Nate Reuvers have a few inches of height each on the Panther bigs and should be able to score in the post with ease. When glancing at last year’s box score, it isn’t hard to see why this was a close game. The Badgers shot 3-18 from deep, a number that, if replicated, would have UW in trouble tomorrow. Wisconsin did win the rebounding battle by seven despite building a house out of bricks.

The Badgers were phenomenal on the defensive end against Wallace, who ended up leading the Panthers in scoring during the year. Brad Davison doing work held Wallace to just 2-12 from the field, and you can expect the senior guards to match up once again.

Although senior forward Jordan Skipper-Brown is not listed as a probable starter for EIU, he did start last year for the Panthers. If Skipper-Brown starts alongside the other expected starters, there would be two teams each starting five seniors tomorrow night, which is an almost unheard of stat in 2020-2021 college basketball. It’s Eastern Illinois’ senior leadership that should have UW on upset alert, but if the Badgers defend the way they did last season this should be another double-digit Wisconsin win.
