East Carolina Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Pirates miss from the American Athletic Conference slate?

The Pirates might have to play all of the likely big boys – as in, it has to play the Big 12 defectors Cincinnati, Houston, and UCF – but not having to play SMU isn’t a bad deal and missing Tulsa might be a plus.

Again, though, that means East Carolina has to deal with the big guys, and that includes having to go on the road to face Cincinnati. On the plus side, Houston and UCF have to come to Dowdy-Ficklen.

East Carolina Football Schedule What To Know: That’s one nice start, but …

That’s one bear of a finish.

East Carolina gets four straight home games to start the season, and it’s followed up by road games against USF and Tulane teams that didn’t go bowling last season.

Granted, NC State isn’t a layup, but this program has been able to come up with fun upsets from time to time at home.

If this is going to be any sort of a big year, the win total damage has to be before October 15th because …

East Carolina Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

Yeah, Memphis and UCF have to come to Greenville, but neither of those games will be a given. Combine that with the brutal run of at BYU, at Cincinnati, and Houston before closing out at Temple, and three of the final our games are on the road.

That five game stretch before getting the Owls is a problem. However, it’s a manageable enough overall schedule to get to at least six wins.

East Carolina Pirates College Football Preview 2021: Offense

The offense wasn’t the problem. There weren’t enough third down conversions, and the consistency wasn’t there, but the defense was the real issue. The O averaged over 400 yards and 30 points per game, and there’s enough talent back to expect even more in Year Three under Mike Houston.

It only seems like Holton Ahlers has been around for 19 years. The veteran Pirate quarterback is in his fourth year and he keeps on improving as a passer – he threw 51 touchdown passes in three years – and can run, too.

Leading yardage receiver Blake Proehl left early for the NFL, but everyone else is back. Tyler Snead led the team with 53 catches as a midrange target, and CJ Johnson is the home run hitter averaging over 21 yards per catch with a team-high six scores. A slew of transfers are coming in to help the cause.

The offensive line isn’t all that huge, but it was okay for the running game. Now it has to do a better job of keeping defenses out of the backfield. All five starters are expected to be back up front to pave the way for leading running back Rahjai Harris along with Keaton Mitchell. The duo should combine to average over five yards per carry, but the backfield lost Darius Pinnix to the transfer portal.

5. College Football News Preview 2020: East Carolina Pirates Offense 3 Things To Know

It all started to kick in. The East Carolina offense finished the season 46th in the nation in yards and 78th in scoring, but in Year One of the Mike Houston era, the O took things to a whole other level right after Halloween with the passing game explosion and the points coming in bunches. Now it’s time to do it on a regular basis.

The Pirate attack all starts with the QB Holton Ahlers and the passing game that has the potential to rip apart anyone on the schedule if it’s all clicking. Ahlers was hardly perfect, but he’s a big bomber who’ll scare defenses deep, and he can run, too. With Reid Herring transferring, though, the hope is for redshirt freshman Bryan Gagg or star recruit Mason Garcia to be ready right away.

The receiving corps was young and needed the work, and now five of the top six pass catchers are back, starting with the trio of sophomores CJ Johnson and Tyler Snead, and junior Blake Proehl. These three combined for 174 catches and 13 touchdowns, and now … watch out. They should be ready to blow up.

But …

The offensive line has to do a little something for the running game. The pass protection was terrific, but the line allowed too many plays behind the line and didn’t do enough for a ground attack that averages 141 yards per game. Three starters are back around all-star left tackle D’Ante Smith, and North Carolina transfer Avery Jones and NC State transfer Justin Chase are coming in to add more talent.

And now they all have to pave the way for the deep back field.

Ahlers will run, but he shouldn’t be the team’s second-best rushing option. Speedy sophomore Demetrius Mauney – who led the team with 446 yards and a score – joins 234-pounder Darius Pinnix and Arkansas transfer Chase Hayden to give the Pirates a dangerous group to take the heat off the passing game.
