East Carolina at BYU picks and predictions

Prediction

East Carolina 34, BYU 30

Moneyline

BYU was held to only 14 points last week but has averaged 30.1 points per game all season. The problem has not been scoring points, but rather the defensive side of the ball. The Cougars have allowed 40.5 points per game in their 4 losses.

East Carolina averages 33.3 points per game. They have averaged 43.4 points per game in their 5 wins.

Unless BYU’s defense gets better in a hurry or can create some takeaways, expect the Pirates to leave Utah with a win.

Take EAST CAROLINA (+140).

Against the spread

BYU has not covered the spread since their second game of the season, a 26-20 win over Baylor as a 3.5-point underdog. The Cougars are 2-4 ATS when favored and 1-3 ATS at home.

East Carolina is 5-3 ATS on the season overall and 2-1 ATS as an underdog.

If you like the Pirates to win the game outright, then your better play is to PASS on the spread and stick with the moneyline because you get a much better payout.

Over/Under

Five of BYU’s 8 games have hit the Over this season while 4 of East Carolina’s have.

The two teams’ season average for scoring combines to be 63.3 points per game.

Only 1 of BYU’s losses has had more than 63 points. Two of East Carolina’s wins have had more than 63.

However, BYU’s opponents have scored 28 or more in 3 straight games.

It will be close but I LEAN OVER 63.5 (-112).

AAC Tournament: East Carolina vs. Cincinnati odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s East Carolina vs. Cincinnati odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The No. 9 seed East Carolina Pirates (15-14) will face the eighth-seeded Cincinnati Bearcats (17-14) in the American Athletic Conference first round at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth. Tip is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the East Carolina vs. Cincinnati odds and lines, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

The Bearcats have several bad conference losses this season. They lost to Tulsa and South Florida, the bottom two teams in the AAC. However, they oddly also have wins that showcase their upset potential. They beat then-No. 15 Illinois in November and routed AAC regular-season runner-up SMU by 17 in early January.

Cincinnati beat ECU by 8 at home and by 1 on the road this season but was 0-2 against the spread (ATS) in those games.

East Carolina finished 6-11 in conference play, just behind Cincinnati (7-11). The Pirates are 16-13 ATS but just 2-7 straight up (SU) on the road and 1-3 (SU) in neutral settings.

ECU lost to Davidson and Oklahoma earlier in the season and was destroyed by Houston 79-36. ECU is led by 6-foot-5 G Tristen Newton, who is averaging 17.4 points and 5.0 assists per game.

East Carolina vs. Cincinnati odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Cincinnati 68, East Carolina 65

Money line

PASS.

I like Cincinnati to win, having taken down ECU in both regular-season matchups, but at -230, I’d rather look to the points for value in this AAC battle.

Against the spread

LEAN to EAST CAROLINA +4.5 (-102).

Cincinnati was a conference-worst 6-11-1 ATS in AAC games. On the season, it was just 10-17-3 ATS.

Both times against East Carolina, Cincinnati failed to cover. The Pirates are also coming in with more confidence, having covered 4 of their last 5 outings overall. Cincinnati is just 1-4 ATS entering this matchup.

Six-foot-9 F Vance Jackson, an Arkansas transfer for ECU, averaged 30.0 points and 9.5 rebounds in the two games against UC. Jackson and Newton seem to have the greater offensive upside.

I’d prefer to side with the team with more scoring options as Cincinnati’s team strengths are in its defense and depth. Having the more talented scorers should help ECU keep it close and cover yet again.

Over/Under

LEAN to the UNDER 136.5 (-112).

Both teams are strong defensively. Cincinnati ranks 25th in opponents’ field-goal percentage. ECU has held its opponents to 43.3% from the field this season as well.

In the season matchups, the Bearcats won 79-71 and 60-59. In the first matchup, Cincinnati shot 47% from the field and ECU shot 45% from deep.

Assuming there could be some nervous jitters as well, I’d expect this matchup to be more similar to the second meeting given both teams’ defensive strength.

Cincinnati was 14-16 O/U this season. ECU was 15-14 O/U.

Cincinnati at East Carolina odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Friday’s Cincinnati Bearcats at East Carolina Pirates odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The No. 4 Cincinnati Bearcats (11-0, 7-0 AAC) and East Carolina Pirates (7-4, 5-2) tussle in a Friday contest in Greenville, N.C. The regular-season finale at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. ET kickoff. Below, we look at the Cincinnati vs. East Carolina odds and lines, and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

Cincinnati sports a top-10 defense in terms of yards (305.2 per game) and points allowed (16.0). UC has allowed more than 21 points just once in its last eight games. That Bearcats defense figures to be tested by the Pirates offense, which ranks 26th in total yards (446.9 per game) and 22nd in passing yards (274.6 per game).

The Pirates cranked out 405 passing yards in last Saturday’s 38-35 win over Navy. It was East Carolina’s second straight game by a slim margin – it won at Memphis 30-29 in overtime Nov. 13. ECU has had its share of close shaves this season with seven games decided by one score, going 4-3 in those contests.

Cincinnati at East odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Cincinnati 34, East Carolina 20

Money line

The Bearcats took last year’s game 55-17 and have won three straight against the Pirates. But ECU has played well of late, and three of the Pirates’ four losses have been by one score. By a razor-thin margin, East Carolina is a lukewarm value against the spread. Avoid the extra juice and PASS on the money line.

Against the spread

The Bearcats are 1-6 ATS in their last seven games on grass. The Pirates are 5-0-1 ATS in their last six games as underdogs. The home team is 5-0 ATS in the last five games of this series. Plus, ECU is 8-1 ATS across its last nine games against winning teams.

East Carolina has a capable enough – and improving of late – offense. UC is a steady, stay-ahead-of-the-chains group on that side of the ball, while ECU relies more on big plays.

Last year’s meeting included the Pirates being a minus-3 in turnovers and the Bearcats scoring three short-field touchdowns. Look for ECU to be in a closer battle this year.

The half-point tacked onto the 14 is significant. BACK THE PIRATES +14.5 (-115).

Over/Under

The weather forecast calls for a breezy afternoon in Greenville, and as much as the Bearcats may want to style-point this game into four-score territory, the run games and ECU trying for some keep-away figure to tilt this final into the low-50s.

BACK THE UNDER 57.5 (-112).

South Florida at East Carolina odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Thursday’s South Florida Bulls at East Carolina Pirates odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The South Florida Bulls (2-5, 1-2 AAC) travel to meet the East Carolina Pirates (3-4, 1-2) Thursday at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium in Greenville, N.C. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the South Florida vs. East Carolina odds and lines, and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

The Bulls are coming off their most impressive win of the season against an FBS opponent, spanking Temple 34-14 in Tampa (as 2-point favorites) to cover in consecutive games for the first time this season. The defense also allowed a season-low in points.

The Pirates lost a 31-24 overtime heartbreaker in Houston but easily covered as 13.5-point underdogs. East Carolina has covered three straight outings, and it’s 2-1 overall and 1-1-1 against the spread at “Rowdy Dowdy” this season, going Under in two of those games.

South Florida at East Carolina odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

East Carolina 31, South Florida 26

Money line

East Carolina (-380) will cost you 3.8 times your potential return. That’s a hefty wager on a team under .500.

AVOID.

Against the spread

SOUTH FLORIDA +9.5 (-102) is the play coming off its most impressive showing of the season. The defense shut down Temple last week, allowing just 48 yards on the ground and 183 yards through the air while gashing the Owls for 421 yards on the ground. USF also had 34 first downs to just eight for the Owls.

East Carolina should be able to win the game, but traditionally, it has struggled with USF. The Bulls lead the all-time series 9-2 and have covered seven of the past nine in the series with a 4-1 ATS mark in Greenville.

Over/Under

OVER 55.5 (-110) is worth a small-unit play. The Over is 6-0-1 in the past seven for USF against teams with a losing overall record, while going 6-2-1 in the previous nine inside the AAC.

For East Carolina, most of the trends point to the Under lately, but the Over is 9-4 in the past 13 games following a straight-up loss. The Over is also 11-5 in the previous 16 against league foes.

South Carolina at East Carolina odds, expert picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s South Carolina at East Carolina odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The South Carolina Gamecocks (1-0) and East Carolina Pirates (0-1) face off Saturday at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium in Greenville, N.C., with a noon ET kickoff.  Below, we look at the South Carolina at East Carolina odds and lines, and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

Head coach Shane Beamer’s debut went swimmingly last week, as the Gamecocks routed Eastern Illinois 46-0. Sure, that was an FCS opponent, but South Carolina did what it was supposed to behind a defense that allowed just 109 total yards. Graduate assistant-turned-quarterback Zeb Noland threw 4 TD as he filled in for injured starter Luke Doty in one of the better stories from Week 1.

Things will get tougher on the road for the Gamecocks this week, although East Carolina was unimpressive in a 33-19 loss to Appalachian State last Saturday. ECU’s defense gave up nearly 500 yards and it couldn’t get the running game going with just 86 yards on 24 carries.

South Carolina at East Carolina odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

South Carolina 31, East Carolina 24

Money line

It’s a tight spread and we like South Carolina by quite a bit, so PASS on the money line and get better returns against the spread.

Against the spread

This line could fluctuate wildly depending on the health of South Carolina starting QB Luke Doty, who missed the opener but could return for this one. The tea leaves suggest he’ll be ready to go, which would only bolster South Carolina’s raw talent and depth advantage over an ECU team that’s 2-3 ATS in its last handful of games.

Bet SOUTH CAROLINA -1.5 (-112).

Stream college football games on ESPN+ by signing up here.

Over/Under

Both of these teams hit the Under in Week 1, but this line looks just about right given ECU’s struggles on defense and Doty’s potential return for South Carolina.

We’ll lean UNDER 56.5 (-112), but without as much conviction as our ATS call.

Houston at East Carolina odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Wednesday’s Houston Cougars at East Carolina Pirates odds and lines, with college basketball picks, tips and predictions.

The Houston Cougars (15-1) travel to meet the East Carolina Pirates (7-6) at Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum for a 6 p.m. ET tip Wednesday. Below, we analyze the Houston-East Carolina college basketball odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Houston at East Carolina: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 7:30 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Houston -3000 (bet $3,000 to win $100) | East Carolina +1200 (bet $100 to win $1,200)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Houston -16.5 (-110) | East Carolina +16.5 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 129.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Houston at East Carolina: Three things to know

  1. Houston is coming off a 70-48 win over SMU last time out Jan. 31, covering a 9.5-point number. They also won their previous two road games at Tulane and Temple by an average of 20.0 points per game.
  2. The Cougars have won eight consecutive games since their lone setback at Tulsa Dec. 29, 65-64. Houston also enters on a six-game cover streak.
  3. East Carolina was knocked off by Tulsa 77-68 at Minges, and they enter on a five-game losing streak. They have also failed to cover in each of those five outings, and they’re just 1-8 ATS across the past nine games overall.

Houston at East Carolina: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Houston 81, East Carolina 59

Money line (ML)

Houston (-3000) will cost you $30 for every $1 in winnings. It’s not worth the risk in the event a miracle happens. You know better. AVOID.

Against the spread (ATS)

HOUSTON -16.5 (-110) has had no problems ticking off covers as a double-digit favorite. In fact, they’re 5-0 ATS across the past five such situations. The Cougars don’t roll up a ton of points, as they’re only averaging a mediocre 74.1 PPG. But UH ranks No. 1 in the country in scoring defense, allowing just 56.0 PPG, No. 1 in defensive field-goal percentage at 36.2 and No. 2 against the 3-pointer allowing just 24.8 percent success from behind the arc. That doesn’t bode well for an East Carolina +16.5 (-110) side that struggles to score the basketball.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 129.5 (-110) might be my favorite play on the board for the entire college hoops slate Wednesday. Yes, Houston doesn’t score a lot of points, but they’re good for at least 80 in this one. Even if the Pirates score 15 below their season average of 67.8 PPG, this game cashes an Over ticket rather easily.

SMU at East Carolina odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Saturday’s SMU Mustangs at East Carolina Panthers sports betting odds and lines, with college football betting picks, tips and predictions.

The SMU Mustangs (7-2, 4-2 AAC) and East Carolina Pirates (2-6, 2-5) meet in Greenville, N.C., Saturday for a noon ET kickoff. Below, we analyze the SMU-East Carolina college football betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

SMU at East Carolina: Betting odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Thursday at 1:25 p.m. ET.

  • Money line: SMU -455 (bet $455 to win $100) | East Carolina +340 (bet $100 to win $340)
  • Against the spread/ATS: SMU -13 (-110) | East Carolina +13 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 67.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

SMU at East Carolina: Three things to know

  1. SMU is coming off a disappointing 28-24 loss at Tulsa two Saturdays ago. The Mustangs led 21-0 early in the second, and 24-7 late into the third quarter before the Golden Hurricane outscored SMU 21-0 in the final 17:51. SMU is 4-1 straight up and 2-3 ATS in five road contests this season.
  2. East Carolina picked up a 28-3 win at Temple, covering as 7-point road favorites. The good news, so far, is the Pirates do not seem to have any COVID-19 issues after playing the Owls. Temple had its game against Cincinnati called off due to contact tracing, etc.
  3. The Mustangs are just 2-7 ATS in their past nine road games and 3-7 ATS in their past 10 as road favorites. They’re also 0-5 ATS in their past five on the road against teams with a losing home mark. ECU is 3-7 ATS in its last 10 as a home underdog, and 17-37-1 ATS in its past 55 inside the AAC.

SMU at East Carolina: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

SMU 40, East Carolina 33

Money line (ML)

SMU (-455) should be able to ease past East Carolina, but the Mustangs have struggled to cover big numbers on the road, and Saturday at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium will be no different. It might be closer than most anticipate, so you cannot lay four and a half times your potential return in what should be a close game. AVOID.

Against the spread (ATS)

EAST CAROLINA +13 (-110) is 2-1 ATS in three games as a double-digit underdog this season, The Panthers have struggled defensively, but they have proven recently they have enough offense to hang with the upper-division teams in the AAC.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 67.5 (-110) is the best play on the board in this AAC battle in Greenville. The Pirates are averaging 24.0 points per game in three home games while allowing 38.7 PPG. The Over has cashed in five straight meetings in this series, and the Over is a perfect 4-0 in the past four battles in Greenville, too.
