Eagles RB clash behind Miles Sanders named the position battle to watch by ESPN

As the Eagles sit less than 24 hours away from their preseason opener, several intense position battles will begin to play out, with huge ramifications for everyone involved.

ESPN recently looked at the camp battles to watch for all 32 NFL teams.

For the Eagles, the position battle to watch is the scuffle taking place behind Miles Sanders for carries and catches.

Running back

Left tackle was the competition to watch entering camp, but Jordan Mailata appears to have taken a sizable lead over Andre Dillard. The attention turns to running back, where there’s sorting out to do behind Miles Sanders. Rookie Kenneth Gainwell and Boston Scott are fighting for snaps, while Jordan Howard, Kerryon Johnson, and blazer Jason Huntley jockey for spots on the 53-man roster. Gainwell has received the most pass-catching opportunities thus far, while Boston Scott’s usage rate suggests that he’ll be here for the long haul. The battle could come down to Kerryon Johnson against Jason Huntley.

The Eagles are waiving cornerback Shakial Taylor, who was signed in the offseason after having previously played under Jonathan Gannon with the Colts.

The Eagles originally claimed Taylor off waivers from the New York Giants back in February.

Taylor entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Colts in 2019, before opting out of the 2020 season due to COVID-19.

Eagles training camp: DeVonta Smith leaves practice with a leg injury

Eagles rookie wide receiver DeVonta Smith just left the evening training camp practice with an apparent leg injury that’s not deemed serious.

Smith initially stayed on the field, before trotting off with the training staff, but he never headed to the locker room or the medical tent.

The No. 10 overall pick has had a solid first week that included growing pains with Darius Slay and some deep ball magic with Jalen Hurts.

Eagles had two players fail conditioning test at the start of training camp

Eagles had two players fail conditioning test at the start of training camp

As day two of the Philadelphia Eagles training camp took place, two notable players were in the news for issues that took place prior to camp start.

According to Jeff McLane of The Inquirer, wide receiver Jalen Reagor and tight end, Dallas Goedert both failed conditioning tests prior to day one.

Reagor entered training camp dealing with “lower body tightness”, and slowly got into the groove during Thursday’s practice.

Philadelphia’s 2020 first-round pick is also grieving the recent murder of a childhood friend and it understandably may have prevented Reagor from fully being engaged entering his second training camp.

Goedert for his part simply made a mistake during his test, causing him to fail on his initial run per McLane.

He wasn’t the only player to fail the test. Dallas Goedert didn’t pass as well, sources said. The fourth-year tight end apparently wasn’t slowed as much by his conditioning or lack thereof. He used the wrong technique in a drill, turned the wrong way, and thus finished below the required baseline, a league source said.

Reagor and Goedert both enter the 2021 season with huge expectations and the fourth-year tight end is looking to exceed expectations while also landing a huge contract extension in the coming months.

Eagles agree to deal with CB/S Obi Melifonwu

The Eagles added more depth to the secondary on Thursday, signing Obi Melinfonwu to a free-agent deal.

Melifonwu has been without a team since the 49ers cut him on April 30.

The Raiders selected Melifonwu in the second round out of Connecticut in 2017 and he made five appearances with the team his rookie season.

Melifonwu spent the 2019 season on the Patriots’ practice squad.

Howie Roseman says Eagles are over the 90% mark for players starting vaccination process

Eagles GM Howie Roseman confirms that 90% of players have started the vaccination process

After months of speculation, we can put to rest any concerns about the Eagles and how many of their players are vaccinated enter training camp 2021.

During his presser following the first practice of the season, GM Howie Roseman confirmed that 90% of the team is either fully vaccinated or heading that way.

This comes on the heels of last Thursday’s memo from the NFL to all 32 teams, outlining the fact that the league will not add a 19th week to the regular-season schedule, and if a game is canceled due to an outbreak of unvaccinated players, that team would forfeit.

Even more important, neither team would be paid that week’s salary.

With the Eagles personnel doing their part, Philadelphia should be able to avoid a catastrophic COVID-related scenario this season.

Howie Roseman on whether Zach Ertz will be on the Eagles roster for Week 1

The Eagles opened training camp on Wednesday and a blonde hair Zach Ertz arrived and appeared to buy into what Nick Sirianni is selling.

After months of speculation about his future in Philadelphia, GM Howie Roseman told the media that he fully expects Ertz to be on the roster for the season opener in September.

The Eagles are expected to play less ’12 personnel’, meaning Ertz could potentially find himself in a backup role, behind the ascending Dallas Goedert.

Eagles TE Zach Ertz reports for training camp amid uncertainty surrounding his future

Eagles TE Zach Ertz reports for training camp amid uncertainty surrounding his future in Philadelphia

As the Eagles sit just jours away from the start of their first training camp practice under new head coach Nick Sirianni, one of their most polarizing stars showed up for work.

Despite reports of unhappiness and wanting to move on, tight end Zach Ertz reported for the start of training camp on time amid uncertainty about his future with the team. It was expected that Ertz would be traded or cut this offseason, but the moves never came to fruition and the record-setting pass catcher will avoid daily fines by rejoining his team.

Ertz’s future with the team heading up to the season opener is unknown, but it appears Nick Sirianni will have a full arsenal of weapons to start out his first season working with Jalen Hurts as his quarterback.
