Eagles trade pick No. 171 to the Jets for picks No. 185 and No. 190

The NFL is likely to shatter it’s record for trades in a single weekend, and Philadelphia will play a major part in that, as Howie Roseman is approaching ten trades over the three days of selections.

The Eagles just traded pick No. 171 (Rd 5) to the Jets, for picks No. 185 (Rd 6) and No. 190 ovearll (Rd 6).

The eight trades are the most in the NFL and their most draft-day trades since 1990 and the seven that Philadelphia made last year, per ESPN stats and info.

The Eagles are a team full of trash talkers, and Howie Roseman just acquired the biggest one in the NFL after trading for Chauncey Gardner-Johnson.

Gardner-Johnson was a hold-in during Saints training camp while seeking a new contract and is set to make $2.54 million this season in the final year of his rookie deal.

A slot cornerback who’ll see time at safety, Gardner-Johnson was a fourth-round pick in 2019 and has 161 tackles, five interceptions, three sacks, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery in 43 regular season games.

He’s also started three postseason games.

In a move that should finally get Jalen Hurts over the hump, the Eagles will acquire wide receiver A.J. Brown from the Titans for the No. 18 overall pick in Thursday night’s draft and another third-round pick.

Drafted by the Titans in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft out of Ole Miss, Brown had 52 catches for 1,051 yards and 8 touchdowns as a rookie.

In 2020, Brown logged 70 catches for 1,075 yards and 11 touchdowns but saw his numbers drop in 2021, after the addition of Julio Jones.

In 2021, Brown logged 63 catches for 869-yards and 5 touchdowns in 13 games, and he’ll now team with DeVonta Smith and Quez Watkins to form a talented trio.

NFL trade rumors: Eagles not expected to upgrade WR position despite potential options

NFL trade rumors: Eagles not expected to upgrade WR position despite potential options

The Eagles have one really good wide receiver on the roster in DeVonta Smith, while team brass is expecting Jalen Reagor to break out in 2021.

Outside of those two, Philadelphia has question marks in Travis Fulgham and J.J. Arcega-Whiteside, while Quez Watkins offers glimpses of big-play potential at times. The Eagles currently have two first picks and depending on how Carson Wentz performs with the Colts, the team could have three going into the next offseason.

Despite reports of teams around the league willing to part with talented pass catchers, Mike Kaye of NJ Advanced Media is reporting that Philadelphia will stand pat.

The source — who was granted anonymity as they weren’t allowed to speak openly about the team’s front-office strategy — said a move involving 2022 assets isn’t likely, as the Eagles are taking a long-term approach to what owner Jeffrey Lurie categorized as a “transition period” in January.

While the source shrugged off the idea of a wide receiver trade involving draft picks, there does remain the possibility that the Eagles could deal a player at another position for a wideout on another team. GM Howie Roseman has made several player-for-player trades during training camp and the preseason over the years.

The better quarterback Jalen Hurts performs, the more options Philadelphia has outside of chasing an elite quarterback on the trade market in 2022. Names like Andy Isabella of the Arizona Cardinals and Keelan Cole of the Jets were mentioned, but Philadelphia could potentially wait until the trade deadline or next spring to pounce on a big-named pass catcher.

Michael Thomas has been mentioned in regards to the Eagles, while players like Robby Anderson, Allen Robinson, Chris Godwin, Davanta Adams, and Mike Williams (Chargers) are set to be free agents in 2022.

Eagles traded down with the idea that Ja’Marr Chase would fall to Bengals at No. 5 overall

Albert Breer is reporting that Howie Roseman traded down in the draft because he believes Ja’Marr Chase will be off the board.

The Philadelphia Eagles took part in a blockbuster trade on Friday, sending the No. 6 overall pick to Miami for the No. 12 overall pick and a first-round pick in 2022 among the compensation.

Many pundits and analysts have questioned why Howie Roseman would pass on the chance to grab a generational talent at No. 6, with Ja’Marr Chase and Kyle Pitts both expected to be on the board.

Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated’s ‘MMQB’, broke down how the trades came about and how Roseman believed Chase would be drafted a pick earlier.

The Eagles worked exclusively with the Dolphins, and Roseman had to keep the trade under wraps in the two-plus weeks in between to allow for the bang-bang nature of how it eventually would go down. And with the Eagles believing there is a pretty good chance the Bengals will take LSU’s Ja’Marr Chase at five (we mentioned in our mock this week that that Joe Burrow has given Cincinnati’s brass a glowing recommendation), Philly felt comfortable with the difference in talent between six and 12—and also operated with the knowledge that it’d be hard to get a future first (this being Miami’s slotted No. 1 in 2022) in exchange for moving down closer to the draft, particularly if it looked like the top four picks would be QBs.

The teams also swapped mid-round picks — Eagles’ pick 156 for No. 123.

The trade happened moments after the Dolphins traded the No. 3 overall pick to the San Francisco 49ers for the No. 12 overall pick that Miami just traded to Philadelphia.

Eagles tried to trade up to No. 3 overall in order to land BYU QB Zach Wilson

The Eagles had an interest in BYU quarterback Zach Wilson and according to Ian Rapoport, Howie Roseman tried to trade up to No. 3 overall with the Dolphins.

The Eagles sent two coaches to Provo, Utah to watch Zach Wilson’s BYU pro day and according to Ian Rapoport, Howie Roseman was more than interested.

Rapoport is reporting that before the Eagles traded down to No. 12 with the Dolphins, Roseman attempted to trade up to No. 3 with Miami, to only target Wilson.

This goes with the Rich Eisen and Peter King report, which suggested theEagles totally covet BYU quarterback Zach Wilson and the leaked vote of confidence for Jalen Hurts is simply a ploy to quietly trade up for their guy.

Some mocks have Wilson going as high as No. 2 in the draft after a season that saw him finish the season with 3,692 yards, 33 touchdowns, three interceptions, a 73.5% completion percentage, 254 rushing yards, and 10 rushing touchdowns.

Eagles preparing to make a big splash in 1st-round of the NFL Draft?

Philadelphia Eagles preparing to make a big splash in the 1st-round of the 2020 NFL Draft

The Philadelphia Eagles are in pursuit of a big named wide receiver in the NFL draft and the team could have their eyes on the biggest fish on the board.

We’ve previously discussed the Eagles likely having to trade up to secure the services of a stud and CeeDee Lamb could be that player of interest.

Joe Tordy of 97.5 The Fanatic is reporting that Eagles GM Howie Roseman covets the former Oklahoma All-American and could make a full-court press to acquire him.

Roseman usually plays it close to the vest with information, but there’s no doubt that Lamb is the “apple” of everyone’s eye.

Lamb would take the Eagles offense to another level and give Carson Wentz his most talented pass-catcher since entering the NFL in 2016.

After his dazzling pro-day performance at Oklahoma, Lamb certainly cemented his status as the player the Eagles must be aggressive in pursuing during next week’s NFL Draft.

Lamb was a first-team All-American after a season that saw him post 62 receptions for 1,327 yards and 14 touchdowns.

For the Eagles to make such a huge move, they’ll need to divvy up the proper compensation to go from No. 21 to the No. 10 pick, at the least.

Last year, the Pittsburgh Steelers traded up from pick No. 20 overall to pick No. 10 in the draft to select all-world linebacker Devin Bush.

Pittsburgh had to part with a first-round pick (No. 20), the 52nd overall pick and a 2020 third-rounder. The year before, Buffalo moved up from 22 to 16 by including a third and a fifth-round pick in the deal.

With only eight picks, Roseman would have to get creative, but crazier things have happened.
