Giants open practice window for LB Matthew Adams

The New York Giants have opened the 21-day practice window for linebacker Matthew Adams.

Two New York Giants linebackers, Matthew Adams and Dyontae Johnson, are eligible for a return designation from injured reserve (IR) now that the NFL has entered Week 5.

The team has 21 days to activate them.

On Wednesday, head coach Brian Daboll announced that Adams’ window has been activated.

Adams was placed on IR by the Giants on August 28 with a quad issue.

Johnson suffered an ankle injury during the Giants’ first preseason game against the Detroit Lions and was placed on IR on August 29.

The Giants currently have depth at inside linebacker in Ty Summers and rookie Darius Muasau behind starters Bobby Okereke and Micah McFadden, so they may wait a bit to bring one — or both — of these players back.

Giants place Dyontae Johnson on IR, sign Curtis Bolton

The New York Giants placed inside linebacker Dyontae Johnson (ankle) on IR with a designation to return and signed linebacker Curtis Bolton.

On Wednesday, the New York Giants placed backup inside linebacker Dyontae Johnson on injured reserve (IR) with a designation to return.

Johnson suffered an ankle sprain in the Giants’ preseason opener against the Detroit Lions and since he was on the 53-man roster as of 4:00 p.m. EDT Tuesday afternoon, will be eligible to return when ready.

In a corresponding roster move, the Giants also signed linebacker Curtis Bolton.

For Bolton, the Giants will be his eighth stop in his short NFL career, which began as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Oklahoma with Green Bay in 2019.

The 28-year-old Bolton has appeared in 28 NFL games — 23 for Las Vegas and five for Detroit. He was mainly been used on special teams.

In 28 career games, Bolton has recorded 16 tackles (11 solo), and returned one punt for 17 yards.

Giants’ Dyontae Johnson week-to-week with ankle injury

New York Giants LB Dyontae Johnson is “week-to-week” with an ankle injury after a strong showing in the team’s first preseason game.

New York Giants backup linebacker Dyontae Johnson, who left Thursday’s 14-3 preseason win over the Detroit Lions with an ankle injury, is now being considered week-to-week.

ESPN’s Jordan Raanan was the first to report the news.

“He was going to come back,” head coach Brian Daboll said after the game. “He was talking about it. I think he had an ankle. Injury-wise, I don’t have any update. I haven’t met with Ronnie (Barnes) or anything like that.”

On Friday, Daboll still did not have an official update on Johnson.

Johnson is in his second season with the Giants after spending 2023 on the team’s practice squad. He has a legitimate chance to make the roster (if healthy) as the Giants’ primary backup to inside linebackers Bobby Okereke and Micah McFadden.

“I’ve been very pleased with him up to this point. He’s doing a really good job,” defensive coordinator Shane Bowen said about Johnson last week.

“I think he’s, again, fighting for a role. You know, fighting for a role. And like I tell those guys, those backup positions, special teams are going to be a vital part of that. But defensively for us, he’s done a really good job for us stepping in there, and he’s been productive.”

The injury could impact Johnson’s chances to be on that final 53-man roster in three weeks. He is being challenged by rookie Darius Muasau, who also had a strong showing on Thursday night.

Daboll: Giants’ Drew Lock not expected to miss significant time with hip injury

The New York Giants do not expect QB Drew Lock to miss significant time after suffering a hip injury against the Lions on Thursday night.

Editor’s note: Drew Lock will not require surgery but is expected to miss time with a bone contusion.

The New York Giants debut of quarterback Drew Lock came to a swift end on Thursday night after suffering an injury in the second quarter of a 14-3 victory over the Detroit Lions.

Lock, who had completed just four of his 10 pass attempts for 17 yards and an interception, was forced to exit the game after taking a shot from Lions defensive lineman Nate Lynn with just over 2:00 remaining in the first quarter.

The Giants initially listed Lock as questionable to return with a hip injury, but he never reentered the game after giving way to Tommy DeVito.

General manager Joe Schoen later joined the local FOX booth and revealed that Lock was “fine” and could have returned to the field if the Giants needed.

Those sentiments were shared by head coach Brian Daboll after the victory.

“He’s sore,” Daboll told reporters. “We’ll find out tomorrow but I don’t foresee it being a long time.”

Daboll also offered an update on linebacker Dyontae Johnson, revealing that his injury was also minor and that he, too, could have returned to the field.

“He was going to come back. He was talking about it. I think he had an ankle,” he said.

Overall, it appears the Giants avoided any significant injuries on Thursday night but it remains to be seen if Lock or Johnson participate when the Giants return to the practice field on Sunday morning.

Note: Cornerback Cor’Dale Flott missed the game due to a quad injury.

2023 NFL draft: Giants undrafted rookie free agent tracker

The rush to sign undrafted rookie free agents is underway! Here’s a live 2023 tracker for the New York Giants.

The 2023 NFL draft has officially come to a close and the frenzy to sign undrafted rookie free agents (UDFA) is underway.
