After being off for three days, the LSU baseball team returned to action at Alex Box Stadium on Wednesday with a doubleheader against Nicholls and Southern.

The Tigers defeated Nicholls in the first game, 5-4, in an exciting fashion when freshman first baseman Tre Morgan hit a sacrifice play to drive in sophomore Zach Arnold in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Dylan Crews and Brody Drost each had two hits for the Tigers, with Drost driving in two runs.

Starting pitcher, Javen Coleman, had a rough outing and was replaced after just 1.2 innings. Coleman allowed three walks as he faced eight batters.

Freshman right-hander Blake Money was terrific in relief, pitching 4.1 innings, allowing just two hits, and striking out four hitters.

Senior Devin Fontenot got the win after allowing one run in one inning.

In the second game, LSU cruised to an easy 16-1 win over Southern to improve to 8-1 on the season.

Crews and Arnold had two more hits each in the second game. Crews hit his fifth home run of the season, while Arnold hit his third roundtripper.

Third baseman Jordan Thompson connected on a three-run home run, his third of the season.

Freshman right-hander Will Hellmers was outstanding in the win, pitching five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits, and striking out six.

LSU is back on the diamond Friday as it hosts Oral Roberts for a three-game series.
